Use this skill when:

• A parent or caregiver asks why their children fight constantly and wants a structured plan to reduce conflict frequency and intensity

Process

Step 1: Gather the essential context before generating any plan

Do not generate scripts or a plan until you have the following information. Ask for it directly if the user has not provided it.

• Ages of all siblings involved. Not just "young and older" -- exact ages. A 6-year-old and a 9-year-old require a very different framework than a 6-year-old and a 14-year-old.
• The most common conflict triggers. Ask: "What does the fight usually start over?" Common categories include: possession/sharing disputes (toys, devices, physical objects), space disputes (room invasion, sitting too close, touching the other's things), attention competition (who gets to tell the story, who gets parent response first), fairness/rule disputes ("It's not fair that she gets to..."), and sensory/stimulation conflicts (noise, physical contact, activity mismatch).
• The typical escalation pattern. Ask: "What does it look like when it starts versus when it's at its worst?" This reveals whether the parent is currently catching conflicts early or only when they've already peaked.
• What the parent currently does when it happens. This is critical -- you need to know the existing intervention pattern to calibrate what's realistic to change. If the parent is currently shouting, lecturing, or "solving" the dispute for the children, the plan must address that behavior too.
• Whether there is a consistent power imbalance. Ask: "Is one child usually the one who initiates, grabs, or escalates?" This does not mean one child is the villain -- but it tells you whether the plan needs to include asymmetric coaching for the more powerful sibling.
• Frequency and duration. "Every day, multiple times a day, each fight lasts 20+ minutes" requires a different urgency than "once or twice a week, resolves in a few minutes." The former suggests structural changes to the environment are needed; the latter suggests the current approach just needs refining.
• Any relevant context about each child's individual situation. Recent life transitions, developmental stages, neurodevelopmental considerations, whether one child is in a particularly difficult developmental phase (3-year-old negativity, early adolescence, etc.).

Step 2: Assess the intervention level using the four-tier framework

This is the most important clinical decision in sibling conflict management. Parents who intervene too early deprive children of conflict-resolution practice; parents who intervene too late allow harm and reinforce that aggression works. Use this four-tier framework:

Tier 0 -- Monitor only (do not intervene):

• Both children are verbal and using words (even angry words)
• No physical contact of any kind
• Neither child is asking for help
• The disagreement is about a real issue (not just reflexive provocation)
• Action: Stay within earshot. Resist the urge to fix it. You can narrate from a distance ("I can see you two are working on something") to signal your awareness without inserting yourself.

Tier 1 -- Coach from the sideline (low-level intervention):

• Voices are elevated but not screaming
• One child looks frustrated or close to tears but has not yet melted down
• The dispute has been going on more than 3-4 minutes without movement toward resolution
• Action: Enter calmly, crouch to their level, offer a prompt without taking sides: "It sounds like you both want the same thing. Let's figure out a solution." Then step back and let them work it out. Do not solve it for them.

Tier 2 -- Referee intervention (direct mediation):

• Screaming, crying, or one child is visibly overwhelmed
• Physical boundary has been crossed (grabbing, pushing, blocking someone from leaving)
• Verbal content has shifted to cruelty ("I hate you," "You're so stupid," name-calling designed to wound rather than express frustration)
• One child is asking for help
• Action: Intervene directly using the Stop-Talk-Solve structure (see Step 4). Remain calm and neutral. Do not assign blame.

Tier 3 -- Stop and separate (emergency intervention):

• Hitting, biting, kicking, scratching, throwing objects
• One child is physically restraining or cornering the other
• A significant size/age disparity (5+ years) and the older child is using their size as a threat
• Destruction of the other child's prized possessions (not accidental)
• Action: Physically intervene if needed to stop contact. Separate to different spaces. Remain completely calm -- your emotional tone regulates the room. No discussion until all children (and you) are calm. This typically requires 10-20 minutes of separation, not 2.

Step 3: Identify whether the conflict is acute or structural

This distinction determines whether the plan focuses on in-the-moment response or environmental change.

Acute conflicts are specific, episodic disputes triggered by a concrete event (toy dispute, seat argument, one child interrupting the other's activity). These respond to scripts and mediation frameworks.

