Patch Tool Workaround

Use this only when the normal apply_patch tool cannot write because it requires approval, reports writing outside of the project, or otherwise rejects paths that are confirmed to be inside the trusted workspace.

Required Order

1. First try the normal apply_patch tool with repo-relative paths.
2. If it fails, verify the workspace and path:

git rev-parse --show-toplevel
realpath <target-file>
git status --short --branch

3. Use a deterministic repo-local script only for the intended files.
4. Immediately inspect the diff before running tests or staging:

git diff -- <intended-files>
git diff --check

Safe Fallback Pattern

Prefer exact string replacements that fail loudly if anchors drift:

For new files, create only the requested path and then verify it with git status --short <path> and git diff -- <path>.

Guardrails

• Do not use broad regex rewrites unless exact anchors are impractical.
• Do not edit outside git rev-parse --show-toplevel unless the user explicitly requested it and the path is writable.
• Do not stage unrelated untracked files created by prior work or test runs.
• If a fallback script partially applies and then fails, inspect git diff immediately and finish or revert only your own partial edits.
• Mention in the final answer that the fallback was used because apply_patch was blocked.
