History has no single method. The AHR publishes social, cultural, intellectual, political, economic,
environmental, transnational, and global history; microhistory and macro-synthesis; the history of
knowledge, emotions, and the body — each judged on its own terms. This skill helps you name your
interpretive stance, choose your scale, and defend the reading your evidence supports.
When to trigger
- Deciding the analytical lens and scale (micro vs. macro, local vs. global) for the material
- A reader asked "what is your method?" or "why this frame?"
- The interpretation feels under-theorized or, conversely, over-theorized and detached from evidence
- Bridging an interpretive claim to the documents that ground it

Defending the interpretation
- State the stance plainly. Name the lens and scale and why they fit this question — not as
jargon but as a reason a generalist accepts.
- Keep theory in service of evidence. Concepts should sharpen the reading of sources, not float
above them. Earn every abstraction from a document.
- Match scale to claim. Microhistory licenses depth, not universal generalization; global scale
licenses connection, not loss of archival specificity. Be explicit about what the scale buys.
- Avoid anachronism. Reconstruct actors' own categories before judging them by ours; flag where
you knowingly use an analytical category they lacked.
- Acknowledge interpretive limits. Say what the evidence can and cannot support; alternative
readings strengthen credibility when you address them.
Anti-patterns
- Borrowing heavy theory that the sources never actually test or need
- A "method" label with no consequence for how the evidence is read
- Microhistory that over-generalizes; global history that loses the archive
- Imposing present-day categories on past actors without flagging it
- Pretending there is one correct reading when the evidence underdetermines it
Method-fit referee patterns, and the fix
The AHR judges each interpretive approach on its own terms, which means reviewers attack the fit
between method and material rather than the method's pedigree. These are the recurring fit complaints and
the moves that answer them.

Worked vignette: choosing the scale
Consider a project built on a single merchant's surviving correspondence about an Indian Ocean voyage. As
microhistory, the letters can be read intensively for how one actor understood risk, distance, and
trust — a deep, archive-bound claim. The temptation is to let that one merchant stand for "the early modern
mercantile mind," which a reviewer will mark as over-generalization. The disciplined move keeps the micro
reading but states what the scale buys: the letters illuminate a mechanism (how trust traveled across an
ocean) that the article then tests against a second, structurally comparable correspondence — a controlled
step up in scale rather than a leap to the universal. The interpretive stance is named plainly, the theory
of trust is earned from the letters themselves, and the actors' own vocabulary of credit and obligation is
reconstructed before any modern category of "networks" is applied.

- The AHR's remit spans social, cultural, intellectual, political, economic, environmental, transnational,
and global history; no single method is privileged, so defend yours by fit, not by fashion.
- Scale is a claim, not a backdrop: be explicit about what micro, meso, macro, or transnational framing
licenses and forecloses for this evidence.
- This is a humanities venue — there is no statistical-significance bar or robustness table; persuasion
rests on source criticism and interpretive judgment (confirm any methodological expectations against the
