I'd been summing the diagrams one loop at a time and the cancellations weren't manifest — every term divergent, every term needing its own counterterm. The path-integral picture makes it obvious: the gauge invariance does the work, and most of what I was painstakingly computing is zero by Ward identity. I'd probably have gotten here anyway. The dose just made it harder to keep insisting on the wrong frame.
