The procedure:

VM008: Exact Analytical Model Followed by Numerical Validation

When to apply: When seeking to explain a spacecraft observation with a minimal, analytically tractable model that captures the essential physics without approximation.

The procedure:

1. Identify the key observational constraint (e.g., "switchbacks have near-constant |B|").
2. Formulate an analytically solvable model that satisfies the constraint exactly (not approximately).
3. Verify that the exact solution has the required properties (stability, far-field behavior, topology).
4. Run direct MHD simulations initialized with the exact solution to confirm stability.
5. Compare the model's 1D projections to actual spacecraft time series — if the projection matches, the model is consistent with observations.

Why it works: An exact solution is stronger than a numerical construct or a perturbative approximation because it proves the solution exists without approximation. For the Alfvénon, the exact solution was known to be impossible by some accounts — finding it (even in a specialized form) is a non-trivial theoretical result. Numerical validation then confirms it is stable under realistic conditions.
