The 3 Story Structures That Convert

1. "They Laughed When..." (Gene Schwartz / Schwab)

The most classic in direct response. Structure:

• The hero tries something others doubted
• People mock or ignore them
• The hero proves them wrong
• The reader identifies with the hero and wants the same result

"They laughed when I sat down at the piano — but when I started to play..."

Use when: the product goes against common sense, the hero is an underdog, or the result is surprising.

2. Hero / Journey (Transformation)

Classic narrative arc structure:

• Initial situation: hero in a state of pain or stagnation
• Trigger: event that forces change
• Attempts and failures: shows the hero tried other solutions
• Discovery: finds the product / method
• Transformation: the specific and measurable "after"
• Call to action: invitation for the reader to do the same

Use when: you want to build deep empathy and justify the solution.

3. ABT — "And... But... Therefore" (Conflict Structure)

Developed by Randy Olson, used by the best copywriters to save words without losing impact:

• "And" — context and initial situation (the world before)
• "But" — the conflict or problem that breaks the balance
• "Therefore" — the resolution and resulting action

"Ron had a $300,000 retirement fund invested in mutual funds. And he was living comfortably. But in 2020, everything turned upside down. Therefore he sought an alternative — and in 8 months he doubled his net worth."

Use when: you need a short and impactful story (email, ad intro, VSL opening).

How to Create the "Mental Movie"

The secret to Halbert and Schwartz's stories: specific sensory details that transform words into images:

Avoid abstractions: "He was in financial difficulty"

Use concrete and sensory: "It was Thursday, 7am. Ron looked at his bank statement: $1,847.00. Electric bill, internet, groceries — and he still hadn't paid October's rent."

Rules of the mental movie:

• Include date, place, time whenever possible
• Say what the character WAS DOING when the event happened
• Use direct dialogue when possible — it's more vivid than narrated
• Describe the internal emotion (what the hero felt, thought, feared)

Fatal Mistakes

1. Implicit hero, not described: the reader doesn't identify with someone they don't know
2. Lack of tension: if the hero never suffered or failed, the resolution has no impact
3. Story without a clear purpose: every story in copy must lead to a specific point (product, mechanism, offer)
4. Deviation from the main idea: story about one subject, copy about another = fatal disconnection
5. Generic details: "a middle-aged woman" vs "Maria, 47, teacher in Austin, mother of two"
6. Vague resolution: "and everything got better" doesn't sell. "In 6 weeks, she lost 20 lbs and fit back into jeans she hadn't worn in 10 years" sells
