Fetch Rules for Academic Sites
arXiv: web_extract(urls=["https://arxiv.org/abs/ID"]) works reliably. For bulk paper lookup, use the REST API (curl https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?id_list=ID1,ID2) — faster and more structured.
HN: web_extract(urls=["https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=ID"]) works reliably — plain HTML.
Search rate limit: Max 3 web_search() calls in parallel. If searches fail or return empty, wait 15s before retrying.
Quality Rules
- Date-filter strictly — sort by
submittedDate and filter out papers outside the window
- Citations aren't everything — a 2-day-old paper with 0 citations can be more significant than a 2-year-old paper with 50
- Read the limitations section — papers oversell their contributions in abstracts; the limitations section is where the real picture is
- HN comment quality over quantity — 5 deep expert comments > 50 "+1" comments
- Verify claims — if a paper claims SOTA, check what benchmark and what date. SOTA claims expire fast
