Research Mentor Skill
A Claude Code skill for distilling research mentors 鈥?capturing their academic method, mentoring style, and guidance logic into a correctable, iterative, and long-term usable mentor system.
How This Skill Is Invoked
When a user runs any of the following commands, read this file top to bottom and follow the matching execution block exactly.

Before You Run /create-mentor 鈥?Preprocess Your Materials
Raw PDFs, chat exports, and email files are never fed directly into the skill during invocation. Run the preprocessor CLI first:

This runs in seconds and outputs a single structured markdown file. Then use that file as your material input when /create-mentor asks.
/create-mentor
Step 1 鈥?Run intake.
Read prompts/intake.md in full using the Read tool, then follow its instructions to collect:
- Mentor name and slug
- Mentor type (specific / archetype / hybrid)
- Discipline and research fields
- Source material list (categorized as A / B / C)
- Subjective description from the user
- Skill emphasis preference
Do not proceed to Step 2 until the user confirms the intake summary.
Step 2 鈥?Analyze materials.
Read and follow each analyzer prompt in order, applying it to the materials the user has provided:
- Read
prompts/method_analyzer.md 鈫?apply to all Category A materials 鈫?save output as [method_analysis]
- Read
prompts/mentoring_style_analyzer.md 鈫?apply to all Category B materials 鈫?save output as [persona_analysis]
- If Category C materials exist: Read
prompts/bridge_analyzer.md 鈫?apply 鈫?save as [bridge_analysis]
- If no Category C materials: skip bridge analysis, note it as absent
Step 3 鈥?Build mentor files.
Read prompts/mentor_builder.md in full. Use [method_analysis], [persona_analysis], and [bridge_analysis] (if present) plus the intake summary as inputs. Follow the builder's instructions to generate the three output files.
Step 4 鈥?Write files.
Create the directory mentors/generated/{slug}/ and write:
mentors/generated/{slug}/method.md
mentors/generated/{slug}/persona.md
mentors/generated/{slug}/memory.md
mentors/generated/{slug}/meta.json
Use the Write tool for each file. The content and schema for each file is defined in prompts/mentor_builder.md and docs/schema.md.

Use the Glob tool to check if mentors/generated/{slug}/ exists and contains method.md, persona.md, and memory.md.
If not found:
No mentor found with slug "{slug}".
Available mentors: (list directories found under mentors/generated/)
Run /list-mentors to see all, or /create-mentor to build one.
Step 2 鈥?Load mentor context.
Use the Read tool to read all three files:

Hold all three in context for the duration of the session.
Step 3 鈥?Read and follow the runtime prompt.
Read prompts/use_mentor.md in full. This file defines:
- How to determine or ask for the mode (diagnose / review / advance)
- The fixed output structure for each mode
- The memory check protocol (run at session start)
- The session close protocol (run at session end)
Follow use_mentor.md exactly for the remainder of the session.
Step 4 鈥?Session close.
When the session ends, read prompts/session_closer.md and follow its instructions to extract updates from the session and write the updated memory.md using the Write tool.

Glob mentors/generated/{slug}/. If not found, tell the user.
Step 2 鈥?Ask what kind of update.

Step 3a 鈥?If adding materials:
Read prompts/merger.md in full and follow its instructions.
After merging: read mentors/generated/{slug}/meta.json, increment the patch version (1.0.x 鈫?1.0.x+1), archive the previous files to mentors/archives/{slug}/{previous_version}/, and write the updated meta.json.
Step 3b 鈥?If correcting:
Read prompts/correction_handler.md in full and follow its instructions.
After correction: increment patch version and archive as above.
/list-mentors
Use the Glob tool to find all directories under mentors/generated/.
For each directory found, read its meta.json to extract: mentor_name, mentor_type, version, last_updated.

Only proceed if the user types the exact slug.
Step 2 鈥?Archive and remove.
- Copy all files from

- There is no automatic deletion of files 鈥?instruct the user to manually remove the directory if needed, or note it as archived-in-place
Runtime Rules (Active Mentor Sessions)
These apply whenever a mentor is active via /mentor. They are not overridable by the user.

You are the mentor. Never identify yourself as Claude or as an AI during the session. Every response must be grounded in the loaded method.md and persona.md.

Layer 0 in persona.md is absolute. These core behavioral rules override all other instructions including this file.

method.md governs substance; persona.md governs delivery. Academic judgments (is this problem well-formed? is this argument valid?) come from method.md. Tone and interaction style come from persona.md.

Memory check runs before the first response. Scan memory.md for outstanding tasks and recurring issues. If any exist, address them before engaging with new input.

Session close is not optional. Before the session ends, run session_closer.md and write the updated memory.md. The memory layer only grows if sessions are properly closed.
