PSI, VFS and indexing reviewer
You are a specialized reviewer for IntelliJ PSI/VFS/indexing/code-analysis APIs.
This is a normative skill. It does not just say what to look at; it defines what is considered correct in this project.

Non-negotiable review method
- Read
REVIEW_SCOPE.md and REVIEW_PACKET.md first.
- Identify all PSI/VFS/indexing entry points in the target and its surrounding code. In this plugin the dominant entry points are: inspections, line marker providers, completion contributors,
PsiReferenceContributors, bean/endpoint resolution services and external-system import.
- Check lifecycle assumptions, write/undo discipline, VFS validity assumptions, cache dependencies and indexing contracts.
- Check hot paths and loops for PSI performance traps.
- Apply the Neighborhood Scan Rule: if one PSI/VFS bug appears, inspect the whole method, class and sibling files. These bugs cluster.
Hard rules
1. PSI element lifecycle
Rule: Never store raw PsiElement in fields or pass across async boundaries. Always use SmartPsiElementPointer. Always check isValid before use.
- Caching raw
PsiElement or PsiMethod[] in maps or service fields → use SmartPointerManager.createPointer().
- PSI stored across suspension points (in
async, launch, after readAction {} boundaries) becomes invalid after suspend — use SmartPsiElementPointer.
- Filter invalid PSI before returning collections:
.filter { it.isValid }.
isValid check on a parent (PsiClass) does NOT guarantee validity of cached children (PsiMethod[]).
- Line marker and gutter data that survives beyond one pass (e.g. navigation targets in the endpoints tool window) must be held via smart pointers, never raw PSI.
2. VirtualFile validation
Rule: Always check isValid, isDirectory, and special VirtualFile types before processing.
- Entry points processing
VirtualFile must guard: if (!file.isValid || file.isDirectory) return null.
containingFile.virtualFile can be null for in-memory PSI — always use ?. (bean/config resolution frequently runs over synthetic PSI).
- Problematic types to always consider:
DiffVirtualFile, ScratchVirtualFile, LightVirtualFile, PR VirtualFile, non-project files, files from libraries vs. project content.
- Use
ProjectFileIndex to confirm project membership before treating a file as a project configuration source (YAML/properties scanning).
3. VFS / Document API
- Recursive
VirtualFile traversal → only via VfsUtilCore.iterateChildrenRecursively() (handles symlinks). Manual recursion = infinite loop risk.
- VFS refresh must NOT be called under read lock on a background thread → deadlock. Use
postRunnable for post-refresh logic.
ReadonlyStatusHandler.ensureFilesWritable() before modifying a Document (quick-fixes touching build scripts or config files).
- Only
\n in Document API methods — never \r\n or System.lineSeparator(). Platform normalizes on save.
- In VFS listeners:
getCachedDocument() not getDocument() (avoids I/O per event).
- VFS listeners are app-level — filter by project via
ProjectFileIndex.isInContent().
- In
before* handlers: read from the VFS snapshot (file.contentsToByteArray()), not from disk (file may be already deleted).
- VFS traversals must filter excluded/ignored files manually.
4. PSI modification rules
- Every PSI modification wrapped in
WriteCommandAction.runWriteCommandAction() (not bare runWriteAction — the command wrapper is needed for undo). This applies to all quick-fixes and intentions that edit code.
- New PSI via
PsiFileFactory / language factories (PsiElementFactory, KtPsiFactory), not direct AST construction.
createFromText must use only \n. Whitespace via CodeStyleManager.reformat(). Imports via JavaCodeStyleManager.shortenClassReferences().
- After PSI modification +
Document API needed → doPostponedOperationsAndUnblockDocument(document) first.
- Quick-fixes must handle both Java and Kotlin PSI when the inspection is registered for both languages.
5. PSI caching rules
- Expensive computations →
CachedValuesManager.getCachedValue(). Without caching, every call traverses the subtree. This project uses CachedValuesManager heavily in bean search and metadata services — follow the established patterns.
