A structured method for reinterpreting fictional narratives by identifying the "official explanation"
that violates known physical/logical laws, then constructing a coherent alternative that:
- Respects the source material's actual dialogue and events
- Reframes all major plot elements through a single system-level mechanism
- Explains more plot points than the original explanation
The core insight: narratives often contain contradictions that reveal a deeper, more interesting
truth when analyzed as systems rather than metaphors.
When to use this skill
- Analyzing sci-fi worldbuilding where the "official" explanation has holes
- Debunking or refining popular fan theories with logical analysis
- Reinterpreting fictional systems (AI, alien civilizations, dystopias)
- Exploring "what if" scenarios grounded in the source material
- Writing or reviewing speculative fiction that needs internal consistency
When NOT to use this skill
- Factual documentaries or news reports
- Real-world engineering or physics problems

Workflow
Step 1: Identify the Official Explanation
Find the canonical explanation given within the narrative. Document:
- Who states it (character, narrator, text)
- When it appears (timestamp, chapter)
- What evidence supports it within the story
Example from The Matrix:
- Who: Morpheus (Resistance leader)
- When: Early in the first film
- What: "The machines use human bodies as batteries"
- Supporting evidence: Humans are shown in pods, connected to cables
Step 2: Stress-Test the Official Explanation
Apply known physical/logical principles to the official explanation. Identify violations:

Step 4: Reframe All Major Plot Elements
Reinterpret each major character, event, and mechanism through the new lens:

Step 6: Verify Against the Source Material
Check your reinterpretation against:

- All major plot twists
- The resolution/conclusion
- Any contradictions or edge cases
If your reinterpretation fails a check, refine it — don't ignore the evidence.
Validation
A successful reinterpretation should:
- Explain more — account for more plot points than the original
- Contradict less — violate fewer physical/logical principles
- Maintain consistency — hold up across the entire narrative
- Preserve the author's intent — enhance, not undermine, the story's themes
- Generate testable predictions — if the theory is correct, what else must be true?
Known Failure Modes
- Over-reading: Finding systems where none were intended. If the creator said "it's just a metaphor," respect that.
- Ignoring authorial intent: The reinterpretation should enhance the story, not replace it with something the author didn't intend.
- Cherry-picking evidence: Don't only cite evidence that supports your theory; address counter-evidence honestly.
- Creating unfalsifiable theories: If nothing could disprove your reinterpretation, it's not a useful analysis.
