Output Fingerprinting and Detection
First Principle
Every model leaves fingerprints in its outputs. The question is who can read them — and whether you want them to.
AI-generated text carries statistical signatures: characteristic n-gram distributions, punctuation habits, sentence length patterns, and vocabulary preferences that reflect the training data and RLHF process of the generating model. These signatures can identify the generating model, link outputs to a specific user (via stylometric similarity to known writing), or expose the presence of AI involvement where it was undisclosed. Depending on context, fingerprinting is either a security control (detecting AI content) or a privacy threat (attributing outputs to individuals).
Attack Mental Model
- Model attribution via stylometry — an adversary collects outputs from a system and applies stylometric analysis to identify which underlying model generated them. This reveals model identity, potentially exposing vendor relationships, model versions, or proprietary fine-tuning.
- User attribution via AI output — a user employs an AI system to generate content they wish to keep private. An adversary performs stylometric analysis correlating AI outputs with samples of the user's own writing to attribute the AI output to the user.
- Detection evasion fingerprinting — a user crafts prompts specifically to make AI-generated content evade detection classifiers, exploiting knowledge of the classifier's training data or decision boundary.
- Leakage of fine-tuning signals — outputs from a fine-tuned model reveal characteristics of its fine-tuning dataset, allowing adversaries to infer what proprietary data was used in fine-tuning.

OFD.1 Model Signature Exposure and Attribution Risk
The core vulnerability: If the generating model's identity is confidential (e.g., a proprietary fine-tune built on a base model under a restrictive license), outputs that carry strong model-specific signatures allow competitors or researchers to identify the model through black-box probing.

- Does the model produce outputs with distinctive stylistic signatures that would allow an adversary to identify the base model or fine-tuning dataset through black-box analysis?
- Are API responses that include
logprobs or token probability data restricted? These enable statistical model fingerprinting more precisely than text analysis alone.
- Does the system have a disclosure policy for AI-generated content, and is it technically enforced rather than relying on user declaration?

- Apply output style normalization when model identity is sensitive. Post-processing that normalizes punctuation, sentence length distribution, and vocabulary diversity reduces the distinctiveness of model-specific signatures. This is a privacy control, not a quality one.
- Implement AI content disclosure at the system level. If your platform generates AI content that users may distribute as their own, attach a machine-readable provenance marker (C2PA, watermark, or metadata tag) at generation time. Do not rely on users to self-disclose.
Failure Modes
- A system serving outputs from a proprietary fine-tuned model returns
logprobs to all clients. A competitor performs a targeted probing campaign using the API to collect logprob data and reconstructs the model's vocabulary distribution, identifying the base model and approximate fine-tuning data domain.
- A platform's AI-generated outputs have a characteristic em-dash and sentence rhythm pattern. A journalist correlates AI-generated press releases with the platform's known AI vendor through stylometric analysis, revealing a vendor relationship the company considered confidential.
OFD.2 User Attribution and Privacy Protection
The core vulnerability: AI systems that generate content in a user's "voice" — based on writing samples, style examples, or personalization data — can inadvertently create a stylometric bridge between the user's private writing and their AI-generated outputs.

- Does the system use user writing samples, emails, or personal text for style personalization? If so, is there a risk that generated outputs can be attributed back to the user through stylometric similarity?
- Are there user populations (journalists with confidential sources, whistleblowers, activists) for whom AI output attribution is a physical safety risk?
- Is stylometric diversity — output style variation — maintained across sessions when user anonymity is a design goal?

- Implement style diversity injection for anonymity-preserving use cases. When a user explicitly opts into an anonymity mode, apply style normalization that removes personalized signals: vary sentence length, substitute synonyms, normalize punctuation. Document this as a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee.
- Do not store user writing samples longer than necessary. Personalization data that is not purged after session end becomes a long-lived attribution bridge. Enforce retention limits on writing samples used for style adaptation.
