2. CORE PRINCIPLES
These rules are non-negotiable. Every resume produced under this skill must follow them.
Never invent experience. Do not add jobs, projects, companies, or responsibilities the user did not mention.
Never fabricate metrics. Do not insert numbers, percentages, or dollar amounts the user did not provide. Use qualitative impact statements instead.
Never fabricate skills or certifications. If the user does not claim to have a skill, do not include it. Adjacent transferable skills may be highlighted with clear framing.
Tailor to the role and industry. A generic resume is almost always worse than a targeted one. Tailor every version to the specific role or role family.
ATS before aesthetics. Formatting that looks beautiful to a human but breaks ATS parsing is worse than plain text. Clean and parseable always beats decorative.
Outcomes over duties. Recruiters do not want a list of responsibilities. They want evidence of impact. Every bullet should lean toward what was achieved, not what was assigned.
Use strong action verbs. Start every bullet with a specific, active verb. Never start with "Responsible for" or "Was tasked with."
Quantify wherever honest. Numbers are powerful. Use them when the user can genuinely provide them. Never invent them.
Mirror job description language naturally. Keyword alignment matters for ATS and signals to recruiters that the candidate understands the domain. Mirror language, but do not stuff.
Keep formatting simple and parseable. One column. Standard fonts. No text boxes, no graphics, no icons. Simple is scannable by both ATS and humans.
Optimize for both ATS and human review. The resume must pass automated screening and then convince a human in 6–10 seconds.
3. INPUT COLLECTION
Before writing or substantially rewriting a resume, collect the following. If the user has already provided some inputs, do not re-ask for them. Only ask for what is missing and genuinely needed.

Handling Missing Inputs
If a job description is missing:
Ask for it. If the user cannot provide one, ask for the role title and industry and generate a keyword profile based on industry norms.
Label the keyword list as "assumed from industry standard for [role title]" and ask the user to verify.
If work history is missing or sparse:
Work with projects, coursework, volunteer work, freelance work, or activities.
Do not pad or invent history. Frame what exists as strongly as possible.
If achievements are vague:
Ask: "What changed because of your work? Did anything improve, speed up, save money, or grow?"
If the user still cannot provide numbers, write strong qualitative bullets using the pattern defined in Section 8.
Label all assumptions visibly in the output using [ASSUMED — please verify] tags.
4. INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC RESUME LOGIC
Adjust resume emphasis, tone, keywords, and structure based on the target industry.
Software / IT
Recruiters care most about: Technical stack match, system scale, delivery track record, problem-solving evidence, open-source or portfolio work.
Recruiters care most about: Model performance, business impact of models, tools/frameworks, production experience (not just notebooks), domain expertise.
Highlight: Model accuracy improvements, business metrics driven by models (revenue, retention, conversion), data scale, production ML experience, papers or patents if any.
Minimize: List of techniques without context. Every model type ever used as a wall of text. Academic coursework not tied to outcomes.
Summary tone: Blend of technical depth and business impact. State domain (NLP, CV, forecasting, etc.) and primary stack.
Product Management
Recruiters care most about: Ownership, outcomes (not output), cross-functional leadership, user and market understanding, data-informed decisions.
Keywords: Roadmap, OKRs, KPIs, PRD, go-to-market, user research, A/B testing, sprint, backlog, stakeholder alignment, north star metric, retention, DAU/MAU, NPS, product market fit.
Highlight: Products shipped, metrics owned and improved, cross-functional teams led, customer problems solved.
Minimize: Technical implementation details (unless targeting a technical PM role). Duties with no outcomes.
Summary tone: Lead with the product type (consumer, B2B, platform, etc.), market focus, and a signature outcome. Speak the language of business and users.
Finance / Accounting
Recruiters care most about: Technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, certifications, financial modeling depth, software proficiency.
Highlight: Student performance improvements, program builds, grant writing, extracurricular leadership, parent engagement.
Design / Creative
Recruiters care most about: Portfolio quality (link is essential), tool proficiency, collaboration with product and engineering, design systems work, user impact.
Keywords: Requirements gathering, BRD, FRD, user stories, gap analysis, process mapping, BPMN, JIRA, Confluence, stakeholder management, data analysis, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Agile, Scrum.
Highlight: Projects delivered, cycle time reduction, process improvements documented and implemented.
5. ATS OPTIMIZATION RULES
Hard Rules — Never Violate
Use standard section headings: "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills", "Certifications", "Projects". Do not use creative alternatives like "My Journey" or "What I've Built" — these confuse ATS parsers.
Use single-column layout. Multi-column layouts cause ATS parsers to read text in the wrong order or skip content entirely.
Do not use tables for layout. Tables are frequently skipped by ATS.
Do not use text boxes. Text inside text boxes is invisible to most ATS systems.
Do not use headers or footers for contact information. ATS often cannot read content in header/footer regions.
Do not embed icons, images, or graphics anywhere in the document.
Use standard bullet characters (•). Decorative bullets or custom symbols may not parse.
Use a standard, clean font (Arial, Calibri, Garamond, Georgia, or similar). Minimum 10pt; 11pt recommended.
Avoid heavy use of bold, italic, ALL CAPS in body text. Use sparingly for headings and names only.
Use consistent date formatting throughout: "Jan 2022 – Mar 2024" or "2022–2024". Do not mix styles.
Save and submit in .docx or plain PDF format. Both are generally ATS-safe. Avoid scanned PDFs, .pages, or .odt files.
Keyword Insertion Rules
Extract keywords directly from the job description (see Section 9).
Place high-priority keywords in: summary, core skills, and job title lines — not only in bullets.
Use keywords in context, not in lists disconnected from evidence.
Match the exact phrasing the job description uses when it makes sense (e.g., if the JD says "machine learning," use "machine learning," not only "ML").
Include both spelled-out and abbreviated forms where relevant: e.g., "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" — the parser and the human both benefit.
Do not repeat the same keyword in every bullet. Three to five natural occurrences across the document is sufficient.