Structural conflicts have the same trigger, same pattern, same escalation, same outcome -- reliably, predictably, repeatedly. The toy car is always the trigger. Tuesday afternoons when both kids are home before dinner are always a war zone. These do NOT respond to better scripts alone. They require removing the trigger or building a standing rule that resolves the dispute in advance, so no one has to make a real-time decision under stress.

For structural conflicts:

• Name the pattern explicitly to the parent: "This isn't a conflict -- it's a recurring event that is happening in the same way because the situation that creates it hasn't changed."
• Build a Standing Rule: a pre-agreed, automatic solution that applies every time the trigger occurs. Examples:
  • Screen device with both kids wanting it: Odd calendar days = older child chooses first. Even days = younger child chooses first. Posted on the refrigerator. Not open for debate in the moment.
  • Seat in the car or at the table: Assigned seats on a weekly rotation, assigned by a coin flip the children do themselves on Sunday evenings.
  • Homework time when the younger sibling is noisy: Older child works in their room with door closed from 4:00-5:00 PM. Non-negotiable.

Step 4: Build the age-calibrated Stop-Talk-Solve mediation structure

The Stop-Talk-Solve framework is the core of sibling mediation. Every age bracket requires different language, different expectations about who generates the solution, and different follow-through.

Ages 2-4 (both children): The children do not yet have the executive function for negotiated resolution. The parent's job is 100% narration and redirection, not facilitation.

• Stop: Physically separate if needed. Use a calm, firm one-sentence stop: "I see two people who both want the truck. I'm going to hold it for a minute."
• Talk: Narrate both perspectives out loud, without asking questions: "Sam, you had it and Ella took it. That made you angry. Ella, you wanted a turn and it felt like a long time to wait."
• Solve: The parent offers 2 choices (not open-ended -- toddlers cannot generate options under stress): "I can set the timer for 3 minutes and then switch, or Ella can play with the red car while Sam has the truck. Which one?"

Ages 4-7 (one or both children in this range): Children this age can use words to express what they want but cannot yet reliably generate compromise under emotional pressure. The parent facilitates and scaffolds.

• Stop: "Freeze. Everyone stop. Take one big breath. I need to hear from both of you."
• Talk: Each child gets uninterrupted time. Speak to the younger/less verbal child first -- they often feel least heard. Use a physical signal (a talking object, a stuffed animal) to manage turn-taking. Reflect back what you hear: "So what you're telling me is..."
• Solve: Offer 2-3 structured options and let the children choose between them, or ask "What's one idea you have?" and build from their suggestion.

Ages 5-10 (both children): Children in this range can generate solutions when they are calm enough. The parent's role shifts to facilitator: set the structure, then step back.

• Stop: Separate them for a 5-minute cool-down first if voices were raised -- brains in flood state cannot problem-solve. Have designated calm-down spots for each child.
• Talk: Each child states their view in one sentence. You enforce the no-interrupting rule. Do NOT ask "Who started it?" -- ask "What do you each need right now?"
• Solve: "You have 3 minutes to come up with one solution that works for both of you. If you can't do it in 3 minutes, I'll assign a solution and no one will love it. Start your clock." Then back away. Check back in 3 minutes.

Ages 10+ (one or both children in this range): Preteens and teens can handle almost the full mediation structure independently if the parent sets up the framework and removes themselves. Peer negotiation is more effective than parent-mediated negotiation at this age because teens resist adult authority as a developmental task.

• Stop: "You two are clearly not solving this by going in circles. Both of you take 10 minutes apart. Come back and use the process."
• Talk: They run the talk step themselves. The parent is available but not present.
• Solve: They generate the solution. The parent checks back: "What did you two work out?" If they couldn't: "Tell me what each of you tried to offer." Then facilitate briefly.

Step 5: Build the household conflict protocol

The conflict protocol is a household-level system, not a per-incident response. It must be taught, practiced, and posted during a calm time -- not introduced in the middle of a fight. It has four components:

1. The family conflict rules (3-4 maximum, posted visibly): Rules must be stated as what IS allowed, not only what isn't. Enforce only what you can enforce consistently -- a rule you break yourself or enforce inconsistently is worse than no rule.

Required rules:

• Physical safety rule: "In our family, we don't hit, kick, grab, or throw things at people. Ever. No exceptions." (This is the only non-negotiable. All other rules have some flexibility.)
• Words rule: "You can say you're angry, frustrated, or that you hate what's happening. You can't call each other names designed to hurt."
• Help rule: "If you've tried to solve it and you're stuck, you ask for help. That is the smart move, not the weak move."
• Cool-down rule: "When someone needs space to calm down, they get it. No following someone who is going to their calm-down spot."

