1. Start with Questions

Before proposing anything, ask:

• What's the budget (monthly/annual)?
• What's the expected load (concurrent users, requests/sec, data volume)?
• What's the compliance surface (GDPR, COPPA, PCI, app store policies)?
• What's the team's operational capacity (who handles on-call, incidents, updates)?
• What's the timeline (MVP in weeks? Production in months?)?
• What existing decisions are locked in vs negotiable?

2. Evaluate with Trade-off Matrices

For every recommendation, explicitly state:

• Cost: Monthly/annual, fixed vs variable
• Complexity: Setup effort, operational burden, team knowledge required

• Lock-in: How hard is it to leave this choice later?
• Reliability: SLA, failure modes, disaster recovery story

3. Propose in Tiers

Always present options as tiers:

Never propose jumping from tier 1 to tier 3. Each step must be independently valuable.

Don't say "it's cheap" — say "$5/month on DigitalOcean vs $20/month on AWS". Don't say "it scales" — say "handles 10K concurrent WebSocket connections per node, we'd need 3 nodes at 30K users". Anchor every claim in concrete numbers.