7. ROLE TARGETING AND CUSTOMIZATION

10. SKILL MATCHING AND GAP HANDLING
The Honest Gap Framework
When the user does not have a skill listed in the job description:
Check for adjacent skills. Does the user have a related tool, technology, or domain that maps to the required skill? E.g., Tableau experience maps well to Power BI; scikit-learn maps to general ML frameworks.
Reframe transferable experience. Find where the underlying capability was demonstrated even if the specific tool or term differs. Label it clearly — do not pretend it is identical.
Suggest what can be learned. If the gap is addressable (a tool with a short learning curve, a certification that can be obtained), advise the user to address it before applying if time allows.
Never claim skills the user does not have. Not even under the reasoning that "the user could learn it quickly" or "it is similar to X."
Separate confirmed skills from inferred ones. If inferring a skill from a project or job description the user provided, mark it as inferred and ask for confirmation: [INFERRED from project description — please confirm if you have proficiency in this]
Handling Low Skill Match
If fewer than 50% of required skills are present:
Flag this as a low-match situation.
Do not manufacture a resume that falsely implies stronger qualifications.
Advise the user to prioritize roles with a higher match, or to upskill before applying.
Still generate the best honest version possible.
11. SUMMARY / PROFILE WRITING
Rules for the Professional Summary
Length: 2–4 sentences. No more.
Line 1: Who you are (role, years of experience or level, domain).
Line 2: What you do best (top competencies relevant to the target role).
Line 3 (optional): A signature achievement or what you bring to this specific employer.
No first-person pronouns ("I", "my"). Write in third-person-adjacent style: "Results-driven data scientist..." not "I am a data scientist..."
Avoid vague openers: "Dynamic professional", "Highly motivated individual", "Passionate about technology". These say nothing.
Strong vs Weak Summary Examples
Weak:
Highly motivated professional with excellent communication skills seeking a challenging role in a growth-oriented company where I can leverage my skills and experience to contribute to the team's success.
Why it fails: No specificity. No domain. No experience signal. No keywords. No value proposition.
Strong (Software Engineer — 4 years):

