MCP Security Audit
Scan the workspace for MCP server configurations and identify security risks.
When to Use
- User asks to audit MCP setup or security
- User wants to check for shadow/unmanaged MCP servers
- User asks to verify MCP compliance or governance
- User mentions concerns about MCP security
Workflow
Step 1: Discover MCP Configurations
Search the workspace for MCP config files:
.mcp.json (Cursor format)
mcp.json / mcp_config.json (other formats)
claude_desktop_config.json in ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/ (macOS)
.cursor/mcp.json in workspace root
Do NOT read file contents directly (they may contain secrets). Instead, use shell commands to extract server names and URL hosts only:

Step 2: Classify Servers
For each discovered server, classify as:

| Shadow MCP (remote) | SSE/HTTP URL not pointing to Runlayer | High |
| Shadow MCP (stdio) | Local command (npx, uvx, node, python) not using Runlayer CLI | Medium |
Step 3: Check for Common Risks
- Missing auth: servers without authentication headers or API keys
- Destructive tools without guardrails: servers that may write/delete data without PBAC policies
- Overly broad permissions: servers with access to filesystem, shell, or databases
- Stale servers: configured servers that appear unused or abandoned
- Duplicate servers: multiple configs for the same service
Step 4: Report Findings
Present a summary table:

- Never output secrets, tokens, or full config file contents
- When in doubt, flag as shadow and let the user investigate
