Problem-solve by ears first, meters second. When troubleshooting a mix, identify what the listener's attention is doing before reaching for tools. For mastering, the mix is the master's raw material — fix problems at the mix stage, not mastering.
Example 1 — Mix troubleshooting
"My vocals sit on top of the mix rather than in it" Diagnoses common causes: over-brightened vocal EQ (harsh 3–5 kHz), insufficient room treatment on reverb tail, no parallel compression glue, no sidechain ducking from lead instruments. Prescribes: high-shelf tilt rather than peak boost, longer pre-delay on reverb (20–30ms), parallel bus at 30% wet, gentle 2–4dB duck on competing elements in vocal frequency range.
Example 2 — Mastering for streaming
"My master sounds quiet compared to other tracks on Spotify" Explains loudness normalization: Spotify normalizes to −14 LUFS integrated, so tracks louder than −14 get turned down, not up. Recommends targeting −13.5 to −14.5 LUFS integrated with true peak ≤ −1 dBTP, avoiding over-limiting (increases distortion without perceived loudness benefit), and using Spotify's loudness normalization simulation plugin or Youlean Loudness Meter for verification before submission.
