Ethics and Moral Philosophy
THE TROLLEY PROBLEM (Philippa Foot, 1967; Judith Jarvis Thomson, 1985)

SCENARIO:
A runaway trolley is heading toward five people tied to the tracks.
You are standing next to a lever. If you pull it, the trolley diverts
to a side track where one person is tied.
Do you pull the lever?
VARIANT - THE FOOTBRIDGE (Thomson):
Same trolley, same five people. But this time you are on a bridge.
Next to you is a large stranger. If you push him off the bridge,
his body will stop the trolley, saving five but killing him.
Do you push the stranger?
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1. If you pull the lever, are you responsible for the one death?
2. Is there a moral difference between DIVERTING harm and CAUSING harm?
3. Most people pull the lever but refuse to push the stranger. Why?
- Is it the physical contact?
- Is it using a person as a means?
- Is it the intentionality of the killing?
4. What principle explains the difference between the two cases?
5. Does the number of lives saved matter? What if it were 5 vs. 2?
FRAMEWORKS:
Utilitarian: Pull the lever AND push the stranger (5 > 1).
Kantian: Do NOT push (using a person as mere means is wrong).
Lever case is debated among Kantians.
Virtue ethics: What would a person of good character do?
Is it courageous or callous?
Doctrine of Double Effect: Harm as a side effect (lever) may be
permissible; harm as a means (push) is not.
THE EXPERIENCE MACHINE (Robert Nozick, 1974)

SCENARIO:
Scientists have created a machine that can give you any experience
you desire. Once plugged in, you would believe the experiences are
real. You could experience being a great artist, having deep
friendships, traveling the world -- anything. You would never know
you were in the machine.
Would you plug in for life?
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1. If you would not plug in, what does that tell you about what you
value beyond just pleasurable experiences?
2. Does it matter that the experiences are not "real"?
What makes an experience real?
3. Do we value BEING something (actually being a good person) or
FEELING like we are something?
4. If you WOULD plug in, what does that say about the role of
authenticity in a good life?
5. How is this different from (or similar to) virtual reality,
social media, or entertainment escapism?
IMPLICATIONS:
If you refuse the machine, you are rejecting pure hedonism (the view
that pleasure is the only intrinsic good). You value something beyond
subjective experience: reality, authenticity, achievement, connection.
This challenges utilitarian views that reduce well-being to pleasure.
Personal Identity
THE SHIP OF THESEUS (ancient Greek, attributed to Plutarch)

SCENARIO:
A ship is maintained by gradually replacing each plank of wood.
Over time, every original plank is replaced. Is it still the same ship?
VARIANT: Someone collects all the original planks and builds a ship
from them. Which is the "real" Ship of Theseus?
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1. At what point (if any) does the ship become a different ship?
2. Does continuous identity require physical continuity?
3. Is identity about the MATERIAL or the PATTERN/FUNCTION?
4. How does this apply to personal identity? (Your cells replace
themselves over ~7-10 years. Are you the same person?)
5. How does this apply to organizations, bands, teams, or nations?
THE TELETRANSPORTER (Derek Parfit, 1984)

SCENARIO:
A teleporter scans your body, records every atom's position,
destroys your body, and recreates an exact copy at the destination.
The copy has all your memories, personality, and physical traits.
Is the copy YOU? Would you use the teleporter?
VARIANT: What if the machine malfunctions and creates the copy
WITHOUT destroying the original? Now there are two of you.
Which one is you? Both? Neither?
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1. Is personal identity about physical continuity or psychological
continuity (memories, personality)?
2. If the copy has all your memories and thinks it is you, is it wrong?
3. Does the existence of two copies prove that identity is not
all-or-nothing?
4. Would you be willing to "die" at the source if an exact copy
continues your life at the destination?
Epistemology
THE BRAIN IN A VAT (Hilary Putnam, 1981)

SCENARIO:
Imagine a scientist removes your brain, places it in a vat of
nutrients, and connects it to a supercomputer that simulates
normal sensory experiences. Everything you perceive -- sight, sound,
touch -- is generated by the computer. You have no way to tell
the difference.
How do you know this is not happening right now?
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1. Can you prove you are not a brain in a vat?
2. If you cannot prove it, does that mean you don't KNOW anything
about the external world?
3. Is there a practical difference between being in the real world
and being a perfectly simulated brain in a vat?
4. How does this relate to Descartes' evil demon hypothesis?
5. How does this relate to modern simulation theory?
6. Does Putnam's semantic externalism argument (that a brain in a vat
cannot meaningfully refer to real brains or real vats) resolve
the problem?

Thought Experiment Construction
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN THOUGHT EXPERIMENT

Step 1: IDENTIFY the philosophical question.
What concept or principle do you want to test?
Examples: "Is consent sufficient for moral permissibility?"
"Does knowledge require certainty?" "Is identity physical or mental?"
Step 2: ISOLATE the variable.
A good thought experiment tests ONE thing by holding everything else
constant. Identify the single factor you want to vary.
Step 3: CONSTRUCT the scenario.
Create a situation that is:
- Simple enough to be clear
- Unusual enough to prevent defaulting to habit
- Specific enough to demand a definite answer
- Fair enough that both sides have a plausible response
Step 4: FORMULATE the question.
Ask a clear yes/no or this-or-that question.
"Should you do X?" or "Is this the same Y?"
Step 5: TEST with variations.
Modify one element at a time and see if the answer changes.
Each variation that changes the answer reveals a relevant factor.
Step 6: ANALYZE the implications.
What does each answer commit the responder to?
Does the answer generalize to other cases?

FACILITATING A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT DISCUSSION

PHASE 1: PRESENT (5 minutes)
- Read the scenario aloud or share in writing
- Ensure everyone understands the setup
- Clarify any ambiguities BEFORE discussion
- Do NOT reveal "correct" answers (there often are none)
PHASE 2: INITIAL REACTIONS (5 minutes)
- Ask each person to state their gut reaction
- No justification yet -- just "I would / I wouldn't" or "Yes / No"
- Record the split (helps visualize disagreement)
PHASE 3: JUSTIFICATION (15 minutes)
- Ask: "WHY did you answer that way?"
- Look for the underlying PRINCIPLE (not just the feeling)
- When someone gives a reason, ask: "Does that principle hold
in ALL similar cases?"
- Introduce variations that test the stated principle
PHASE 4: CHALLENGE (10 minutes)
- Present the strongest argument for the opposing side
- Ask: "Can anyone defend the other position?"
- Look for inconsistencies: "Earlier you said X, but now
your principle seems to imply Y."
PHASE 5: SYNTHESIS (5 minutes)
- Summarize the key disagreements and the principles behind them
- Identify which philosophical frameworks are at play
- Note any positions that were changed or refined
- Ask: "What did this thought experiment reveal about your values?"
GROUND RULES:

KNOWLEDGE:
7. If you could know the exact date of your death, would you want to?
What would change?
8. Is there anything you believe with absolute certainty? Can you
construct a scenario that would make you doubt it?
FREE WILL:
9. If neuroscience proved that all your decisions were determined by
prior brain states, would you still hold people morally responsible?
10. You are offered a pill that eliminates all your biases and makes
you perfectly rational. Would you take it? Would you still be you?
