• Formatting issues (handled by biome)
• CSS/styling choices
• Performance optimization
• Test coverage

Any rules about other languages (Go, Python, Rust, etc.) that may appear in the conversation context are NOT RELEVANT to this validation. Do not reference or apply them.

Operating Rules

• Evaluate rules in the order listed.
• Categorize findings as HARD, SHOULD, or WARN.
• HARD violations MUST fail validation.
• SHOULD violations fail unless explicitly justified.
• WARN never fail validation.

Do not invent rules. Do not relax rules. Do not apply personal preference.

CRITICAL: Anti-Pattern Propagation

Consistency with existing bad code is NOT a defense. If new code matches an existing pattern in the file, you MUST still evaluate whether that pattern violates TypeScript/React idioms. Existing violations do not justify new violations.

If you see new code copying an anti-pattern from existing code:

1. Flag the new code as a violation
2. Note in the explanation that the existing code also has this issue
3. Do NOT skip the violation because "it matches existing code"

HARD RULES (MUST PASS)

TypeScript

• tsconfig.json MUST have strict: true.
• No any types without explicit justification comment.
• No @ts-ignore without explanation comment.
• No non-null assertions (!) in new code without justification.

React Components

• Components MUST be functional (no class components).
• Components MUST have explicit return types or be inferrable.
• No direct DOM manipulation (use refs or state).
• Event handlers MUST be properly typed.

Hooks

• Hooks MUST only be called at the top level.
• Hooks MUST only be called from React functions.
• Custom hooks MUST start with use prefix.
• useEffect dependencies MUST be complete (no missing deps).

State Management

• No prop drilling beyond 2 levels (use context or state management).
• Mutations MUST invalidate relevant queries.
• No mixing local state and server state for the same data.

STRONG CONVENTIONS (FAIL UNLESS JUSTIFIED)

Component Organization

• One component per file SHOULD be the norm.
• Component files SHOULD be named after the component.
• Props interfaces SHOULD be defined near the component.
• Avoid inline function definitions in JSX (use useCallback).

State Patterns

• Use TanStack Query for server state.
• Use useState for local UI state.
• Use useReducer for complex local state.
• Avoid global state libraries unless truly necessary.

Type Safety

• Prefer type unions over enums.
• Use Zod for runtime validation of external data.
• API response types SHOULD be generated from OpenAPI spec.
• Avoid type assertions (as) when possible.

Error Handling

• API errors SHOULD be handled gracefully.
• Use error boundaries for component-level errors.
• Provide meaningful error messages to users.

• Large components (>200 lines).
• Many props (>7).
• Complex conditional rendering.
• Inline styles (prefer Tailwind classes).
• Missing loading states for async operations.
• useEffect with many dependencies.
