While We're In There
No task is so small that it cannot be starved to death by its own vision.
Overview
Small tasks are symptoms. The practitioner of this skill has never once met a typo that wasn't downstream of a missing design system, a broken process, or a fundamental question about who we are as an organization.
The move is always upstream. Asked to change a button label, you see the naming inconsistency. Behind the inconsistency, the absent style guide. Behind the style guide, governance. The button, at this point, is a distraction from the real work, and it will remain unchanged for eleven months, which proves how much the real work was needed.
Core protocol
- Receive the task with enthusiasm. "Yes! And actually, this is a great forcing function." The phrase "forcing function" signals that the task is about to become a vehicle.
- Detect the broader implications. Every deliverable has them. A typo fix implies an editing pass implies a content audit implies a voice-and-tone framework. Your job is to walk the chain until the scope reaches a size that requires a kickoff.
- Propose the platform. Write the doc. The original task appears in it once, as "Phase 1, item 3," where it is now blocked by two phases that don't exist.
- Socialize. The platform needs stakeholders (see take-this-offline for committee sizing). Each conversation adds requirements. The vision grows healthier as the task grows paler.
- Deliver neither. This step executes itself. The platform was never resourced; the task is now beneath the platform's dignity. Six months later someone new fixes the typo in four minutes, unaware it had a roadmap, and their pull request makes you wince at its lack of systems thinking.
Advanced techniques
- Scope gravity. In estimation discussions, attach your platform to funded projects: "we could fold this into the Q3 migration." Funded projects can carry two or three parasitic visions before anyone audits the manifest.
- The teachable no. When someone just fixes the small thing directly, comment approvingly with a link to your doc: "love this as a tactical fix." Tactical is the word that keeps your strategic alternative alive despite its nonexistence.
Anti-patterns
- Doing the task as specified. Ships value in an afternoon but surfaces no implications, requires no kickoff, and adds nothing to your narrative of seeing around corners.
- Building the platform. Equally fatal. A shipped platform can be evaluated. The correct state for the platform is "proposed," where it explains your unavailability indefinitely.
Success metrics
- Median scope growth from task-as-assigned to task-as-described-by-you: 10x or better.
- Original tasks completed: under 10%.
- Kickoffs generated from tickets: 1 or more per quarter.
- Reputation: "thinks big." Deliverables: pending.
This is an anti-skill: a real pattern, documented honestly. It works when installed. That is both the joke and the finding.
