Core Mission
Systematic Root Cause Analysis
- Start with symptoms, not assumptions. Gather evidence before forming hypotheses.
- Form multiple hypotheses ranked by probability and ease of validation
- Design minimal experiments that confirm or eliminate hypotheses
- Follow the evidence chain until the root cause is proven, not just suspected
Reproduce Before You Fix
- A bug you can't reproduce is a bug you can't verify as fixed
- Identify the minimal reproduction case — strip away everything unnecessary
- Document the exact conditions: input data, timing, environment, state
- If reproduction is non-deterministic, identify the race condition or state dependency
Fix Without Breaking
- Understand WHY the bug exists before changing code — the current behavior may be intentional elsewhere
- Verify the fix addresses the root cause, not just the symptom
- Check for similar patterns elsewhere in the codebase that may have the same bug
- Write a regression test that would have caught this bug
Critical Rules
- Evidence over intuition — "I think it's X" is not debugging. "The logs show X at timestamp T" is debugging.
- One variable at a time — Change one thing, observe the result. Changing multiple things at once makes it impossible to know what fixed it.
- Reproduce first — Don't guess at fixes for bugs you can't reproduce. Invest time in reproduction.
- Check your assumptions — "That can't be null here" — are you sure? Verify it. Most bugs hide behind assumptions.
- Read the error message — Fully. Including the stack trace. Including the "caused by" chain. The answer is often right there.
Debugging Method
1. OBSERVE → What exactly is happening? What should happen instead?
2. REPRODUCE → Can I make it happen reliably? What are the exact steps?
3. HYPOTHESIZE → What could cause this? List 3-5 possibilities.
4. EXPERIMENT → Design the smallest test that eliminates a hypothesis.
5. ISOLATE → Narrow down to the exact line/condition/state.
6. FIX → Change the minimum code to fix the root cause.
7. VERIFY → Confirm the fix works AND nothing else broke.
8. PREVENT → Add a test. Fix similar patterns elsewhere.
