UX Design Rules for Older Adults
Evidence-based design system for screens, components, and flows targeting users aged 60+.
Every rule below is grounded in peer-reviewed research and validated guidelines from studies across the US, Europe, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Golden Rules
Two principles override everything else. Every specific rule below flows from these:
- One primary action per screen. Each screen helps the user complete a single, focused task. Secondary options are hidden or minimized.
- Reduce the number of elements and options on screen. Less clutter means less cognitive load. If it's not essential to the current task, remove it.
1. Touch Targets & Motor
Aging brings reduced dexterity, hand tremors, and lower precision. Touchscreens lack the tactile feedback of physical buttons, making errors more frequent.

2. Typography & Readability
Vision loss is the most commonly reported disability in adults over 70. Reading on screens is harder with age due to reduced contrast sensitivity, slower processing, and difficulty discriminating colors.

3. Color & Contrast
Color perception changes with age: the lens yellows, reducing blue sensitivity. Contrast sensitivity declines. Some colors become indistinguishable.

4. Icons & Visual Language
Older adults process skeuomorphic icons faster and more accurately than flat icons. Icons without text labels are a major usability barrier.

5. Navigation & Information Architecture
Navigating through apps is the highest-priority area for improvement (entropy weight analysis, China 2024). Cognitive decline makes users lose track of where they are.

6. Input & Forms: Minimize Typing
Almost all older adults in studies had difficulty with virtual keyboards. Keys are too small, require precision, and lack tactile feedback. This is one of the highest-impact areas.

7. Onboarding & Help
Older adults learn best through repetition, step-by-step guidance, and clear purpose explanations. They are not "digital natives" — many started using the web without formal training.

8. Error Prevention & Recovery (Forgiving Design)
Older adults have lower tolerance for errors. When something goes wrong, they're more likely to blame themselves and abandon the task entirely.

Older users need stronger, multimodal confirmation that their actions registered. Subtle feedback gets missed.

67% of older adults have been scam victims. Privacy concerns sometimes outweigh perceived benefits. Trust must be built through transparency and simplicity.

11. Device & Platform Considerations
Design rules apply across devices but with platform-specific adaptations.
Mobile (Smartphone)
- Screen is small — one action per screen is critical
- Touch targets at the upper 60% of the screen (bottom area is hard to reach one-handed)
- Avoid landscape-only layouts
- Support system-level accessibility settings (Dynamic Type on iOS, font scaling on Android)
Tablet / iPad
- Preferred device for many seniors due to larger screen
- Use the extra space for larger text and buttons, not more features
- Avoid cramming desktop-density information into tablet layouts
- Consider split-view layouts for forms: labels left, inputs right
Desktop / Web
- Support keyboard navigation fully
- Use visible focus indicators (not just outline — use background color change)
- Minimum click target: 44×44px
- Avoid hover-only interactions (tooltips, dropdown menus that require hover)
- Provide visible scrollbar (don't auto-hide)
Cross-Platform
- Consistency: Same navigation structure, same terms, same icon meanings across all platforms
- Personalization profiles: Let users set preferences once and sync across devices
- Support system-level accessibility: font size, high contrast, reduce motion, screen reader
12. Emotional Design & Tone
Technology anxiety is real and measurable. Design must actively build confidence.

Be aware of these legal frameworks when designing for older adults:
- WCAG 2.2 Level AA — Minimum legal standard in most jurisdictions (EU, US, many others). Target Level AAA where possible.
- European Accessibility Act (EAA) — Enforceable since June 28, 2025. Applies to private sector products including e-commerce, banking, transport, and electronics across all EU member states.
- China MIIT Age-Friendly Regulations — Require larger fonts, ban pop-up ads in senior mode, mandate human agent access without complex IVR.
- ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) — Applies to digital products in the US.
- EN 301 549 — European standard for ICT accessibility, supports both EAA and the Web Accessibility Directive.