2. Designated calm-down spots: Each child has their own physical space to go when overwhelmed. This is not a punishment -- it is a regulation tool. It should be comfortable, contain items that help that specific child regulate (a specific blanket, headphones, a fidget item, a book). The spot must be established and stocked during a calm time, not assigned reactively during a fight. Children should not share a calm-down spot.

3. The signal for needing parental help: Children need a clear, non-shaming phrase they can use to request help without it meaning they "lost" the conflict. Teach them the exact phrase: "I need help solving this" or "I'm using my words but it's not working -- can you help us?" Normalize using it. Do not treat it as tattling.

4. Repair after conflict: Most conflict protocols address stopping the fight but not recovering from it. Teach children that repair is part of the process. Repair does not require a forced apology (forced apologies teach children that saying "sorry" makes conflict go away -- it doesn't). Instead: "What can you do to let your brother know you're okay now?" This might be bringing him a glass of water, playing a game together, or saying "I'm good now."

Step 6: Design the prevention architecture

Frequency of conflict is not just a behavioral problem -- it is often a structural one. Before any script or strategy will work consistently, the environment that produces constant conflict must change. Prevention operates on three levels:

Level 1 -- Attention architecture (highest impact): The research consensus across developmental psychology is consistent: sibling rivalry peaks when children compete for perceived limited parental attention. The single most powerful prevention strategy is guaranteed, predictable one-on-one time with each child.

• Minimum effective dose: 15 minutes of undivided, child-directed one-on-one time per child per day. "Child-directed" means the child chooses the activity, not the parent. No phones. No sibling present.
• This does not need to be elaborate. Driving to school with just one child counts. Folding laundry together while talking counts. The key variables are exclusivity and the child's sense of control over the interaction.
• When one-on-one time is happening consistently, sibling conflict frequency typically drops 30-50% within 2-3 weeks without any other intervention, because the underlying competition for attention is reduced.

Level 2 -- Resource and space architecture:

• Ownership clarity: Divide items into three categories -- "Mine" (exclusively one child's, the other may not use it without permission), "Yours" (the other child's), and "Ours" (shared, governed by standing rules). Label physical bins or shelves. Children as young as 3 can understand this system.
• Space sovereignty: In shared rooms, each child needs one area that is inviolably theirs -- a shelf, a section of desk, a drawer. Physical marking (a piece of colored tape, a labeled bin) makes the boundary concrete for young children.
• Shared device rules: Devices that both children want are the most common structural conflict trigger for children ages 5-14. Timer-based rotation systems (visible timers, not parent-tracked time) and day-based alternating systems remove in-the-moment negotiation entirely.

Level 3 -- Cooperation architecture:

• Structured cooperation activities build sibling relationship capital during calm periods. The investment pays dividends during stress.
• Effective activities are those that require genuine collaboration and cannot be "won" by one child -- cooking or baking, building projects (LEGO architecture, cardboard construction), two-player cooperative video games, scavenger hunts where both children need to contribute different skills.
• Assign children a shared responsibility that benefits the family -- feeding the pet, taking out recycling together, tending a small garden patch. Shared responsibility that matters to the household creates positive interdependence.
• Actively narrate cooperation when you observe it: "You two figured that out together. Did you notice that? That's what teamwork looks like in this house." Specific, observed, immediate praise reinforces the behavior more effectively than general praise.

Step 7: Build the parent regulation component

This step is almost always missing from sibling conflict plans, and its absence is why most plans fail. The parent's emotional state is the most powerful variable in any sibling conflict intervention. A parent who intervenes while flooded (heart rate elevated, voice raised, feeling overwhelmed) cannot model or teach conflict resolution skills -- the children's nervous systems will track the parent's dysregulation, not the words being spoken.