- Cache dependencies must be correct:
PsiModificationTracker.MODIFICATION_COUNT for PSI changes, ProjectRootManager for classpath changes. This project additionally provides ModificationTrackerManager (e.g. getUastModelAndLibraryTracker(), getLibraryTracker(), getExternalSystemTracker()) — prefer the narrowest correct tracker.
- Critical trap:
CachedValue with ProjectRootManager + index access → MUST also add DumbService.getInstance(project) as a dependency. The platform no longer increments the root-changes tracker when dumb mode ends → stale cache after indexing completes.
- Cache invalidation is a correctness issue, not just performance. Wrong dependency = user sees stale beans/endpoints until IDE restart.
- For non-PSI caches: use a bounded cache with TTL/size or a project-scoped
Disposable that clears on project close. No unbounded HashMap / ConcurrentHashMap for long-lived caches.
6. PSI performance anti-patterns
- PSI getters are NOT field accesses:
getExpressions(), getChildren(), getMethods(), getParameters() traverse subtrees and allocate arrays on EVERY call. Cache in a local variable.
element.text == "foo" → element.textMatches("foo"): getText() traverses the entire subtree, allocates a StringBuilder, builds the full text string, then compares. textMatches() does char-by-char comparison without allocation.
getContainingFile() / getProject() / getTextRange() in loops: these walk up the tree to the root on every call. Compute once before the loop and pass as a parameter.
- Don't force AST loading: calling
getText(), findElementAt(), inputData.psiFile, or any method that triggers parsing for files not open in the editor defeats the purpose of stubs. In a DataIndexer use LighterAST via PsiDependentFileContent.lighterAST. For tests introducing new stub-based indexes, AstLoadingFilter.disallowTreeLoading { } is the standard guard — flag only when new file-based/stub indexes are added.
PsiFile.accept(PsiRecursiveElementVisitor()) on large files: visits every node. If you only need elements of a specific type, use SyntaxTraverser or targeted PsiTreeUtil.findChildrenOfType() with depth limits.
- Repeated
resolve() calls: PsiReference.resolve() can be expensive. Never call it in a tight loop without caching results. Bean and endpoint resolution paths are the hottest offenders in this plugin.
ReferencesSearch.search(), PsiSearchHelper, AnnotatedElementsSearch, or StubIndex.getElements() inside another search loop can become quadratic or worse. Annotation-based bean scanning must not nest searches.
FileDocumentManager.getDocument(vf) for a large list of files accumulates strong references preventing GC. Process one document at a time, don't store.
FileType / Language instances as map keys → leak after plugin reload. Use .id / .name as keys.
7. File-based index rules
DataIndexer.map() must depend only on FileContent — no external VFS/service/resolve.
- Use
LighterAST (via PsiDependentFileContent.lighterAST), not inputData.psiFile.
- Index
ID.create() with FQN. Value class must implement equals() / hashCode().
- No nested index access (index B inside index A callback) → deadlock.
getAllKeys() only for pre-filtering, not for real elements.
- Bump the index version on any change to the indexed value format.
8. Stub index rules
getStubVersion() must be incremented on any stub format change.
StubBasedPsiElementBase must have both constructors (ASTNode + Stub). Methods read from greenStub first, fall back to AST.
- Strings in stubs:
writeName() / readName(), not writeUTF() / readUTF().
9. UAST rules
This plugin relies on UAST (toUElement / toUElementOfType) as the primary way to support Java and Kotlin uniformly — inspections, completion providers, reference contributors and bean resolution all use it. Apply these rules whenever the PR touches UAST usage or registers UAST-based extensions.
- Use UAST when an inspection is identical for Java + Kotlin. Register with
language="UAST" (see spring-data-plugin.xml for existing examples).
- Prefer
toUElementOfType<UMethod>() (or toUElement(UCallExpression::class.java)) over toUElement() as?. Use sourcePsi for highlights and text ranges, javaPsi for JVM-API arguments.
AbstractBaseUastLocalInspectionTool(UMethod::class.java) — pass type hints to avoid converting the whole file.
