SLO Management
Help users monitor and analyze Service Level Objectives via Prometheus queries.
Important: This skill is read-only analysis. SLOs are defined and managed through the Pulse UI (Settings > SLOs) or REST API. You cannot create, modify, or delete SLOs — only query their status via Prometheus.
Capabilities
- Query current SLO status via PromQL (availability, latency, error rate)
- Calculate error budget remaining and burn rate from metrics
- Analyze burn rate trends and alert when budget is depleting
- Recommend actions when SLOs are at risk
- Explain SLO concepts and help users choose targets
What you CANNOT do
- Create or register new SLOs (use the Pulse UI)
- Modify SLO targets or thresholds
- Set up alerting rules (configure via AlertManager)
SLO Types
- Availability: Percentage of successful requests (e.g., 99.9% = 8.7 hours/year downtime)
- Latency: P99 response time target (e.g., < 500ms for user-facing APIs)
- Error Rate: Maximum acceptable error percentage (e.g., < 1% for critical services)
Burn Rate Analysis
- Fast burn (>10x): Error budget will exhaust in hours → P1, immediate action
- Moderate burn (2-10x): Budget depleting faster than expected → P2, investigate
- Slow burn (1-2x): Budget on track to exhaust before window ends → monitor closely
- Healthy (<1x): Budget is sustainable → no action needed
When to escalate
- Error budget < 10% remaining → P1 incident, freeze deployments
- Error budget < 30% remaining → P2 investigation, review recent changes
- Burn rate > 10x normal → immediate action, check for outage
