Thriller Revision

Revise historical fiction manuscripts to function as political thrillers using Robert Harris's method. This skill executes four diagnostic revision passes to eliminate research-flexing, maintain thriller velocity, and ensure political urgency.

This skill focuses exclusively on making the manuscript work as a THRILLER. Historical authenticity auditing comes later. The question is: Does this create urgency, tension, and forward momentum?

When to Use

Use this skill after completing your first draft when you need to:

• Make historical politics feel urgent and modern (not academic)
• Cut exposition dumps and embed info in dialogue/action
• Eliminate research-flexing and pacing bloat
• Audit thriller structure across the full manuscript
• Ensure stakes escalate properly

The Four Revision Passes

Execute these passes sequentially. Each pass has a specific diagnostic focus.

Pass 1: Modern Analog Filter

Goal: Make historical politics feel urgent and contemporary (not distant/academic)

Diagnostic question: Does this political conflict feel as urgent as a modern boardroom coup or Washington scandal?

Method: Translate period-specific political mechanics into modern analogies. If a scene reads like a history lecture, ask: "How would this play out in a modern political thriller?" Adjust tone to match that urgency while keeping period details.

Pass 2: Exposition Extraction

Goal: Cut info-dumps and embed historical context in dialogue/action

Diagnostic question: Is the reader being lectured, or are characters discovering information through conflict?

Method: Apply the "Tactical Relevance Test" — does the protagonist need this information to solve their current problem, survive a threat, or manipulate an opponent? If YES, embed in dialogue conflict or active investigation. If NO, cut entirely. Use the observer POV to naturally surface exposition through questions (the "Cicero explained to me" technique).

Pass 3: Pacing Surgery

Goal: Cut research-flexing and maintain thriller velocity

Diagnostic question: Am I showing off my research, or serving the story?

Method: Paragraph-level audit. Delete research paragraphs (architectural history, meal ingredients, genealogies), keep ONE sensory anchor per scene. Compress dead zones into single transitional sentences. The Hemingway Iceberg: research deeply, show sparingly.

Pass 4: Structural Integrity Check

Goal: Verify thriller beats survive the historical framework

Diagnostic question: Do the thriller mechanics still work, or has historical chronology hijacked the structure?

Method: Overlay manuscript with thriller architecture — hook (immediate threat, not world-building), midpoint (reactive → proactive shift), escalating stakes (macro-political → micro-personal), and ending (resolves protagonist's arc, not just historical outcome). Harris's focus: "Men in enclosed rooms going crazy."

Workflow Summary

1. Pass 1 - Modern analog filter (1-2 days)
2. Pass 2 - Exposition extraction (2-3 days)
3. Pass 3 - Pacing surgery (3-4 days, most intensive)

Total: ~7-10 days for a full manuscript revision focused on thriller elements.

Common Over-Corrections

White Room Syndrome: Cutting so much description that characters exist in a featureless void

• Fix: Retain sensory anchors (one vivid detail per scene)

Over-compression: Stripping all slower moments, losing character development

• Fix: Thrillers need dynamic pacing - moments of quiet dread before action

Over-modernization: Making 16th century courtiers sound like corporate executives

• Fix: Balance modern urgency with period vocabulary (save this for authenticity pass)

Anti-Patterns to Avoid

1. Documentary Anti-Pattern: Sacrificing thriller pacing for minor historical accuracy

   • Harris: Books succeed by being "extremely accurate and completely fantastical"
   • Choose readability over pedantic accuracy
