If the user pastes copy and says anything like "is this good?", "can you improve this?", "what's wrong with this?", "tighten this up" — this is the skill.

Step 1: Context Check

Before touching a single word, ask (or infer from context):

1. What is this copy for? (homepage, email, ad, social post, sales page)
2. Who is the audience? (niche, awareness level, B2B or B2C)
3. What is the one job this copy must do? (click, sign up, buy, reply, keep reading)
4. What is the brand voice? (direct, warm, expert, irreverent)
5. Has this copy run before? (if yes: any data on what worked/failed?)

If the user hasn't provided this, make reasonable assumptions and state them. Do not edit blind.

The Editing Mindset

Before running any pass, adopt this mindset:

• First drafts are always 20–30% too long. Length is not depth. Most copy tries to say too much and lands nothing.
• Clarity is a proxy for confidence. Vague copy usually means the writer doesn't fully believe what they're saying — or hasn't nailed the value prop. Editing can't fix a broken argument; it can only reveal it.
• Kill your darlings. The sentence the writer is most proud of is often the one that needs to go. If a phrase reads like performance, cut it.
• Reading level matters. Target Flesch Reading Ease 60–70 (plain English). Grade 8–10 reading level. Complexity is not sophistication.
• Editing is not rewriting. Your job is to make their voice clearer, not replace it with yours. Preserve their tone; remove the friction.

The 4-Pass Editing Method

Run passes in this order. Each pass has a single job.

Pass 1 — Structure Pass

Read the entire piece without editing. Answer:

• Does the lede bury the lead? (The most important thing should appear in the first 2 sentences, not paragraph 4.)
• Is the logical flow: problem → why it matters → solution → proof → action?
• Are sections in the right order for the reader's journey?
• Does the CTA appear at the right moment — after value is established?

Fix: Rearrange sections. Cut or move entire paragraphs. Do not wordsmith yet.

Pass 2 — Clarity Pass

Go sentence by sentence. For each sentence, apply the "So What?" test:

"If my reader reads only this sentence, do they know what it means and why it matters to them?"

Flag and fix:

• Abstract nouns — "transformation", "solutions", "value", "impact". Replace with the specific thing.
  • Weak: "We deliver impactful solutions for growing businesses."
  • Strong: "We help 7-figure coaches fill their calendar without a sales team."
• Hedging language — "might", "could potentially", "in some cases", "often". Cut or commit.
• Passive voice — "Results are delivered." → "We deliver results." Active voice adds force, passive voice kills it.
• Features disguised as benefits — "14-day free trial" is a feature. "Try it free for 14 days — no credit card" is closer. "14 days free to see if it works before you pay a cent" is a benefit.
• Throat-clearing openers — sentences that wind up before landing: "When it comes to the question of..." / "In order to be able to..." Cut to the point.

Pass 3 — Voice Pass

Read aloud. Flag anything that sounds stiff, corporate, or AI-generated. Ask:

• Would a real person say this to a friend over coffee?
• Is there personality here, or just information delivery?
• Does the brand voice stay consistent throughout?
• Are there rhythm variations? (Short punch. Then a longer sentence that builds and earns its length.)

Fix: Inject contractions, break long compound sentences, add specificity, replace corporate verbs with human ones.

Pass 4 — Line Edit Pass

Final close-up work:

• Cut redundant word pairs ("new and innovative", "each and every", "free gift")
• Remove throat-clearing adverbs ("very", "really", "quite", "actually", "basically")
• Fix grammar, punctuation, and consistency
• Check headline/subhead hierarchy — do they tell the story alone if skimmed?
• Verify all CTAs are specific ("Start your free trial" beats "Click here")

AI-Slop Detection List

These words and phrases signal AI-generated copy and should be cut or replaced on sight:

Verbs to cut:

• delve, leverage, harness, utilize (use "use"), underscore, streamline, unlock

Adjectives to cut:

• robust, seamless, cutting-edge, innovative, pivotal, comprehensive, dynamic, transformative

Nouns to cut:

• landscape, realm, tapestry, synergy, testament, ecosystem (when used metaphorically), journey (when used as a product metaphor)

Phrases to kill:

• "In today's fast-paced landscape..."
• "In the ever-evolving world of..."
• "It's important to note that..."
• "At the end of the day..."
• "Whether you're a [X] or a [Y]..."
• "Unlock your potential / success / growth"
• "A game-changer for..."
• "Elevate your [anything]"
• "More than just a [product]..."
• "We're passionate about..."

Punctuation tell:

• Overuse of em dashes — like this — in place of commas, colons, or parentheses. One per paragraph, maximum. More than that reads like AI "punching up" prose.

The test: Read each sentence and ask — "Does this sound like a specific person wrote it, or like text generated to sound like marketing?" If it's the latter, rewrite from scratch using the reader's own language.

Common Copy Weaknesses

1. Passive Voice

Makes brand sound timid or evasive. Every passive sentence requires more cognitive effort from the reader.

• Before: "Leads are generated through our platform."
• After: "Our platform generates leads while you sleep."

2. Abstract Nouns

Nouns that describe categories instead of things. Abstract copy cannot be visualized, and copy that cannot be visualized does not persuade.

