Handshake semantics: If the sidecar already classifies every input file, the MANDATORY PRE-STEP anonymization gate below still runs but skips re-scanning files whose status is ANONYMIZED or OVERRIDE. If inductive (data-driven):
- Read data excerpts (minimum 3-5 transcripts or documents)
- Generate initial codes from recurring patterns, surprising statements, and theoretically salient passages
- Use in-vivo codes (participant language) where possible
If deductive (theory-driven):
- Derive codes from the theoretical framework, prior literature, or research questions
- Map each code to its theoretical origin (cite source)
If hybrid:
- Start with deductive skeleton, then add emergent codes from data

Step 1: Line-by-Line Coding
Read the raw text (interview transcript, field notes, or document) and code segment by segment:
- Segment size: line-by-line for dense theoretical text; paragraph-level for descriptive field notes
- For each segment, assign one or more codes
- Record the exact text excerpt alongside each code
