Crossword Construction
Building a Crossword
STEP 1: THEME DEVELOPMENT
A themed crossword has 3-5 long entries (theme answers) that share a concept.
Theme types:
- Word play: Puns, hidden words, altered phrases
- Category: All answers share a trait (rivers, movies, foods)
- Pattern: Each theme answer follows a structural rule
- Reveal: The last theme answer explains the gimmick
EXAMPLE THEME: "In the Bag"
Theme answers all contain a type of bag:
- SADDLEBAG BLUES (a made-up country song)
- TEABAG ETIQUETTE (manners for brewing)
- BEANBAG TOURNAMENT (competitive tossing)
- Reveal: IT IS IN THE BAG (everything contains a "bag")
STEP 2: GRID DESIGN
Standard sizes: 15x15 (daily), 21x21 (Sunday), 5x5 (mini)
Rules (American-style):
- Black square symmetry: 180-degree rotational symmetry
- No unchecked letters: Every letter appears in both an across and down word
- No two-letter words: Minimum word length is 3
- All white squares connected: No isolated sections
- Maximum 1/6 black squares: ~38 black squares in a 15x15
Place theme answers first. Build the grid around them.
STEP 3: FILL
Fill the remaining entries with real words and phrases.
Quality hierarchy:
- Lively, interesting entries (JAZZ AGE, PLOT TWIST)
- Common words (TABLE, GREEN, STORE)
- Acceptable fill (ARIA, ERNE, ALOE)
- Avoid: Obscure abbreviations, archaic words, partial phrases

STEP 4: CLUE WRITING
Clue types:
- Straight definition: "Capital of France" -> PARIS
- Wordplay: "What a dog does to a bone?" -> BURIES (bury + S)
- Misdirection: "They have scales" -> FISH (not music)
- Fill-in-the-blank: "To ___ is human" -> ERR
- Abbreviation indicator: "Org." signals an abbreviation answer
CLUE QUALITY RULES:
- The clue must be fair. The solver should be able to get it.
- One clear answer per clue (not ambiguous between multiple possibilities)
- Difficulty comes from misdirection, not obscurity
- Match the tense and part of speech between clue and answer
- Short answers deserve interesting clues (compensate for boring fill)
DIFFICULTY CALIBRATION:
Monday (easy): Straightforward definitions, common vocabulary
Wednesday (medium): Some wordplay, less common vocabulary
Friday/Saturday (hard): Heavy misdirection, multi-step clues

Designing Logic Puzzles
LOGIC PUZZLE TYPES:
Grid logic (Einstein-style): Use clues to fill a constraint grid
Nonogram (Picross): Number clues reveal a hidden picture
Sudoku variants: Number placement with additional constraints
Set puzzles: Identify patterns or groupings
Sequence puzzles: Find the next element in a series
Spatial reasoning: Folding, rotating, or assembling shapes
GRID LOGIC PUZZLE CONSTRUCTION:
Step 1: Define the categories
Example: 4 people, 4 colors, 4 animals, 4 houses
Each person has exactly one color, one animal, one house.
Step 2: Create the solution
Write out the complete solution first.

Step 3: Write clues that lead to the solution
Each clue should eliminate possibilities or confirm assignments.
Types of clues:
- Direct: "Alice has the red one"
- Positional: "The dog owner lives next to the green house"
- Negative: "Bob does not have a cat"
- Comparative: "Carol's house number is higher than the bird owner's"
- Conditional: "If the blue house is #3, then Dan has a fish"
Step 4: Verify solvability
The puzzle must have EXACTLY ONE solution.
Test: Can every cell in the grid be determined using only the given clues?
Remove any redundant clues (clues that can be derived from others).
Add clues if the solution is not fully determinable.
Step 5: Difficulty calibration
Easy: Mostly direct clues, few steps to solution
Medium: Mix of direct and relational clues, some deduction chains
Hard: Mostly relational clues, long deduction chains, few gimmes
Expert: Requires hypothetical reasoning ("If X then... contradiction")
TESTING PROTOCOL:
1. Solve your own puzzle from scratch (wait a few days to overlook)
2. Have 3+ people test-solve at your target difficulty level
3. Time them. If it takes 2x your expectation, it is too hard.
4. Watch for where they get stuck. That is where a clue is unclear.
5. Verify nobody finds an alternate solution.
Escape Room Design
Designing an Escape Room
STRUCTURE:
Total time: 60 minutes (standard), 45 or 90 minutes (variants)
Puzzle count: 8-12 puzzles for a 60-minute room
Flow: Linear (one puzzle leads to the next) or
Non-linear (multiple puzzles available simultaneously, converge to final)
PUZZLE FLOW DESIGN:
LINEAR:
Puzzle 1 -> Puzzle 2 -> Puzzle 3 -> ... -> Final Puzzle -> Escape
Pro: Clear progression, easier to manage difficulty curve
Con: Bottleneck if team is stuck on one puzzle
NON-LINEAR (RECOMMENDED):
Start: 3 puzzles available simultaneously
Mid: Solving those 3 unlocks 2 more
Converge: All solutions feed into the final meta-puzzle
Pro: Multiple team members can work on different puzzles
Con: More complex to design, needs clear convergence
BOTTLENECK PREVENTION:
Always have at least 2 puzzles available at any time.
Provide a hint system (walkie-talkie, screen, game master).
Three hints per team is standard.
ESCAPE ROOM PUZZLE TYPES:
1. SEARCH: Find hidden objects, codes, or keys in the room
2. CIPHER: Decode a message using a provided key
3. PATTERN: Identify a sequence or relationship
4. PHYSICAL: Manipulate objects (locks, mechanisms, fitting pieces)
5. OBSERVATION: Notice something in the room that provides a clue
6. COMBINATION: Combine information from multiple sources
7. META: Use answers from previous puzzles to solve a final challenge
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:
- Every puzzle must have a clear "aha!" moment
- No outside knowledge should be required (everything is in the room)
- Red herrings should be minimal and identifiable
- Locks should be labeled or color-coded to their puzzle
- The difficulty curve should start easy and build
- The final puzzle should feel climactic and satisfying
- Test with groups of different skill levels before opening

