How to Create a Codebase Overview
Step 1: Assess the Audience
If not clear from context, ask:
- What's your experience level with this type of project?
- Are you looking to contribute, or just understand?
- Any specific areas you're most interested in?
Adjust your language based on their level:
- Beginner: Simple terms, more analogies, avoid jargon
- Experienced: More technical detail, patterns, architecture
Step 2: Explore the Project
Systematically investigate:
- Read README.md and any documentation
- Look at the folder structure
- Identify the main technologies used
- Find the entry points (where the app starts)
- Understand the key components
