Character Decision Logic
Use this skill when a scene requires a character to choose under pressure.
A believable decision has three layers:
- Conscious layer: the reason the character would give.
- Emotional layer: the feeling that narrows or distorts judgment.
- Psychological layer: the core desire or fear that supplies the deeper force.
Decision Test
Before accepting a decision, answer:
- What does the character think they are doing?
- What feeling is making that interpretation feel urgent?
- Which desire or fear is actually being protected?
- What information does the character lack?
- What simpler, messier, or more defensive choice would stress push them toward?
Anti-patterns
- A panicked character performs clean strategic reasoning without pause or support.
- A character articulates and defeats their deepest false belief too easily.
- A decision is optimal for the plot but not plausible for the character's information, status, and emotional state.
