Resolve any ability check or skill test the player attempts.
Copy this checklist and mark each step complete as you go:
- [ ] 1. Load character stats, proficiencies, and conditions
- [ ] 2. Determine skill/ability and set DC
- [ ] 3. Check for advantage/disadvantage
- [ ] 4. Roll the check (d20 + modifiers vs DC)
- [ ] 5. Narrate the outcome (success/failure with flavor)

Read the character file to get:
Based on what the player wants to do, determine:
Match the action to the most appropriate skill from the skill list in RULES.md. If the action doesn't clearly map to a skill, use a raw ability check (just the attribute modifier, no skill bonus).
Set a fair DC using the DC table in RULES.md (5 trivial → 10 easy → 15 medium → 20 hard → 25 very hard → 30 nearly impossible). Explain the DC choice briefly so the player understands the challenge.
Apply advantage or disadvantage based on circumstances:

If advantage/disadvantage:

Describe the character succeeding. The margin of success can flavor the narration:
Describe the failure, but make it interesting, not just "you fail":
Not an automatic success (unlike attacks), but describe the attempt as impressively as possible. If the total still beats the DC, make it spectacular.
Not an automatic failure, but describe the attempt as comically or dramatically poor. If the total somehow still beats the DC, they succeed despite themselves.
For significant skill checks:
If the check is against another creature (e.g., Stealth vs Perception, Deception vs Insight):

Handle tactical combat encounters with initiative, attacks, saving throws, and dice rolls. Use this when the player wants to fight enemies or resolve combat.
Guide the player through creating a new RPG character, or display an existing character sheet. Use this when the player wants to create or roll a new character, or when they ask to view, show, or display a character sheet.
Handle exploration of surroundings, searching for secrets, and investigating the environment. Use this when the player wants to explore, search, or investigate.
Handle character advancement when XP reaches the level-up threshold. Use this when a character levels up or the player asks to level up.
Generate treasure, magical items, and loot drops for combat, treasure hoards, and hidden caches. Use this when generating loot or the player searches for treasure.
Handle spellcasting, ritual magic, magical item use, and wild magic events. Use this when the player wants to cast a spell or use magic.
