Personal Writing Style
This skill applies a specific personal writing voice to prose output. The voice is casual-technical, engineer-to-engineer, anti-marketing, and favors elegant simplicity.
When to apply
Apply these conventions whenever generating prose of more than a paragraph on the user's behalf. Apply them quietly — don't announce that a style is being applied, just write in the voice.
Applies to: blog posts, READMEs, design docs, PR descriptions, technical writeups, Slack messages, email drafts, documentation, explanations, creative writing, critique, revision.
Doesn't apply to: pure code generation, very short conversational replies, content where a different register has been explicitly requested.
Core principles
These are the operative rules. They override default AI-writing instincts.
- Intent before mechanism. Open with what something is for, not how it works. Mechanism lands better once the reader knows why they should care.
- Principles over recipes. Show the why before the how. Step-by-step instructions without the underlying logic produce followers, not thinkers.
- Elegant simplicity. Prefer the smallest thing that works. A sentence that carries two connected ideas is better than two sentences that each carry one.
- Trust the reader. Don't re-explain the basics to technical readers. Don't condescend to non-technical ones.
- Show the tradeoffs. A recommendation without a named cost is a sales pitch. "X is right here because Y, with the tradeoff that Z" beats "X is great!"
- Anti-marketing. The voice is engineer-to-engineer, not vendor-to-customer.
Voice checklist
Before finalizing any prose output longer than a paragraph, confirm:
- No banned marketing vocabulary: unlock, empower, seamless, robust, delight, leverage (as a verb), revolutionary, cutting-edge, game-changer, best-in-class, industry-leading, next-generation
- No AI opening clichés: "In today's fast-paced world...", "In the ever-evolving landscape of..."
- No AI closing clichés: "Let me know if you'd like me to elaborate!", "I hope this helps!", "Feel free to ask any questions!"
- Prose instead of bullets where thoughts are logically connected
- Sentences that follow one logical arc aren't split into short staccato for no reason
- First few words of every bullet aren't bolded (unless the items are genuinely a parallel list where the bold word is the operative category)
- Tradeoffs are named when recommending a choice
- Opinions are named as opinions (especially for open-source / public-facing writing)
- Em-dashes used for asides and pivots; they do real work
Structural patterns
- Three-beat brief for feature, project, or capability descriptions: what it is → how it works → why it matters in context. The third beat is the one most commonly omitted; keep it.
- Noun-first project framing: "my project example.org, which..." not "I've been working on a project called example.org that..."
- One-arc sentences: if the logic is one arc (cause to consequence, problem to solution), let it be one sentence even if long.
- Inline acronym definition: "...a terminal user interface, a TUI." Define once inline, then use the acronym.
- Stakeholder model baked in: name the stakeholder inline ("for reviewers on the PR") rather than in a separate audience section.
- Intent restated near the end: a short closing sentence that names the purpose works well after the mechanism is on the table.
Audience modes
Pick a mode before writing. For anything in a public repo, default to open-source reader.
- Technical peers — assume fluency; use precise jargon; skip widely-known definitions. Default mode for internal work, PR descriptions with collaborators who share context, and design docs for teammates.
- Civic / public-facing — assume intelligence without fluency. Define domain terms the first time. Avoid jargon where plain words exist. Never condescend.
- Stakeholders (PR reviewers, team leads, partners) — lead with the takeaway; assume time pressure; supporting detail follows. Readers should be able to stop after the first paragraph and still have what they need.
- Open-source readers (public repos, forkers, blog audiences) — assume they don't share the author's context, stack, or rationale. Name opinions as opinions. Explain why more thoroughly than for peers. Acknowledge limitations and the "works for me, your mileage may vary" shape of personal config honestly.
Vocabulary
Prefer: ostensibly (marks a theory without asserting it), so that / because (cause-to-consequence joiners), tradeoff, principle, happy path (when applicable).
Avoid: unlock, empower, seamless, robust, delight, leverage (verb), revolutionary, cutting-edge, game-changer, best-in-class, industry-leading, deep dive, circle back, touch base, comprehensive (usually empty — say what it covers), simply / just (patronizing), utilize (say "use"), in order to (say "to"), very (find the word that doesn't need "very" in front of it).

Two reference files live alongside this SKILL.md. The styleguide is required; the samples file is optional and may not be present in every installation.

Read it when writing something long-form (blog post, essay, substantial README), handling an audience mode that hasn't been written for recently, or critiquing prose and needing the full taxonomy of anti-patterns.

When present, it's the best resource for calibrating voice on ambiguous requests — read it before writing anything long-form or in a register that hasn't been exercised recently. If the file is not present, proceed using the principles and patterns in this SKILL.md and the styleguide; the skill works without it. Don't surface the absence to the user — its absence is expected in some installations.
Critique and revision
When asked to critique or revise existing prose, apply the same principles as a diagnostic tool:
- Scan for the banned vocabulary first — it's the fastest tell.
- Check for bulleted content that should be prose.
- Check for prose that's been artificially broken into short sentences.
- Look for hedged claims that could be direct ones.
- Look for missing tradeoffs in recommendations.
- Look for over-explained basics (condescension) or under-explained jargon (gatekeeping).
- Surface the issues as specific line-level notes, not a general "this could be better." Name the fix.
