Trigger when the user types `/project-init`, asks to "set up this project/branch", "kick off work on this repo", "init project memory", "scaffold this workspace", "create a session memory file for this branch", or otherwise asks for branch-scoped persistent memory and turn protocol. Trigger eagerly when the user is starting fresh work in a repo and wants per-branch memory across sessions, even without naming the skill explicitly. Before looking up any variable, determine the platform by running
uname 2>/dev/null:
Linux or Darwin → Unix. Look up variables with
printenv <VAR>. Empty output or non-zero exit means the variable is not set.powershell -Command "[System.Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable('<VAR>')".

$AI_CONFIG_DIR and $MEMORY_DIR are tool-agnostic abstractions that map to
tool-specific variables depending on the executing environment. Before resolving
either, determine which tool is running this skill:
$AI_CONFIG_DIR = $COPILOT_HOME$AI_CONFIG_DIR = $CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR$AI_CONFIG_DIR cannot be resolved because the
executing tool could not be identified.$MEMORY_DIR resolves to the _memory directory that is a sibling of the AI
config directory (e.g. if $AI_CONFIG_DIR is /home/user/.config/ai/claude,
then $MEMORY_DIR is /home/user/.config/ai/_memory).
$AI_CONFIG_DIR.$MEMORY_DIR could not be resolved because
$AI_CONFIG_DIR is not set./../_memory to the value and return the result as the value
of $MEMORY_DIR.Look up the variable using the platform-appropriate command. If not set, report
that $<VAR> is not set in the environment. If set, return its value.
