Failure modes: The 400 km/s threshold is a rough guide, not a physical boundary. Some intervals are genuinely mixed. The Alfvénicity criterion requires magnetic field data with sufficient time resolution to compute σ_c reliably.

The procedure:
Why it works: PSP's unique contribution is accessing the inner heliosphere for the first time. Before PSP, all large-scale properties of the solar wind were measured at 1 AU and could only be inferred to originate at the Sun. PSP directly tests whether these properties are present near the Sun or absent and generated in transit.

Failure modes: "Forming dynamically" does not explain which mechanism forms it. Parametric decay instability, expansion effects, and turbulent cascade all contribute — disambiguating them requires additional analysis.
Transfer hints: Any system where a boundary condition was assumed can be re-tested by acquiring data closer to the source. This is the PSP paradigm: go closer, and check.
When to apply: When seeking to explain a spacecraft observation with a minimal, analytically tractable model that captures the essential physics without approximation.
The procedure:
Why it works: An exact solution is stronger than a numerical construct or a perturbative approximation because it proves the solution exists without approximation. For the Alfvénon, the exact solution was known to be impossible by some accounts — finding it (even in a specialized form) is a non-trivial theoretical result. Numerical validation then confirms it is stable under realistic conditions.

Failure modes: Exact solutions are typically available only for simplified geometries. The Alfvénon assumes specific symmetry conditions that real switchbacks may not always satisfy. Numerical validation mitigates this but cannot fully guarantee the solution applies to nature.

Failure modes: Transition scales can be dataset-dependent (noise, limited resolution, interval selection). A transition reported in one dataset may shift or disappear in another. Confirm with independent datasets when possible.
Transfer hints: Regime transition identification is a general pattern: identify the relevant control parameter, normalize by it, and locate where qualitative behavior changes. Widely applicable in turbulence, phase transitions, and plasma physics.
When to apply: When reporting a genuinely novel observational result that resolves a long-standing question in the field.
The procedure:
Why it works: "First in-situ detection" framing is rhetorically powerful because it identifies the exact novelty of the contribution. It tells the reader: "This has been looked for before, by other missions, and not found. PSP (or this analysis) is what made it possible." The 6σ framing gives it statistical weight. The multiple-events framing gives it robustness.

Failure modes: First-detections can be overstated. The detection may be real but the interpretation may be wrong, or the detection may be limited to specific conditions.
