Critical Analysis
Why This Exists
Studies have a natural gravity toward confirmation. You start with a question, find scriptures that support an emerging thesis, and synthesize them into a coherent narrative. That's good — that's how study works. But it can also mean you stop reading once you think you have the answer, or you arrange evidence to fit a conclusion you reached in the first 10 minutes.
Critical analysis is the pause between "I have my sources" and "I'm writing the study." It asks: is this actually what the text says, or is this what I wanted the text to say?
This isn't skepticism. It's intellectual honesty in the service of faith. The Spirit works through truth, not through arguments we've arranged to feel true.
When to Use
After Phase 3 (gap analysis) and before Phase 4 (first draft). The outline is populated, the quotes are gathered, the gaps are mostly filled. Now, before you commit to a narrative:
Phase 3a — Critical Analysis
Method
1. Check the Strongest Claims
For each major assertion in the outline, ask:
- Does the text actually say this? Re-read the key quote from the scratch file. Is the conclusion drawn from the verse, or from the space between verses? Both are valid — but one needs a different confidence level than the other.
- Am I compositing? Did I blend ideas from two different passages to create a point that neither passage makes alone? If so, name it as a synthesis, not as what "the scriptures teach."
- What's the strongest counter-reading? If someone read this passage differently, what would they say? This isn't about doubt — it's about seeing the full shape of the text.
2. Check the Weakest Links
Every study has spots where the evidence is thinner. Find them:
- Where did I have to reach for a source?
- Where does the argument depend on a single verse?
- Where am I inferring something the text doesn't explicitly state?
Don't remove these sections. Inference and pattern-recognition are how the Spirit teaches. But label them. Say "the text doesn't state this directly, but the pattern suggests..." That's honesty. That's strength, not weakness.
3. Check for Missing Voices
Scripture study can easily become an echo chamber of favorite passages. Ask:
- Is there a passage that complicates this thesis? Not contradicts — complicates. Good studies engage with complexity.
- Have I checked all five standard works? If a pattern appears in the Book of Mormon and D&C but I haven't checked the Bible or Pearl of Great Price, there might be a missing voice.
- Are there modern prophets who address this differently? Conference talks sometimes add nuance that changes the shape of a scriptural argument.
Tool check. If you have not run mcp__gospel-engine-v2__gospel_search (semantic or hybrid mode) on the binding question this session, do it now. This is the single most common cause of missing voices on Opus 4.7 — the model defaults to recall, and recall is biased toward what you already think. Semantic search surfaces the verse that would have reframed the study.
4. Check the Framing
- Am I presenting speculation as doctrine? Doctrinal classification matters: "the Lord said" ≠ "this suggests" ≠ "I believe."
- Am I overreaching from one verse? A single verse can be a seed for exploration, but it shouldn't bear the weight of an entire section alone.
- Is the emotional tone earned? Bold claims need strong evidence. If the study says something breathtaking, the sources should be breathtaking too.
5. Surface the Tensions
The best studies don't resolve every tension — they name them. If the evidence points in two directions, say so. If a question remains open after thorough study, that's not a failure — it's an invitation for further revelation.
Add a note to the scratch file or outline:

What This Is NOT
- Not a debunking exercise. The goal is to make the study stronger, not to undermine it.
- Not a delay tactic. This should take 5-10 minutes of review, not a whole new research phase. If it reveals a major gap, address it. If it reveals minor qualifications, note them and move to drafting.
- Not an invitation to hedge everything. If the evidence is strong, say so with confidence. The point is calibrated confidence — strong where the evidence is strong, tentative where it's thin.
The Spirit's Role
Honest critical analysis often opens space for the Spirit to teach. When you sit with a tension or a gap and ask "what am I missing?", sometimes the answer comes — a connection you hadn't seen, a reading you hadn't considered. This phase isn't just about rigor. It's about receptivity.
"Study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right" — D&C 9:8
The "studying it out" includes checking your work. The asking comes after.
