Process
Step 1: Gather the Pet Profile (Ask Before Producing a Plan)
Before generating any checklist or schedule, collect enough information to produce a calibrated output rather than a generic one. A kitten in a studio apartment with a toddler needs completely different guidance than an adult dog in a house with a yard.
Species: Dog or cat -- this determines litter vs. elimination walks, scratching needs, containment strategy, and enrichment type
Age group: Puppy/kitten (under 6 months), adolescent (6-18 months), adult (18 months to 7 years), senior (7+ years for dogs, 10+ years for cats) -- age governs vaccination urgency, energy level, chewing intensity, and adjustment expectations
Source: Breeder, rescue/shelter, foster-to-adopt, owner rehome -- source determines what health documentation exists, whether the pet has had socialization, and what baseline vet work may already be done
Living situation: House with fenced yard, house without fence, apartment above ground floor, apartment at ground level -- this governs elimination planning, exercise logistics, and safety-proofing priorities
Household composition: Other pets (species and sex matter), children (with ages), adults who will interact with the pet regularly
Lifestyle: Work schedule (hours at home vs. away), whether someone will be home during the day, budget for initial setup (not to suggest brands, but to flag whether cost-effective vs. premium options are relevant)
If the user has already provided this information conversationally, extract it without asking again. Fill in defaults where information is missing and state the assumptions clearly in the output.
Step 2: Build the Supplies Checklist with Age and Household Calibration
Do not produce a flat list of generic items. Every item should be specified with size guidance, quantity, material preference, and reasoning. Distinguish between pre-arrival essentials and first-month additions.
Dogs -- Pre-Arrival Essentials:
Crate: Wire crates with a divider panel are preferred for puppies because they allow you to start small (just enough room to stand, turn, lie down) and expand as the dog grows. A crate too large for a puppy creates space the dog will use as a bathroom corner. Adult dogs: size to the dog, not the breed standard -- the dog should stand without hunching and turn without bumping walls. Plastic airline crates work for dogs who prefer more enclosed dens.
Collar: Flat buckle collar in nylon or leather, fitted so exactly two fingers slide snugly between the collar and the neck. For puppies, buy a small adjustable collar -- you will replace it within 8-12 weeks as they grow. Avoid choke chains, prong collars, and head halters in the first week -- those are training tools requiring professional guidance.
ID tag: Engrave the dog's name and your mobile phone number at minimum. Have this ready before Day 1 -- more dogs escape during the first week in a new home than at any other time because they are disoriented and not yet bonded.
Leash: A 6-foot flat leash in nylon or leather is the standard for controlled walking. Retractable leashes teach dogs to pull (the mechanism rewards forward pressure) and are not appropriate for a dog learning leash manners.
Bowls: Stainless steel is preferred over plastic (plastic scratches and harbors bacteria; some dogs develop contact dermatitis from plastic bowls) and over ceramic (chips can harbor bacteria and lead paint in imported ceramics is a documented risk). Weighted base prevents tipping. Two bowls minimum: one for food, one for water.
Food: Ask the source (breeder, rescue, foster) exactly what brand and formula the pet is eating. Buy that exact food for the first 10-14 days regardless of your long-term feeding plan. Transition to a new food over 7-10 days: Days 1-3: 75% old / 25% new; Days 4-6: 50/50; Days 7-9: 25% old / 75% new; Day 10+: new food only. GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea) in the first week is often diet-transition related, not illness.
Enzymatic cleaner: This is not optional for puppies or any pet whose housetraining is uncertain. Regular household cleaners neutralize odor for humans but leave the specific protein compounds (uric acid crystals) that dogs and cats can detect. Uric acid crystals are not water-soluble and require enzymatic breakdown. An enzymatic cleaner must soak the area, not just be spritzed on top, and must air-dry to complete the chemical process.
Crate pad or bedding: Machine-washable. For puppies, old towels from the source (if the rescue or breeder will provide them) carry familiar scent and reduce first-night distress significantly.
