• Hopsworks: Open-source, feature store + model registry + serving
  • Best for: full platform teams, on-prem or cloud
• When NOT to use a feature store:
  • < 10 features, single model, no feature sharing → just use a database
  • Feature store is for SHARING features across models + ensuring consistency

Experiment Tracking

• MLflow: Open-source, widely adopted, Databricks-backed
  • Tracking: log params, metrics, artifacts per run
  • Model Registry: stage transitions (staging → production → archived)
  • Best for: most teams — largest ecosystem, simplest setup
  • Docker: mlflow server, pair with postgres (backend) + S3/minio (artifacts)

Known Gotchas

• Training-serving skew: the #1 ML production bug — features differ between training and serving
• Feature stores: solve skew BUT add operational complexity — don't adopt before you have the problem
• MLflow: model registry stage transitions are manual by default — automate or forget
• DVC: large dataset pulls are SLOW — use dvc pull with filters, not full dataset
• Experiment tracking: log DECISIONS not just metrics — "why did we try this" matters more than loss curves
• Model monitoring: accuracy degradation is a lagging indicator — monitor input distributions first (data drift)
• Reproducibility: pin EVERYTHING — Python version, package versions, data snapshot, random seed
