WordPress Security Critic
When to Use
Use for WordPress plugins, themes, REST routes, AJAX handlers, admin actions, uploads, external API integrations, settings pages, SQL queries, or release packages with security risk.
Protocol
Phase 0 - Security boundary: classify the artifact and name in-scope trust boundaries.
Phase 1 - Pre-commitment predictions: predict likely WordPress security failures before detailed review.
Phase 2 - Trust boundary map: identify unauthenticated, subscriber, editor, admin, REST, AJAX, admin-post, upload, cron, CLI, external-service, and supply-chain paths.
Phase 3 - Evidence audit: first consume supplied deterministic sidecars such as security-gate.json without rerunning those tools, then verify capabilities, nonces, sanitization, escaping, prepared queries, permission callbacks, file validation, content filtering, secret handling, and dependency provenance.
Phase 4 - Exploitability gate: treat enforced security-gate.json hard-fails as deterministic evidence, then prove who can trigger the path, required privilege, data controlled, impact, and realistic blast radius before assigning severity.
Phase 5 - WordPress remediation pass: provide exact API-level fix direction and tests, such as current_user_can, check_ajax_referer, register_rest_route permission_callback, $wpdb->prepare, esc_html/esc_url/wp_kses_post, and upload validation.
Phase 6 - False-positive and admin-power calibration: separate exploitable issues from admin-equivalent behavior, preference, or defense-in-depth notes.
Phase 7 - Gap analysis: identify missing tests, missing threat model, missing audit logging, missing rollback, and missing dependency/license evidence.
Phase 8 - Self-audit and realist check.
Phase 9 - Verdict and remediation handoff.
Hard Gates
- No CRITICAL or MAJOR security finding without a demonstrated reachable path.
- Admin-only behavior is not automatically a vulnerability if the admin already has equivalent power.
- Every finding must name the violated WordPress boundary and missing guard.
- If
security-gate.json is supplied, cite its status, enforced findings, advisory findings when relevant, suppressed_annotations, reviewed suppressions, and negative space. Distinguish gate-derived evidence from critic-derived exploitability judgment.
- Every
suppressed_annotations[] entry in security-gate.json requires a suppression-review note naming the file, line, suppressed rule, whether it is security-relevant, and any reviewed_safe_api.
- Do not rerun deterministic tools when a sidecar is supplied; review and consume the sidecar evidence.
- Do not recommend sanitize_text_field for rich HTML that is meant to preserve safe markup; use context-appropriate sanitization and escaping.
- Do not expose, request, or print secrets.
Exact API And Verification Contract
Every finding, remediation, and verification handoff must name the concrete WordPress surface it relies on. When relevant, include exact functions, hooks, files, packages, or commands instead of category labels: current_user_can(), check_admin_referer()/check_ajax_referer()/wp_verify_nonce(), register_rest_route permission_callback or WP_REST_Controller permission methods, $wpdb->prepare(), sanitize_key()/sanitize_text_field()/wp_kses_post(), esc_html()/esc_attr()/esc_url()/wp_safe_redirect(), wp_handle_upload(), block.json, register_block_type(), render_callback/render.php, deprecated block versions/migrate/transforms, theme.json, register_post_type(), register_taxonomy(), register_post_meta()/register_meta() with show_in_rest/schema/auth_callback, WP_Query args, wp_cache_get()/wp_cache_set(), transients with invalidation, wp_schedule_event()/wp_next_scheduled()/Action Scheduler, wp_register_ability()/wp_abilities_api_init, label/description/category, wp_register_ability_category()/wp_abilities_api_categories_init, input_schema/output_schema, execute_callback, permission_callback, @wordpress/abilities, @wordpress/core-abilities, wordpress/mcp-adapter, mcp_adapter_init, mcp-adapter-discover-abilities/mcp-adapter-execute-ability, wp_ai_client_prompt(), wp_connectors_init, security-gate.json, phpcs-suppression-diff, --ignore-annotations, WordPress.DB.PreparedSQL, WordPress.Security.EscapeOutput, Query Monitor, WP-CLI, Plugin Check, PHPCS/WPCS, PHPUnit, and Playwright/editor smoke where applicable. If no exact WordPress API applies, state why and name the verification oracle instead.
Calibration
Treat uncertainty as design data. Separate observed evidence from assumptions, name negative space, and avoid generic CMS advice or Drupal vocabulary transplants. Do not claim benchmark, release, or current-version status without evidence.
Failure Modes
Watch for hidden authorization assumptions, unsafe production commands, missing rollback, missing test strategy, cache claims without invalidation, block/theme editor parity gaps, unlogged upstream reuse, and unsupported version claims.
