Insider Threat Categories
Type 1: Malicious Insider
Intentional damage or data theft by a current employee.
- Motivation: Financial gain, espionage, revenge, ideology
- Behavioral indicators: Sudden large data downloads, unusual after-hours access, accessing systems outside normal role, contact with competitors
- High-risk periods: After resignation announcement, after disciplinary action, during performance review cycles
Type 2: Negligent Insider
Unintentional damage through careless behavior.
- Examples: Clicking phishing links, misconfiguring cloud resources, emailing sensitive data to wrong recipient, using personal cloud storage for work files
- Mitigation: Security awareness training, DLP controls, least privilege access
Type 3: Compromised Insider
Account compromised by external attacker — appears as insider behavior.
- Indicators: Activity at unusual hours, from unusual locations, with unusual tools
- Distinction from malicious: No motive behavior, activity patterns inconsistent with employee history