Chew toys (puppies): Puppies from 8-20 weeks are in an intense teething phase -- the urge to chew is neurological, not misbehavior. Provide at minimum: one rubber teething toy (freezable rubber toys filled with kibble or wet food provide both chewing and cooling relief for inflamed gums), one rope toy, one stuffable hollow toy. Rotate every 3-4 days to maintain novelty.
Cats -- Pre-Arrival Essentials:
Litter boxes: The universal rule is one box per cat plus one additional. A single cat household needs two boxes. Place them in different locations -- not stacked side by side -- because a cat who is ambushed at one box needs access to another. Size matters: the box should be 1.5 times the length of the cat. Most commercially sold boxes are undersized for adult cats.
Litter type: Unscented, clumping clay litter is the most accepted substrate across the widest range of cats. Scented litters are designed for human preference, not feline, and many cats will reject them. Do not switch litter types in the first month. Ask the source what litter the cat was using and replicate it.
Litter box placement: Quiet, low-traffic, accessible locations. Not next to the washing machine (noise) or the food bowls (cats do not eliminate where they eat -- this is instinctive). Not in a closet with a swinging door that could block access.
Carrier: Hard-shell or soft-sided carrier with a top-loading option -- top-loading carriers allow you to lower a reluctant cat in rather than forcing them in headfirst, which reduces carrier aversion dramatically. Leave the carrier in the safe room from Day 1 with a familiar-smelling blanket inside. The carrier should be a neutral or positive space, not something that only appears before a vet visit.
Scratching surfaces: Provide both vertical and horizontal options before arrival. Cats scratch to deposit scent from paw glands, to shed claw sheaths, and to stretch. A cat that arrives without appropriate scratching outlets will find its own. Vertical posts must be tall enough for the cat to fully extend (minimum 28-32 inches for an adult cat). Place at least one scratching post near each sleeping area -- cats scratch upon waking.
Water: Cats are evolutionarily adapted to meet hydration needs through prey rather than drinking. Many cats have low thirst drives and are chronically mildly dehydrated on dry food diets. Wide, shallow bowls prevent whisker contact with the bowl edge (whisker fatigue). Water fountains increase voluntary water intake in most cats and are worth considering in the first month, especially for cats on dry food diets.
Cat tree or perches: Height is security for cats. A cat that cannot get above ground level in a stressful situation has no escape route by its own behavioral logic. A cat tree placed in the main living area provides scratching, sleeping, climbing, and a vantage point -- four needs in one piece of furniture.
Step 3: Conduct Room-by-Room Home Safety Assessment
Safety-proofing is not optional and must be completed before the pet arrives. Walk through the following categories methodically.
Toxins -- most common and most dangerous:
Dogs are indiscriminate eaters and the risk of ingestion is higher; cats are generally more selective but can be poisoned by grooming toxins off their coat or paws. Know the difference:

Check gate latches -- install a secondary latch or carabiner clip, because dogs learn to push gate latches open by accident and then deliberately
Identify and remove any mushrooms growing in the yard before the puppy's first outdoor time -- wild mushroom toxicity is highly variable and some species are rapidly fatal
Step 4: Build the First-Week Schedule with Time-of-Day Specificity
The schedule must account for the age of the pet because developmental and physiological needs differ dramatically.
Puppy elimination physiology baseline: A puppy can approximately hold its bladder for one hour per month of age plus one (a 2-month-old puppy = approximately 3-hour maximum, but awake and active puppies need to go out more frequently than this ceiling suggests -- every 30-45 minutes when awake and playing). The maximum should never be relied on as a target -- it is the outer limit, not the goal.
Kitten safe-room protocol: A new kitten or cat should start in a single room with all resources (food, water, litter, scratching, sleeping, hiding options) and be allowed to expand access to the rest of the home only after showing confident behaviors: eating consistently, using the litter box reliably, approaching humans voluntarily, and exploring the room with tail up rather than crouched and low. This process takes 1-5 days for confident kittens and 1-4 weeks for shy or previously unsocialized kittens. Forcing access to more space before the cat is ready increases chronic stress and is a leading cause of inappropriate elimination problems.
