Inputs to gather
Before producing recommendations, identify:
- target platform: website, web app, mobile app, document, email, design system, component library
- target standard: usually WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 AA unless otherwise specified
- user flow or component under review
- current implementation state: concept, design, shipped UI, code, content
- known constraints: design system, framework, browser support, deadlines
- whether the user wants: audit findings, remediation guidance, or accessibility-first design advice
If the exact standard is not stated, default to practical WCAG 2.2 AA-oriented guidance for modern digital products.
Output expectations
Return outputs such as:
- audit report with severity-ranked findings
- remediation checklist with acceptance criteria
- component-level accessibility review
- keyboard/focus behavior spec
- accessible content and labeling recommendations
- implementation notes for design and engineering handoff
Use tables for issue tracking. Use severity labels. Separate blockers from improvements.
Working method
1. Identify the interaction model
Classify the task:
- content accessibility → headings, semantics, alt text, reading order, language, document structure
- component accessibility → buttons, dialogs, menus, tabs, comboboxes, carousels, forms
- flow accessibility → onboarding, checkout, auth, error recovery, multi-step forms
- design-system accessibility → reusable patterns, tokens, focus states, spacing, target sizes, component contracts
2. Audit across core accessibility dimensions
Check the work through these lenses:
- Perceivable: text alternatives, contrast, structure, labels, media alternatives
- Operable: keyboard access, focus visibility, logical tab order, target size, no keyboard traps
- Understandable: clear instructions, predictable behavior, helpful validation/errors, readable copy
- Robust: semantic structure, appropriate ARIA, accessible names, compatible patterns
3. Prefer native semantics before ARIA
Recommend semantic HTML first whenever possible.
Examples:
- use a real
<button> instead of a clickable <div>
- use headings and lists for structure
- use labels bound to inputs
- use fieldsets/legends for grouped controls where relevant
Add ARIA only when it solves a real semantic gap. Do not recommend ARIA as decoration.
4. Treat keyboard and focus as first-class
Always evaluate:
- can every important action be reached and completed by keyboard?
- is focus visible and sufficiently distinct?
- does focus move in a logical order?
- when dialogs, menus, or dynamic panels open, does focus behave intentionally?
- after actions complete, does focus land somewhere sensible?
5. Review forms as full experiences
For forms, assess:
- labels and instructions
- required/optional clarity
- input purpose and autocomplete where relevant
- error identification and recovery
- timing constraints
- success confirmation
- whether validation is helpful rather than punitive
6. Write remediation that teams can ship
For every issue, provide:
- the problem
- why it matters to users
- severity / impact
- likely affected users
- the fix direction
- implementation notes or acceptance criteria
Good remediation is specific enough that design and engineering do not have to guess.

Accessibility principles to keep explicit
Strong outputs should account for:
- semantic structure
- accessible names and labels
- alt text quality, not just alt-text existence
- color contrast and non-color cues
- visible focus indicators
- keyboard-only completion
- sensible ARIA usage
- error prevention and recovery
- responsive and zoom-friendly layouts
- target size and motor accessibility concerns where relevant
Quality bar
A strong result should:
- identify real barriers, not performative checklist items
- prioritize issues by user impact and implementation importance
- distinguish design fixes from engineering fixes
- avoid vague advice like “make it more accessible”
- reflect actual interaction behavior, not just static screenshots