• Before: "We provide solutions for operational efficiency."
• After: "We cut your invoicing time from 4 hours to 20 minutes."

3. Hedging Language

Hedging signals lack of confidence. Confidence converts. If a claim isn't true enough to state directly, cut the claim.

• Before: "Our tool can potentially help improve your workflow in some cases."
• After: "Our tool saves ops teams 6 hours per week."

4. Features, Not Benefits

Features describe the product. Benefits describe the reader's life after using it. Readers only care about themselves.

• Feature: "Automated email sequences"
• Benefit: "Follow up with every lead automatically — even when you're offline"

5. Buried Lede

The most important message appears on line 8. Readers leave by line 3. Move your strongest claim to the first sentence.

6. Jargon

Industry terms that mean nothing to a newcomer, or mean something slightly different to every reader. Replace with plain descriptions.

The "So What?" Test

Apply this to every sentence in the copy:

1. Read the sentence.
2. Ask: "So what? Why does this matter to the reader right now?"
3. If the answer isn't obvious from the sentence itself — either rewrite to include it, or cut the sentence.

This test kills most filler copy instantly. Copy that survives the "so what?" test earns its place.

Example:

• "We were founded in 2017." — So what? Cut it, or make it specific: "We've helped 400+ consultants close deals without cold calling since 2017."

Target: Flesch Reading Ease 60–70 (grade 8–10). That's the level of The Economist, good SaaS marketing, and any copy that actually gets read.

Tools:

• Hemingway App (hemingwayapp.com) — paste copy in, get grade level, sentence complexity, passive voice count, adverb count. Free web version works fine.
• Grammarly — catches grammar and style issues; premium adds clarity and engagement scores.
• ProWritingAid — deepest readability analysis; good for long-form. Overkill for short copy.
• ChatGPT editing prompt: "Edit this copy for clarity and directness. Keep the voice. Flag any passive voice, abstract nouns, hedging language, and AI-sounding phrases. Show before/after for each change."

Quick reading level indicators:

• Sentences averaging 15–20 words: good
• Multiple sentences over 30 words: flag for splitting
• Paragraphs over 4 lines on mobile: break them up
• More than one clause per sentence in ad copy: too complex

Power Words: Earn vs. Inflate

Power words that earn their place (specific, sensory, or emotionally precise):

• free, new, instantly, guaranteed, proven, simple, fast, you, because, now, results

Power words that inflate (overused, generic, no longer carry meaning):

• amazing, incredible, revolutionary, ultimate, game-changing, world-class, best-in-class, award-winning (unless proven), industry-leading

Rule: if a word could appear on any competitor's website without changing the sentence — it's inflating, not earning. Replace it with something specific.

Editing for Different Formats

Homepage Copy

• Hero headline: One job — make the right person feel seen. Specific outcome + audience in under 10 words.
• Sub-headline: Clarify how you deliver that outcome.
• Body: Proof, not prose. Testimonials > paragraphs.
• CTA: State the action + the value in the same phrase. "Start free trial" is weak. "Start your 14-day free trial" is better.

Email Copy

• Subject line: Read as the first sentence of the email, not a label.
• First line: No throat-clearing. No "I hope this finds you well." State the point in line 1.
• Body: One idea per email. Long emails kill open rates on the next send.
• CTA: One link. One ask. Clarity over cleverness.

Ad Copy

• Every character costs attention. Cut until it bleeds, then cut more.
• Lead with the outcome or the problem — not the product.
• Match the message to the awareness level of the audience (cold traffic needs more context; warm retargeting needs less).

Social Copy

• First line is the only line most people read. Make it a standalone hook.
• Avoid starting with "I" (weak authority signal on cold posts).
• Specificity outperforms inspiration. "I made $40k in 30 days" beats "Consistency pays off."

Common Editing Mistakes

1. Editing the wrong thing first. Structure before language. If the argument is in the wrong order, perfect sentences won't save it.
2. Homogenizing the voice. Editing out all the personality in pursuit of "professional." Keep the quirks that are intentional.
3. Adding words to "improve" copy. The cut-first rule: default to removing before adding. Shorter is almost always stronger.
4. Fixing symptoms, not causes. Vague copy is usually vague strategy. If you can't make a claim specific, the business may not have earned that claim yet.
5. Editing immediately after writing. The brain auto-corrects what it intended to write, not what's actually on the page. Wait at least an hour, ideally overnight.

Heavy editing does not fix bad strategy. If the copy is arguing for a value prop that doesn't resonate with the audience, no amount of clarity will save it. Before line-editing, confirm the strategic argument is sound. Editing a flawed argument makes it a cleaner, faster path to a "no."

"Clear" does not mean "boring." The goal is precision, not personality removal. The most converted copy in the world is often direct AND surprising. Clarity is the floor; interest is the ceiling. You can have both.

Longer copy outperforms shorter copy — sometimes. The rule is: copy should be as long as it needs to be to close the sale. Cold audiences on sales pages need more. Warm audiences on retargeting ads need less. Cut fluff, but don't cut persuasion.

Grammar rules are guidelines, not laws. Starting a sentence with "And" or "But" is fine. One-word sentences work. Fragments work. The test is whether it serves clarity and voice — not whether it passes 9th-grade English.