The 3-3-3 Rule: A widely used framework in shelter and rescue communities. The numbers are approximations, not deadlines:
First 3 days: the pet is overwhelmed, may not eat well, may hide, may not show its real personality. This is not a sign of a problem -- it is normal decompression.
First 3 weeks: the pet begins learning the routine, showing more personality, testing boundaries. This is when behavioral patterns become more predictable.
First 3 months: the pet feels genuinely at home. Some rescue pets, especially those with trauma histories, take longer at each stage.
Day 1 specific protocols:
Dogs:
Arrive home during a calm, low-stimulus time. Not on a day when multiple family members or friends are gathering to "meet the puppy" -- this is highly stressful for an already-disoriented animal
The first step after arriving is a leashed walk to the designated elimination area in the yard -- not inside first. The car ride is stressful and the bladder is likely full
Introduce the inside of the house room by room, starting with one room, ideally the room where the crate will be located
Introduce the crate with the door open, treats scattered inside, and a worn piece of your clothing (your scent reduces anxiety)
Cats:
Carry the carrier directly to the prepared safe room and set it on the floor. Open the carrier door. Do not reach inside to remove the cat -- let the cat emerge on its own timeline
Leave the room and give the cat 30-60 minutes of complete quiet before returning
When returning, sit or lie on the floor at the cat's level -- do not approach; let the cat approach you
Step 5: Plan and Prepare for the First Veterinary Visit
This visit is not optional and is not something to schedule "when you have time." The first vet visit serves as a health baseline and should occur within 5-7 days of arrival for all newly adopted pets.
What to bring:
All adoption paperwork, surrender forms, and vaccination records
A fresh fecal sample collected within 4-6 hours of the visit (seal in a zip-lock bag) -- this allows the vet to run a fecal flotation to check for intestinal parasites, which are extremely common in shelter and rescue animals regardless of health certificates
A list of questions prepared in advance (use the checklist below)
Vaccination schedule expectations by age:
Puppies under 16 weeks: core vaccines (distemper-parvovirus-adenovirus combination, commonly abbreviated as DHPP or DA2PP) are given every 3-4 weeks starting at 6-8 weeks of age, with the final booster at 14-16 weeks. Rabies: given at 12-16 weeks depending on state law. Until the puppy series is complete, avoid high-traffic dog areas (dog parks, pet store floors, unknown dogs) because immunity is not complete.
Kittens under 16 weeks: core vaccines (FVRCP -- rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia) given every 3-4 weeks starting at 6-8 weeks. Rabies at 12-16 weeks. Feline leukemia (FeLV) vaccine for kittens with any outdoor access or exposure risk.
Adult adoptees with unknown vaccine history: typically receive a single booster of core vaccines at the first visit, with boosters timed from that date forward
Adult adoptees with documented vaccine history: review records with the vet to confirm timing of next due boosters
Parasite prevention:
Heartworm (dogs): monthly preventatives require the dog to be confirmed heartworm-negative before starting. Dogs over 7 months who haven't been on prevention should be tested before being given preventatives because giving prevention to a heartworm-positive dog can cause a reaction.
Flea and tick: topical or oral prevention should be discussed at the first visit. Most shelter animals have been treated, but the timing and product should be confirmed to avoid double-dosing within a safe interval.
Intestinal parasites: roundworms and hookworms are so common in puppies and kittens that many veterinarians treat presumptively with pyrantel even before fecal results return. Giardia requires specific treatment and is not covered by standard dewormers.
Spay/neuter timing: Recommendations have evolved. Traditional guidance was 6 months for both species, but breed-specific research (particularly for large and giant breed dogs) now often recommends waiting until 12-24 months to allow growth plate closure. Discuss the specific pet's breed and size at the first vet visit rather than assuming a universal timeline.
Step 6: Introduce the Pet to Other Household Members and Pets
Introductions are where many first-week plans break down. Rushed introductions cause fights, injuries, and long-term behavioral damage to inter-household relationships that can take months or years to repair.