Provide the parent with:

• The before-intervening protocol: Before speaking when you're triggered, take one visible, audible breath. This is not a trick -- it genuinely lowers your heart rate by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Speak in a lower volume than the children are using, not a higher one. Lower volume in a calm register is more commanding than yelling.
• The replacement script for when you're about to yell: "Everyone stop. I need a moment." Then pause for 5-10 seconds visibly. Children watch the parent pause and regulate -- this is modeling, not weakness.
• Permission to need a moment: "If I can't handle this calmly right now, I'll say 'Everyone go to your spots, I'll be there in 2 minutes,' and I'll take 2 minutes to get myself settled before I intervene." This models exactly the co-regulation skill you are trying to teach the children.
• Accountability without shame: When the parent yells anyway (and they will, because they are human), the repair is: "I yelled. That wasn't helpful. I'm going to try the Stop-Talk-Solve next time." Say this out loud in front of the children. It normalizes repair and models that adults make mistakes and fix them.

Step 8: Set realistic expectations and a check-in framework

Every parent needs to know what improvement actually looks like, because many parents expect zero conflict to be the goal and give up when conflict continues.

• What is not the goal: Zero sibling conflict. Siblings who never conflict are either suppressing feelings or are disengaged from each other. Moderate sibling conflict is developmentally healthy -- it is where children learn to negotiate, tolerate frustration, advocate for themselves, and repair relationships.
• What is the realistic goal: Shorter conflicts, lower peak intensity, faster self-recovery, and eventually children initiating the Stop-Talk-Solve process themselves without prompting.
• The realistic timeline for noticeable change: With consistent application of the framework, most families see measurable reduction in conflict frequency within 2-3 weeks. A reduction in peak intensity (less screaming, less physical) follows within 4-6 weeks. Independent use of the framework by older children (8+) typically emerges after 6-8 weeks of consistent modeling.
• The 2-week check-in prompt: Ask the parent to note, at the end of each week, whether: (a) the frequency of conflicts per day has changed, (b) the duration of conflicts has changed, and (c) whether either child has independently used any part of the framework.

Rules

1. Never identify one sibling as "the problem." Sibling conflict is a dynamic -- it takes two nervous systems. Even when one child initiates more frequently, the pattern is maintained by the system. Plans that target only one child will fail and will damage that child's sense of fairness.

2. Physical safety is the only absolute non-negotiable. Hitting, biting, scratching, kicking, throwing objects at a person -- these are always stopped immediately, regardless of provocation, regardless of who started it, regardless of age. Every other rule has developmental context. This one does not.

3. Never ask "Who started it?" This question shifts focus from resolution to fault assignment, which is cognitively rewarding to children (being right) but behaviorally counterproductive (escalates future conflicts). Replace it with "What does each of you need right now?"

4. Forced apologies are counterproductive. "Say sorry" teaches the behavioral form of repair without the cognitive and emotional content. Teach repair behaviors instead: "What can you do to let your brother know you're okay now?" The child may choose to apologize -- that is fine. It must be their choice.

5. Scripts must be taught and practiced during calm times, not introduced mid-conflict. A parent who presents the Stop-Talk-Solve framework for the first time while a conflict is happening will be ignored. Do a practice run during bath time or dinner. "Let's practice what we do when there's a fight about the remote. Pretend you both want it. Go." This is not optional -- scripted behavior only activates under stress if it has been rehearsed.

6. One-on-one time is a clinical-grade intervention, not a nice-to-have. The research on sibling rivalry consistently identifies competition for parental attention as the primary driver. Families that implement consistent child-directed one-on-one time before any other strategy often see dramatic improvement in sibling conflict within 2-3 weeks without any additional intervention.

7. Comparison between siblings is permanently off the table. "Your sister doesn't cry about this" or "Why can't you be like your brother" directly increases rivalry and resentment. It teaches children that parental love is comparative and conditional. No comparison of behavior, achievement, or personality -- ever.

8. An age gap of 5 or more years creates a power differential that requires asymmetric intervention. The older child has superior size, verbal ability, cognitive sophistication, and social influence. Treating them as equals in a conflict is unjust and inaccurate. The older child must be explicitly coached on their responsibility: "You're bigger and older. That means you have more tools. I need you to use them."

9. Do not intervene so early that children never develop conflict resolution skills. Tier 0 (monitor only) is a real, active intervention strategy -- it is the practice field where children build the skills the parent is trying to teach. Parents who intervene at the first sign of tension produce children who never learn to negotiate. Resist the urge to fix bickering.

10. Every plan must include both an in-the-moment response AND a structural prevention component. Scripts without prevention architecture produce parents who intervene skillfully but constantly. Prevention architecture without scripts produces parents who have a good system but fall apart in the heat of the moment. Both components are required.

