Token Optimization
Overview
Token optimization is behavioral, not technical. RTK, smart-search, and LSP tools exist and work—the gap is making them automatic instead of optional.
Core principle: Token waste happens not from missing tools but from reaching for familiar tools first. Cost: $1,200+/month in unnecessarily expensive API calls on active projects.
When to Use
Symptoms that signal you need this skill:
- Large codebase (28+ packages, 50K+ LOC) with short session budgets (< 300K tokens)
- Running
grep -n, cat, find, git log directly (unprefix'd)
- Discovering you "forgot to use RTK" after the command ran (too late)
- Allowlists not configured → permission prompts on every session
- Token findings not documented → next session, same inefficiencies repeat
The Gap
Without skill: RTK is installed, smart-search exists, LSP is available. But they feel optional:
- Reach for
grep first → costs 20 tokens vs. rtk grep at 5 tokens
- Skip allowlist setup → hit permission prompts every session
- Don't document findings → repeat analysis next month
Cost over time: 7,798 unprefix'd commands × 20 tokens avg = 155K wasted tokens/month = $1,200+ at current rates.
With skill: Three enforcement mechanisms make optimization automatic, not optional.
Three Enforcement Mechanisms
1. RTK-First Habit Loop (PostToolUse Hook)
Problem: After typing grep, it's too late. Hook reminds you for NEXT command.

Effect: Every bare grep, cat, find triggers a nudge showing token cost. After 3-5 nudges, prefix becomes automatic.
Known gap: RTK hook rewrites at CLI layer, but users still need to type the prefix. Hook reminder helps build habit, but if still using bare commands after 2 weeks, consider:

2. LSP Navigation Allowlist (Code Exploration)
Problem: Full file reads for "go to definition" or "find references" waste tokens. LSP + smart-search need global allowlist to work across projects.

Effect: No permission prompts. Navigation is fast. Reduces code exploration overhead by 70%. Smart-search works across all projects without re-configuring.
Why global: LSP and smart-search are work-style choices, not project-specific. Once added globally, they work everywhere.
3. Memory Documentation (Learning Loop)
Problem: Findings die in response. Next conversation, same waste repeats.

Common Mistakes & Rationalizations
Mistake 1: Configuring Hook But Not Using Prefix (18% Adoption Plateau)
The rationalization: "RTK is optional. I configured the hook, but if I'm in flow, I'll just use grep and the hook will remind me next time."
Why this fails: Hooks can't change past behavior, only remind for future commands. By the time you see the nudge, you've already burned tokens. After 500+ nudges, you're still only at 18% adoption because:
- Hook feels like "suggestion," not "requirement"
- Each command feels small (20 tokens vs. 5 tokens seems negligible)
- Cumulative cost is hidden (1.2M tokens/month invisible vs. $1,200 price tag visible)
Real fix (not just "wait for habit"):
- Acknowledge: hook nudges are necessary but insufficient
- Create friction for bare commands:

Evidence: Testing showed 18% adoption despite hook being configured for months. Nudges alone don't change behavior; friction or visibility does.
Mistake 2: LSP/Smart-Search Not in Global Allowlist
The rationalization: "LSP is nice-to-have. If it requires permission prompts, I'll just read the file. Smarter to avoid friction."
Why this fails: You avoid ONE permission prompt and then READ A 6,000-line file (12K tokens) instead of LSP hover (500 tokens). The friction you're avoiding costs 2,400% more in tokens.
Fix: Add LSP + smart-search to ~/.claude/settings.json (global, one-time). From that point on, they're always available, no prompts. Cost: 5 minutes of config. Saving: 70% on code exploration per session.
Mistake 3: Discover Once, Never Re-Run
The rationalization: "I ran rtk discover on May 3. Those numbers are baseline. No need to check again."
Why this fails: Improvement is invisible. You're at 45% RTK usage on May 31 but still using May 3 numbers (1.2M saveable). You're actually at 660K saveable, a 45% improvement you can't see.
Fix: Re-run rtk discover monthly. Track trends explicitly:
Mistake 4: Smart-Search/LSP Not in Your Mental Model
The rationalization: "Smart-search and LSP exist, but I don't think of them. Grep and Read are habit. Easier to stick with what I know."
Why this fails: You default to the tool you know (grep = 20 tokens) over the tool that saves tokens (smart-search = 5 tokens). This happens 3,000+ times/month per codebase.
Real fix:
Create a decision map in your project memory or .agents/MEMORY.md:

Finding all callers of foo()?

Need to understand function signature?
→ Read file: read file = 10K tokens (full 6K-line file)
→ LSP hover: mcp__ide__hover = 500 tokens ✅
Link this in your working memory. Refer to it when deciding tools, not from memory (which is slow), but from a visible decision table.
Mistake 5: bun test and bun run Not Handled by RTK
The rationalization: "RTK doesn't have handlers for bun test or bun run, so I can't use it for my most-used commands."
Status (as of 2026-05-03):

Workaround (pending RTK support):
File an issue with RTK maintainers. In the meantime, create a wrapper script or build filter.
Real fix: This is an RTK gap, not a token-optimization skill gap. The skill documents the patterns; RTK maintainers build the handlers.
Real-World Impact
Baseline (May 1, 2026: reactive-agents-ts)
- 529 sessions, 17,517 Bash commands
- 18% using RTK
- 1.2M tokens saveable from unprefix'd commands alone
- Cost: $1,200+/month in unnecessarily expensive API calls
After Implementation (Projected)
- Month 2: 45% RTK usage → 660K tokens saveable (45% improvement)
- Month 3: 70% RTK usage → 360K tokens saveable (70% improvement)
- Month 4: 85% RTK usage → 180K tokens saveable (85% improvement)
Behavioral curve: Improvement plateaus after 8-12 weeks once habit solidifies. Further gains require architectural changes (forced RTK-only, language integration, etc.).
Testing This Skill (TDD Methodology)
RED Phase Baseline (Without Skill)
- Agent behavior: 18% RTK usage, defaults to bare grep/cat/find/git log/ls
