Character Complexity

Read this skill before designing, deepening, or offering options for a character.

The Core Triangle

Desire — what the character consciously wants. Fear — what they cannot face losing or becoming. False belief — the assumption about themselves or the world that keeps them trapped.

These three do not coexist peacefully. The character's desire pulls against their fear, and their false belief shapes the strategy they use to avoid confronting both. A flat character has desire without fear, or fear without belief. A complex character is their own primary obstacle.

Light and dark from the same source

A character's greatest strength and their most damaging quality usually originate from the same place. The person who excels at surviving alone is the same person who cannot let others in. The person who fights for justice cannot tolerate ambiguity in situations that require it. This is not contradiction—it is structural coherence. The reader should be able to see both simultaneously.

Motivation depth

Surface: what the character says they want. Middle: what they actually want. Deep: what they need but cannot acknowledge wanting.

Characters rarely have access to their own deep motivation. They act from the surface and middle while the deep layer drives the actual behavior. When the deep motivation surfaces under pressure, it should feel inevitable and surprising at once.

The darkness should be recognizable

The dark side of a character is not villainy. It is a recognizable human weakness: the capacity for self-deception, for cruelty in the name of love, for sacrificing others to preserve a self-image, for choosing comfort over integrity. Readers recognize this because they have felt it themselves.

Anti-patterns

• A character whose dark side is pure malice with no comprehensible logic.
• A character who always knows exactly what they want and why.
• Backstory trauma that fully explains current behavior, leaving no mystery beneath the surface.
• A character who changes because circumstances changed, not because pressure forced a reckoning with their false belief.
• Virtue and flaw that do not share a common root.

Checklist

• What is this character's desire, fear, and false belief? Do they pull against each other?
• What is the common root of their strength and their damage?
• What do they do to avoid confronting the gap between who they are and who they believe themselves to be?
• When the pressure peaks, what do they do that surprises them about themselves?