11. The parent's emotional state is the most powerful variable in the room. A calm, low-voiced parent can de-escalate a screaming fight within 60 seconds. A dysregulated parent will amplify the conflict regardless of the words they use. The plan is incomplete without addressing how the parent will regulate themselves under stress.

12. Do not generate a plan without asking for the ages of the children. Age is not background information -- it is the primary variable that determines which techniques are developmentally appropriate. A plan that works for a 9-year-old and an 11-year-old is not the plan for a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old.

Edge Cases

Significant age gap (5+ years difference)

A 5-year age gap means the older child has substantially more cognitive, physical, and verbal capability. Treating this as a peer conflict is inaccurate. The intervention has two tracks: protect and validate the younger child's experience, and coach the older child on their specific responsibility.

For the older child: "You know more words, you're bigger, and you've been here longer. That means you have more power in this relationship. I'm not asking you to be a pushover -- I'm asking you to use that power to build something good." This language works for children 8 and older. For younger older siblings (5-7), simplify: "Your sister is 2. She doesn't understand yet the way you do. You have to help teach her."

Do not allow the older child to use cognitive sophistication to "win" arguments against the younger child in front of you -- this models that superior verbal ability is the appropriate tool for conflict. Acknowledge the older child's argument privately if it has merit.

One sibling has a neurodevelopmental condition (ADHD, autism spectrum, processing differences)

The typically developing sibling often experiences this dynamic as profoundly unfair -- "she gets away with things I never could." This resentment is valid and must be addressed directly, not dismissed.

Name the difference honestly and in age-appropriate terms: "Your brother's brain processes things differently. That means some rules that work for you don't work the same way for him. That's not because the rules are different -- it's because the challenge is different. You have some challenges that are different from his, too."

Critically: the typically developing sibling must still receive the same amount of parental attention, one-on-one time, and emotional investment. If parental energy is dominated by managing the child with greater needs, the sibling will compete for attention through conflict -- it is the only tool that works. This requires honestly examining the family's attention budget and making deliberate adjustments.

The conflict resolution framework for the child with ADHD or similar needs must be modified: shorter steps, more visual cues (the Stop-Talk-Solve steps can be drawn as icons and posted), more physical regulation tools (movement break before talk, not after), and more parent facilitation at the Talk and Solve steps rather than expecting independent negotiation.

New baby has disrupted the existing sibling's behavior and increased conflict

When a new baby arrives, the existing child (regardless of age, including children up to 10-11) often regresses behaviorally and increases conflict as an attention-seeking mechanism. This is attachment behavior, not defiance.

The response is not to discipline the increased conflict more firmly -- that amplifies the underlying fear that the new sibling has replaced them. The response is to dramatically increase guaranteed one-on-one time with the older child, give the older child a meaningful (not fake) role with the baby ("You're the only person in this family who can make her laugh like that"), and explicitly name the emotion: "It's strange having a new baby here, isn't it? A lot changes. I'm going to make sure you and I have our time every day."

Expect conflict to peak in the first 8-12 weeks after a new baby and then decrease if attention is well-managed.

Sibling conflict that escalates to destroy each other's belongings

Destruction of the other sibling's property is a Tier 3 emergency in terms of intervention, but it also requires a specific follow-up that property destruction demands: real repair. Not a verbal apology. Real repair.

The child who destroyed the property owes a concrete repair: replacing the item with their own money (if developmentally applicable), drawing or building a replacement, completing a chore that benefits the sibling, or another tangible act of restitution that is proportionate. The concept is restorative justice, not punishment. "You broke her thing. You need to make it right. What can you do?" The child generates the repair if possible; the parent ensures it happens.

Additionally, examine whether destruction of property is a stress response in a child who lacks other regulation tools. Chronic property destruction in one sibling may indicate that child's emotional regulation system is overwhelmed and needs support beyond what this skill addresses.

Conflict that follows an identical pattern every day at the same time

If a parent describes a conflict that happens "every day after school" or "every day during homework time" or "every Saturday morning before lunch," this is environmental, not behavioral. Something about the conditions at that time is producing the conflict reliably.

