Word-Level Non-Equivalence and Strategies

Purpose

This skill reviews how a translator renders a single word or short phrase that has no direct target equivalent. Its governing rule is that words and meanings do not correspond one-to-one across languages, so the reviewer's job is to check that the translator diagnosed the specific kind of non-equivalence, weighed its significance in context, and chose a grounded strategy — rather than reaching for a dictionary gloss or a fixed type-to-strategy recipe. It advises and critiques; it does not hand back the finished lexical choice as the caller's final wording.

When to use

• A word or short phrase has no direct target equivalent and the translator wants which strategy fits.
• A rendering looks like a dictionary gloss and its fit to the context is in doubt.
• A culture-specific, modern, or buzz-word item must cross into a receptor that lacks it.
• A chosen equivalent may carry the wrong expressive load or erase a culturally embedded item.

Procedure

1. Reject any assumption of one-to-one word-and-meaning correspondence between the languages; treat the target item as an approximation to be justified, not a lookup (P037).
2. Separate the item's propositional, expressive, presupposed, and evoked meaning before judging any rendering, and read its value against the items it contrasts with in its semantic field (P011, P012).
3. Diagnose the specific type of non-equivalence — culture-specific concept, unlexicalized concept, semantic complexity, a missing superordinate or hyponym, a perspective or form difference, a loan word or false friend — but do not map that type to a strategy one-to-one, since context and purpose favour some strategies and rule out others (P001, P102).
4. Assess the gap's significance in the given context and reproduce only what the context requires before deciding how to handle it (P103).
5. Choose deliberately from an open, non-exhaustive strategy set, matching the option to the gap and purpose rather than to the non-equivalence type:
   • a more general word / superordinate (P104);
   • a loan word, optionally explained once so it can then stand alone (P059);
   • paraphrase with a related or unrelated word (P060);
   • cultural substitution for a similar impact but different propositional meaning (P081);
   • illustration for a picturable physical entity under space constraints (P105);
   • a more neutral word when the equivalent's expressive load is wrong (P080);
   • omission only as a last resort, for a non-vital item (P082).
6. Do not erase a culturally embedded source item merely to sound natural; retain, describe, or annotate it when the foreignness carries meaning (P095).
7. Treat the catalogue of strategies as open rather than exhaustive and keep studying professional practice (P106).

Inputs

• The source word or phrase, its context, and the draft target rendering (if any).
• The type of non-equivalence suspected and the translation's purpose and audience.
• Any culture-specific association or expressive load the item carries.

Output

Per finding: name the kind of non-equivalence, the strategy the draft used, whether it fits the context and purpose, the grounded alternative (with the principle it rests on), and the residual loss the caller should accept or repair; in compare mode weigh two rendering strategies for one item by the text's purpose (P106). Anti-patterns to flag

• Substituting a dictionary equivalent as if word and meaning corresponded one-to-one (P037).
• Mapping a non-equivalence type to a fixed strategy regardless of context or purpose (P001, P102).
• Using omission for an item that is not in fact dispensable, or before cheaper strategies were tried (P082).
• Flattening a culturally embedded item to sound natural, losing the meaning its foreignness carried (P095, P080).

Worked example

Source: a memoir names a specific regional flatbread the target culture has no word for, and the food evokes home. Draft renders it simply "bread." Diagnosis — culture-specific concept; the flat "bread" drops the evoked home-meaning that is load-bearing here, so refuse the one-to-one gloss (P037, P001, P011). Because its foreignness carries meaning, do not flatten it to sound natural (P095): keep it as a loan word explained once so it can then stand alone, or add a brief gloss (P059); cultural substitution with a familiar local bread is available but trades the referent away (P081). Residual loss — the reader still meets an unfamiliar word; accept that for the retained sense, and hand the final wording back.
