Impermanent loss (IL) is the difference in value between holding tokens in a liquidity pool vs simply holding them. Understanding IL is critical for making informed LP decisions.
What Is Impermanent Loss?
When you provide liquidity to a pool, the AMM rebalances your position as prices change. If the price ratio between your two tokens changes from when you deposited, your position is worth less than if you had just held.
Key insight: IL is only "realized" when you withdraw. If the price returns to your entry ratio, IL disappears — that's why it's called "impermanent."
