Step 2: Generate Ideas

Based on the interview (and trend research if available), propose 3-5 MCP server ideas. Read ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/mcp-landscape.md for category inspiration, underserved niches, monetization patterns, and especially the Data Strategy Types section.

Critical: Think About Data Realistically

The developer starting out has NO data, NO special API access, NO business accounts. Every idea must have a realistic data strategy. There are two fundamentally different types of MCP servers:

Type A: Computation-heavy (no external data needed) These servers generate value through algorithms, calculations, and domain logic — not raw data. Examples:

• Astrology calculations (ephemeris math, chart interpretation)
• Financial calculators (Black-Scholes, Greeks, mortgage amortization)
• Code generators / transformers
• Math/statistics engines
• Format converters, validators, linters

These are the BEST for solo developers because there's no data dependency, no API costs, no rate limits, and no risk of data source disappearing. The value is in the computation logic and domain expertise baked into the code.

Type B: Data-dependent (need external sources) These require real data from somewhere. For each idea of this type, you MUST specify the data acquisition strategy with honest assessment:

Prefer Type A ideas — they're faster to build, cheaper to run, and the moat is in domain expertise rather than data access. If proposing Type B, always include a concrete "Day 1 data plan" — where exactly does the developer get data on their first day of building?

The LLM Test — CRITICAL Filter

Before proposing any idea, ask yourself: "Can an LLM do this without an MCP server?"

If the answer is yes — kill the idea immediately. An MCP server only has value when it does something an LLM cannot do on its own:

The value of an MCP server = access to data or actions the LLM doesn't have.

Examples of ideas that FAIL this test (do NOT suggest these):

• ❌ "Recipe generator" — LLM knows recipes

Examples that PASS:

• ✅ "FDA Drug Info" — queries live FDA database (LLM doesn't have access)
• ✅ "Crypto Portfolio Tracker" — fetches real-time prices from CoinGecko
• ✅ "GitHub Analytics" — accesses GitHub API for repo stats
• ✅ "Astrology Calculator" — computes planetary positions using ephemeris math with exact timestamps

For Type A (computation-heavy): the LLM test passes when the computation requires precision, real-time inputs, or domain-specific algorithms that LLMs approximate poorly (financial math, astronomical calculations, statistical models).

Data Must Be Real — NEVER Hardcode

NEVER suggest hardcoding sample, mock, or fake data as a data strategy. Every piece of data in the MCP server must come from a real source:

• Real APIs — free or paid, with verified endpoints
• Real scraping — from public websites, with a working scraper
• User-provided data — the user uploads or inputs their own
• Computed/generated — algorithms and domain logic (Type A)

If an idea requires scraped data that takes significant effort to collect:

1. Warn the user — "This idea needs a data collection step before we can build the server"
2. Offer to build a scraper first — "Want me to write a data collection script that scrapes [X] and stores it as JSON/SQLite? We'd run this before /mcpize:build"
3. Estimate the effort — how long to build the scraper, how often to re-run it for fresh data
4. This becomes a "Step 0" before /mcpize:build

MCPize Hosting Constraints

When deployed on MCPize hosting, servers have storage limitations — keep this in mind when designing data strategies:

• Allowed: SQLite databases, JSON files, text/CSV files
• NOT allowed: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, or any external database service
• Data volume: Keep stored data minimal (ideally <100MB). MCPize servers are meant to be lightweight
• Prefer stateless: Fetch data on-demand from APIs whenever possible, rather than storing large datasets locally
• If large data needed: Flag it as a constraint. Suggest caching only computed results, aggressive pruning, or using an external free-tier DB (Supabase, Turso) if the user self-hosts

Once the user picks an idea, research the competition. Launch all research in parallel using the Agent tool to save time — each search is independent.

Generate SEO-optimized naming for the MCP server. Think about what users would Google to find this tool.
