Creating a Supportive Home Environment
Routines and Structure
Neurodivergent children often thrive with predictable routines:
- Visual schedules: Pictures or written steps for daily routines
- Transition warnings: "In 5 minutes, we will switch to..." (use timers)
- Consistent structure: Same general flow each day, especially mornings and bedtimes
- Flexibility within structure: The structure provides safety; small choices within it provide agency

During Meltdowns
A meltdown is not a tantrum. It is a neurological overwhelm response.