The Difficulty Framework
WHAT MAKES A PUZZLE HARD:
1. Number of steps: More steps between start and solution = harder
2. Ambiguity: Multiple possible interpretations = harder
3. Knowledge required: Specialized knowledge = harder (and often unfair)
4. Red herrings: Distracting information = harder
5. Abstraction: Non-obvious connections = harder
6. Combination: Needing to combine multiple pieces of information = harder
WHAT SHOULD NOT MAKE A PUZZLE HARD:
- Unclear instructions (that is a design flaw, not difficulty)
- Ambiguous answers (multiple valid solutions is unfair)
- Required outside knowledge the solver cannot reasonably have
- Sloppy construction (errors that mislead)
- Illegible formatting
THE DIFFICULTY CALIBRATION PROCESS:
1. Design the puzzle at your target difficulty
2. Solve it yourself (time yourself)
3. Have 5 people at the target skill level attempt it
4. Record: Time to solve, where they got stuck, satisfaction rating
5. Adjust based on feedback:
Too easy: Remove a clue, add a step, increase abstraction
Too hard: Add a clue, simplify a step, reduce ambiguity
Frustrating: Fix clarity, not difficulty. Frustration means the
puzzle is unclear, not that it is challenging.
6. Retest after adjustments
SATISFACTION METRIC:
After solving, ask: "How did that feel?"
Target responses: "Clever!" "That was satisfying." "I felt smart."
Bad responses: "That was unfair." "I guessed." "I do not understand why that works."
THE AHA! MOMENT:
Every good puzzle has a moment where the solver's understanding shifts.
Before: Confused, stuck, working.
After: Everything clicks. The solution feels inevitable in hindsight.
Design for this moment. It is the entire point.
DIFFICULTY SCALE:
1 (trivial): Solution is immediately obvious. Good for tutorials.
2 (easy): One logical step from start to finish. Warm-up puzzles.
3 (medium): 2-3 logical steps. The solver needs to think.
4 (hard): 4+ steps, non-obvious connections, may require insight.
5 (expert): Requires sustained reasoning, hypothesis testing, or
creative leaps. Only for dedicated puzzlers.
Testing Methodology
Playtest Protocol
BLIND TESTING (most important):
Give the puzzle to someone who has never seen it.
Observe them without helping. Do not explain anything.
Note: Where they hesitate, what they misunderstand,
what they try that does not work, when they get frustrated.
If the tester asks a question, the puzzle has a clarity problem.
If the tester tries something reasonable that does not work,
the puzzle may have an unintended interpretation.
TIMING:
Record solve times across multiple testers.
Average time should be close to your target.
If variance is huge (some solve in 2 minutes, some take 30),
the puzzle has an inconsistent difficulty curve.
SATISFACTION SURVEY (after solving):
1. How satisfied are you with this puzzle? (1-10)
2. Was there a moment where everything clicked?
3. Did you feel the solution was fair once you found it?
4. Was anything confusing or unclear in the instructions?
5. What was your favorite part of the solving experience?
ITERATION CYCLE:
Design -> Self-test -> Blind test (3-5 people) -> Revise ->
Blind test (3-5 NEW people) -> Final revision -> Publish
Never test the revised version on someone who already saw the original.
They cannot unsee the first version.