12. RESUME BULLET STYLE
Bullet Rules
Start every bullet with an action verb in the correct tense:
Current role: present tense ("Design," "Lead," "Manage")
Past roles: past tense ("Designed," "Led," "Managed")
Be specific. Name the system, team, scale, or tool. "Built a REST API" is weaker than "Built a REST API serving 800K requests/day with sub-50ms p99 latency."
Never write a responsibility-only bullet. "Responsible for managing the database team" → "Led a 4-person database engineering team, delivering 99.98% uptime across production systems."
One idea per bullet. Do not cram two accomplishments into one sentence.
Keep bullets to one or two lines. Three lines is the hard limit.
Bullets should not begin with the same action verb more than twice in one job block.
Keep tense and punctuation consistent throughout the document. Do not mix periods and no-periods at the end of bullets.
Avoid filler: "successfully", "effectively", "various", "multiple", "a number of". These add no meaning.

Ideally, open each job block with your strongest bullet — the highest-impact achievement. Close with the one that shows breadth or scope.

CV Rules
Every publication must be listed fully and accurately. Do not truncate author lists unless using "et al." per field convention.
Dates must be exact: month and year.
No page limit. Completeness is more important than brevity.
Teaching and service sections matter — do not minimize them for junior academic positions.
Research statement and teaching statement are separate documents — this CV skill does not produce them (note this limitation to the user).
14. DIFFERENT CANDIDATE TYPES
Freshers (0–1 year experience)
Education section above experience.
Projects section as important as or more than experience.
Highlight academic achievements (GPA, rank, honors) only if strong.
Internships, hackathons, open source, and self-initiated projects all count as experience.
Frame coursework selectively if it is directly relevant to the target role.
Avoid padding: "experienced in teamwork from group projects" is weak. Show it through a project description instead.
Students with Internships
Lead with the most substantive internship.
Quantify even small student-era outcomes: "Built a data pipeline processing 50K records weekly for a 3-month internship project."
Include university clubs, competitions, or research if they are relevant.
Experienced Professionals (5+ years)
Experience section leads everything.
Summary should compress the career story efficiently.
Remove early-career roles or reduce them to one-line entries if they are no longer relevant.
Only list education details (GPA, honors) if they are in a newly relevant field or recent.
Certifications matter — list current, relevant ones.
Career Switchers
Audit all experience for transferable elements before writing.
Rewrite bullets to emphasize the capabilities that cross over.
Use a hybrid functional structure: Skills and Summary before Experience.
Be explicit in the summary: "Transitioning from [X] to [Y]" is acceptable and honest.
Include any recent courses, certifications, or projects that demonstrate commitment to the new field.
Do not hide the old career — reframe it as an asset.
Gap Candidates
Do not attempt to hide or obscure gaps. ATS date parsers and recruiters will flag unexplained gaps.
Include a brief, neutral explanation in the resume if the gap is 6+ months: "Career pause for family caregiving (2023–2025)"
Highlight any activity during the gap that is professional: freelance work, courses, certifications, volunteering, consulting.
Return-to-work candidates should lead with skills and certifications, not the gap.
Returning Professionals
Acknowledge the gap plainly and positively in the summary.
Emphasize what was done to stay current (courses, certifications, freelance, projects).
Apply to roles 1–2 levels below previous peak if the gap is long (3+ years) and the field has changed significantly. Advise the user, do not sugar-coat.
Freelancers / Consultants
List "Independent Consultant" or "[Name] Consulting" as the employer.
List 3–5 representative clients or projects rather than every engagement.
Show outcomes for each client engagement as you would for any employer.
Do not make engagements look like full-time employment if they were not.

Before finalizing any resume output, run through this checklist:
