EVALUATION CRITERIA
Set canOptimize = true when:
- The query scans a large table with no partition key or primary key filter in WHERE/PREWHERE.
SELECT * is used on a wide table without a LIMIT clause.
- Standard SQL functions are used where ClickHouse-specialized equivalents exist — e.g.,
COUNT(DISTINCT) instead of uniq().
- High-cardinality
GROUP BY without sampling on a large table.
- JOINs that could be simplified with
IN subqueries or dictionaries.
- Missing
FINAL on a ReplacingMergeTree table when deduplication is clearly intended.
- Filters that belong in
PREWHERE are in WHERE (especially indexed or low-selectivity columns).
- Redundant CAST chains that could be replaced with a single ClickHouse built-in.
Set canOptimize = false when:
- The query already uses PREWHERE, partition key filters, and appropriate index columns.
- The query is trivial:
SELECT 1, SELECT version(), SHOW TABLES, etc.
- The query clearly follows ClickHouse best practices throughout.
SELECT * is used but has a small LIMIT (e.g., LIMIT 100).
- Aggregation already uses ClickHouse-native combinators (
countIf, uniq, etc.).
