Positioning
Find a clear position: who this is for, what problem it owns, and why it is different.
Gather Context
Read existing product and market material first. If essential context is missing, ask for:
- Product capability and strongest current use case.
- Best customer or desired first customer.
- Main alternatives and the status quo.
- Proof already available.
- Business constraint: price point, sales motion, geography, compliance, founder appetite.
Diagnose The Current Position
Name the current position in one sentence. Then test it:
- Is the customer specific enough to find?
- Is the pain urgent enough to act on?
- Is the alternative named?
- Is the product’s advantage provable?
- Would competitors be happy to say the same thing?
If the current angle is too broad, split it into smaller positioning options.
Create Positioning Options
Create 3-5 positioning options. Each option must include:
- Target: a reachable customer group.
- Moment: when the need becomes active.
- Enemy: the current way they solve it.
- Advantage: what this product does better or differently.
- Proof: what can make the claim credible.
- Tradeoff: who this position excludes.
Prefer options based on behavior, urgency, data access, workflow ownership, distribution access, or regulatory pressure.
Pick The Best Position
Score each option from 1-5 on:
- Reachability.
- Pain intensity.
- Competitive contrast.
- Proof strength.
- Revenue potential.
- Speed to test.
Recommend one lead position and one backup position. Do not pick a position only because it sounds large.