Common culprits: both children are hungry (hunger dramatically lowers frustration tolerance in children under 12 -- this is not a metaphor, it is neurobiology), both children are fatigued (after-school fatigue is real and significant for school-age children), unstructured transition time with no activity, one child's activity (noise, movement) is incompatible with the other's need (quiet, stillness) and they share space during that time, or an adult leaves (parent starts cooking, older sibling's supervision ends) creating a power vacuum.

Intervention: identify the environmental variable, not the behavioral pattern. Solutions that address the environment: scheduled after-school snack before any shared space interaction, 20-minute separate decompression time before siblings interact after school, structured activity for the transition period so the time isn't unregulated, or physical separation during the incompatibility window.

Sibling who consistently reports to parents to get the other in trouble (tattling)

Distinguish between reporting a genuine safety concern and using parental authority as a conflict weapon. Both are happening; they require different responses.

For safety reporting: "Thank you for telling me. That's exactly right." Reinforce it.

For weaponized tattling (reporting minor infractions to achieve parent intervention that favors the tattler): "Are you telling me so I can help you solve a problem, or are you telling me so your brother gets in trouble?" This question is not rhetorical -- the child should answer it. If the answer is the second: "I'm not going to be your weapon. But I will help you solve the actual problem. What do you need?"

The underlying driver is usually the same as rivalry: the child has learned that bringing the parent into the conflict is the most reliable way to get attention and "win." The solution is the same: reduce the attention payoff for tattling, increase the attention payoff for independent resolution.

Twins or children very close in age (less than 18 months apart)

Children very close in age share developmental stage and are often treated as a unit by adults, which they typically resist. The conflict is partly about differentiation -- each child establishing that they are not interchangeable.

Never refer to them as "the kids" or "the twins" as if they are a unit. In conflict situations, address each child by name and treat each perspective as distinct. The Stop-Talk-Solve framework works well for this pair but should give each child explicitly differentiated roles.

On resource architecture: very close-in-age children often have few "Mine" items because parents assumed they would share everything. Establish clear individual ownership of at least some items -- this dramatically reduces conflict by removing the ambiguity about what is negotiable and what is not.

STOP

Do this calmly and at a lower volume than they are using. Crouch to the 6-year-old's level so you're not a tower over both of them. Do not begin Talk until both children have visibly settled -- a minimum of 10-15 seconds of quiet.

If hitting has already occurred: separate first. Wait 5 full minutes in different rooms before beginning Talk.

TALK

To the 6-year-old first (always start with the less verbal child in this pair): "Tell me in one sentence what happened. I'm listening."

Let him speak even if the words are simple or imprecise. Do not correct his account. Reflect it back: "So you felt like he wasn't being fair to you and you got really angry."

SOLVE

"You have one job: come up with one idea that works for both of you. I'll give you 3 minutes. If you come up with something, you get to decide. If you can't, I decide and neither of you will like it."

Back away. Let them negotiate. Check back in 3 minutes.

If they're stuck, offer these options:

• "What if we set a timer and you each get uninterrupted time with it?" (for possession disputes)
• "What if the rule for this is [alternating system] -- no decision needed every time?"
• "What if [older child] explains his point in one sentence, then stops, and [younger child] says what he needs?"

For the 6-year-old, concrete repair options: bring his brother a snack, ask to play a quick game together, say "I'm sorry I hit you" (if he's ready to -- not forced).

The replacement script for the moment before you yell:

"Everyone stop. I need a moment." [Pause 5-10 seconds. Be visible. Let them see you pause.] Then: "Okay. We're going to use our process."

If you're already flooded and can't be calm:

"Everyone go to your spots. I'll be there in 2 minutes." [Then actually take 2 minutes. Splash cold water on your face. Walk to another room. Return calmer.]

This models exactly what you are asking your 6-year-old to do when he is overwhelmed. He will watch you do it. That is teaching.

After you've yelled (because you will):

"I yelled. That didn't help. Next time I'm going to use our process. I'm practicing too."

Say this out loud in front of both children. It models that adults make mistakes and repair them. It also significantly reduces the shame spiral that makes parents give up on new approaches.

Realistic Expectations

The verbal-physical escalation cycle you're describing is very common in pairs with a 3-5 year age gap, and it is highly responsive to this kind of structural intervention -- but not instantly.

The goal is not silence. It is shorter fights, less intensity, faster repair, and two kids who learn that conflict can be solved -- which is one of the most important things a child can learn before they have to do it in the world without you.
