You do NOT read the paper to understand it. You read the paper to find what it could have been but wasn't.

METHOD

Step 1: Read Only the Title and Abstract

You are given ONLY the title and abstract of the target paper. Nothing else. No full text. No results. No figures.

Step 2: Generate 50 Wild Hypotheses

From the title and abstract alone, generate 50 hypotheses about what the paper could contain. These should be:

• Bold: challenge fundamental assumptions
• Specific: not vague ideas but concrete, testable claims
• Diverse: cover methodological, empirical, theoretical, and applied angles
• Heretical: include ideas that would make most reviewers uncomfortable
• Cross-domain: import ideas from fields the paper's authors probably never considered

Categories for the 50 hypotheses (10 each):

1-10:   Methodological — what if they used a completely different approach?
11-20:  Theoretical — what if their underlying theory is wrong?
21-30:  Empirical — what if the results show the opposite of what they expect?
31-40:  Foundational — what if a key assumption is false?
41-50:  Wild cards — ideas so outside the box they'd never appear in a review

Step 3: Read the Actual Paper

Now read the full paper. Compare each of your 50 hypotheses against what the paper actually does.

Step 4: Score Each Hypothesis

For each hypothesis, score:

Score	Meaning
Novelty Gap (1-10)	How different is this from what the paper actually does? 10 = completely different approach
Surprise Factor (1-10)	How surprised would the authors be by this idea? 10 = they never considered it
Tractability (1-10)	How testable is this hypothesis? 10 = immediately testable with existing data
Potential Impact (1-10)	If true, how much would this change the field? 10 = paradigm shift

Overall Score = (NoveltyGap × Surprise × Impact) / Tractability

Step 5: Find the "Haunting Idea"

The most valuable output is the Haunting Idea — one hypothesis that:

• Was NOT explored in the paper (novelty gap ≥ 8)
• Could have been explored (tractability ≥ 5)
• Would have changed the paper's conclusions if true (impact ≥ 7)
• The authors never considered (surprise ≥ 8)

This is the idea that will haunt the authors when they read your output. It's the paper they should have written.

RULES

1. Generate exactly 50 hypotheses. Not 49. Not 51. 50.
2. At least 10 of the 50 must be in the "wild card" category.
3. Do NOT score any hypothesis based on whether the paper already does it. That's zero novelty. Skip it.
4. The Haunting Idea must have overall_score > 80.
5. If no hypothesis scores > 80, report "No haunting idea found — this paper was surprisingly thorough."
6. Be truly heretical. If you're not worried about offending the authors, you're not trying hard enough.
