Common Pitfalls
1. Not using VPC Gateway Endpoints for S3 and DynamoDB
Gateway endpoints are free. Every VPC should have them. Without them, S3/DynamoDB traffic flows through NAT Gateway at $0.045/GB.
2. Running gp2 EBS volumes
gp3 is 20% cheaper with better baseline performance. Migrate all gp2 to gp3 -- zero downtime, immediate savings.
3. Lambda with default x86 architecture
ARM (Graviton2) Lambda is 20% cheaper with better performance. Switch to arm64 unless you have x86-only native dependencies.
4. Aurora Standard mode with high I/O
Aurora charges $0.20/million I/Os in Standard mode. When I/O exceeds 25% of total database cost, switch to I/O-Optimized (no per-I/O charge, storage at $0.225/GB vs $0.10/GB).
5. DynamoDB On-Demand for steady workloads
On-Demand costs 5-7x more than Provisioned at steady throughput. Monitor for 2 weeks, then switch to Provisioned + Auto Scaling.
6. Over-provisioned NAT Gateways in non-production
Production needs one NAT Gateway per AZ ($97/mo for 3 AZs). Dev/staging can use a single NAT Gateway or NAT instance (t4g.nano at ~$3/mo).
7. Unattached EBS volumes and unused Elastic IPs
Unattached volumes incur full storage charges. All public IPv4 addresses cost $3.60/mo (even when attached). Audit regularly.
8. CloudWatch Logs without retention policy
Default retention is never-expire. At $0.50/GB ingested, verbose logging can cost hundreds per month. Set retention policies and filter log levels.
9. ElastiCache clusters sized for peak in dev/test
Use cache.t4g.micro ($11.68/mo) for dev/test instead of r6g.large ($165/mo). Or use ElastiCache Serverless for variable workloads.
10. Not using ALB host-based routing to consolidate
Each ALB costs ~$16/mo minimum. Use host-based routing to serve multiple services from one ALB (up to 100 rules).