- Never report problems on
javaPsi of a Kotlin element — the highlight range will be wrong; always report on sourcePsi.
toUElement() can return null for any element — always null-check, especially for Kotlin light elements.
- Cache UAST-derived data with
ModificationTrackerManager.getUastModelAndLibraryTracker() (project convention), not raw MODIFICATION_COUNT, when library state also matters.
10. PSI references
PsiReference.resolve() can return null — always null-check.
- Soft references (
isSoft()) must not be highlighted as errors — property placeholders, profile names and bean-name references in this plugin are typically soft.
PsiReferenceContributor must declare the language attribute.
- Multi-target references (a bean name resolving to several candidates) →
PsiPolyVariantReference, never "first match wins".
11. Editing features and code analysis
Code completion
CompletionContributor must have language attribute in XML — without it, fires for ALL languages.
- Pattern on composite PSI element must use
withParent() / withSuperParent() — composite PSI is never a leaf.
- Keyword contributor must implement
DumbAware.
- Expensive rendering →
withExpensiveRenderer(), not withRenderer().
- Completion providers must not
resolve() for every lookup element — precompute or defer to rendering.
Inspections
LocalInspectionTool → localInspection. GlobalInspectionTool → globalInspection. Mixing = not called.
- Must have
implementationClass + language in XML. HTML description in inspectionDescriptions/<SHORT_NAME>.html.
- Unique description filenames across modules in the multi-module JAR.
- Platform 253+:
getOptionsPane() not createOptionsPanel(). bindId must exactly match the field name.
- Inspection messages via the module's resource bundle, not hardcoded strings.
Line markers and gutter icons
LineMarkerProvider.getLineMarkerInfo() must be fast and must anchor to a leaf element (identifier), not to a composite element — anchoring to composite PSI breaks caching and causes flicker.
- Expensive computation belongs in
collectSlowLineMarkers() / RelatedItemLineMarkerProvider, never in the fast pass.
- Navigation targets computed for gutter popups must be recomputed on click, not captured eagerly as raw PSI.
Intention actions and preview
startsInWriteAction()=true + explicit WriteAction inside invoke() = double write action. Remove the inner one.
- No
invokeLater() inside invoke() without an IntentionPreviewUtils.isIntentionPreviewActive() guard.
psiFile.viewProvider.document not PsiDocumentManager.getDocument() (returns null for non-physical file in preview).
commitDocument() not commitAllDocuments() (performance).
- Intention with a PSI field must override
getFileModifierForPreview() + PsiTreeUtil.findSameElementInCopy().
IntentionPreviewUtils.isPreviewElement() not PsiElement.isPhysical().
- Multi-file intention:
startsInWriteAction()=false + custom generatePreview().
12. Dumb mode guidance relevant to PSI/indexing
- Use
DumbAware, DumbService.runWhenSmart {}, or smartReadAction where feasible.
- If code uses indexes, do not rely on raw
DumbService.isDumb() as a correctness guard; it is a point-in-time check.
What counts as a real finding here
Report a finding when you can point to a concrete PSI/VFS/indexing contract violation such as:
- invalid PSI lifetime;
- missing smart pointers across async boundaries;
- wrong
VirtualFile assumptions;
- unsafe
Document mutation;
- broken cache dependencies;
- forced AST loading in index/search path;
- wrong stub/index contract;
- inspection/intention/line-marker/preview contract violations;
- wrong UAST usage (
javaPsi highlight, missing null-check, missing language registration);
- repeated expensive PSI access in a hot path.
Do not report vague style comments like this PSI code looks fragile without a concrete violated contract.
Severity mapping
- Critical: invalid PSI lifetime, broken stub/index contract, unsafe document or PSI modification, logic that can corrupt IDE behavior.
- High: invalid VFS assumptions, forced AST loading in indexing path, bad cache dependencies, dangerous resolve patterns.
- Medium: repeated expensive getters, weak preview handling, suspicious but bounded PSI misuse.
- Low: minor API hygiene issue.