Children (under 8 years):
Supervise all interactions without exception for the first 4 weeks minimum
Teach the child the two-second rule before any new pet: count two seconds before reaching toward the animal to allow the animal to sniff and orient
Create a pet-only safe space (crate, cat tree, gated room) that the child is explicitly taught not to enter or disturb -- this gives the pet a reliable escape route and prevents the animal from feeling trapped, which is the most common precursor to defensive bites and scratches
Puppies use their mouth to explore and play -- they do not know biting hurts. Children cannot reliably interpret the difference between a playing puppy nip and an aggressive bite, so adult supervision is not just recommended but physiologically necessary for the child's safety
Dog to dog introductions:
First meeting: neutral territory only (a park, a neighbor's yard, anywhere that is not the home yard which the resident dog has scented-marked as territory)
Both dogs on leash, both handlers present -- do not let dogs run together off-leash until they have had multiple successful on-leash interactions
Read body language: loose wiggly posture, play bow, brief sniffing and disengaging = positive. Stiff posture, whale eye (whites of eyes visible), raised hackles, hard stare = separate immediately without drama and try again later
Bring the dogs home together after the successful neutral meeting rather than introducing a new dog into a yard where the resident dog is already set up
Feed separately for at minimum 2 weeks -- resource guarding between dogs who do not yet have an established relationship is a leading cause of bites
Cat to cat introductions:
Day 1-3: complete separation. New cat in safe room. Resident cat has full house. Swap bedding between the two cats so scent exchange happens before visual contact.
Day 4-7: feed both cats on opposite sides of the closed safe room door. This creates a positive association with the other cat's scent (food = good feeling = that smell is okay). Gradually move bowls closer to the door over several days.
Days 7-14: crack the door with a door stopper allowing visual contact but not physical contact. Watch for hissing and posturing -- this is normal and does not mean the introduction has failed. It means the cats are still negotiating.
Full access: only when both cats are eating normally, both are using their litter boxes, neither is showing sustained stress behaviors. This may take 2-6 weeks. Rushing this process is the leading cause of chronic inter-cat conflict in multi-cat households.
Dog to cat introductions:
The cat must always have access to elevated space or a room the dog cannot enter. This is non-negotiable. A cat with no escape from a dog will eventually be forced into a defensive posture that can injure both animals.
The dog must be behind a baby gate or on leash for all initial interactions -- never loose and uncontrolled around a new cat
Reward the dog heavily for looking away from the cat (this is called an "auto-watch" or "look at that" incompatible behavior protocol -- it creates a positive association with the cat's presence while preventing fixation)
Never leave them unsupervised until the dog is completely reliable with the cat in an observed context over at least 2-3 weeks
Step 7: Identify Normal Stress Behaviors vs. Veterinary Red Flags
New owners frequently panic over normal adjustment behaviors and sometimes miss genuine medical emergencies. Provide clear criteria for each.
Normal adjustment behaviors (do not require veterinary contact):
Not eating for 24-48 hours on arrival (stress suppresses appetite in dogs and cats -- longer than 48 hours without eating warrants a vet call)
Hiding, especially in cats -- a cat that hides for the first 1-3 days is decompressing normally
Loose stool for 2-3 days (diet transition plus stress causes GI disruption -- beyond 3 days or if there is blood, consult a vet)
Whining or crying at night in a crate (puppy) for the first 3-5 nights -- separation distress is normal as the puppy adjusts to sleeping alone for the first time
Not using the litter box for 12-24 hours in a new cat (especially if the cat is hiding) -- ensure the box is accessible and they know where it is; beyond 24 hours warrants attention
Require veterinary attention -- call or visit same day:
Vomiting more than twice in 24 hours, or any vomiting accompanied by lethargy
Diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours, or any diarrhea with blood (even a streak)
Labored breathing, open-mouth breathing (in cats, any open-mouth breathing is an emergency)
Straining to urinate or producing no urine (especially cats -- urinary blockage can be fatal within 24-48 hours)
Swollen abdomen (in dogs: bloat/GDV is a surgical emergency)
Not eating for more than 48 hours in dogs, 24-36 hours in cats (cats are at particular risk for hepatic lipidosis if they stop eating for even 48-72 hours)
Any suspected ingestion of a toxin -- call the ASPCA Poison Control or your emergency vet immediately, do not wait for symptoms
