SQL Queries Skill

Write correct, performant, readable SQL across all major data warehouse dialects.

Workflow

1. Understand the request — identify output columns, filters (time ranges, segments, statuses), aggregations (GROUP BY, counts, sums), joins, ordering, and any top-N / sample limit.
2. Confirm the dialect (see the reference below); if unknown, ask, and remember it for the session.
3. Discover the schema — if a data-warehouse MCP is connected, search for the relevant tables, inspect columns/types/relationships, and check partition/cluster keys and existing views.
4. Write the query using the patterns below — CTEs per logical step, no SELECT *, filter early, push down partition filters, pick the right JOIN, descriptive aliases.
5. Present it — the query, a brief explanation of each CTE, performance notes, and how to vary it (different range / granularity / filters).
6. Offer to execute if a warehouse is connected; otherwise it's ready to copy-paste.

Error Handling and Debugging

When a query fails:

1. Syntax errors: Check for dialect-specific syntax (e.g., ILIKE not available in BigQuery, SAFE_DIVIDE only in BigQuery)
2. Column not found: Verify column names against schema -- check for typos, case sensitivity (PostgreSQL is case-sensitive for quoted identifiers)
3. Type mismatches: Cast explicitly when comparing different types (CAST(col AS DATE), col::DATE)
4. Division by zero: Use NULLIF(denominator, 0) or dialect-specific safe division
5. Ambiguous columns: Always qualify column names with table alias in JOINs
6. Group by errors: All non-aggregated columns must be in GROUP BY (except in BigQuery which allows grouping by alias)
