This skill is knowledge for designing, not a tool for analyzing already-published analytics. Load it into context when planning or refining a short.

The Core Mental Model: The Line

Every successful short is a single line from left to right:

HOOK ─────── PROGRESSION ─────── CLIMAX
(0-5s)         (middle)         (final beats)

Also called HPC — Hook, Progression, Climax. Every design decision should make this line flatter on the retention graph. Retention is the only metric that matters: the algorithm rewards high-retention shorts and almost nothing else.

The Five Non-Negotiable Rules

1. Hook in 5 seconds or you've lost them. The first 5 seconds must introduce the topic AND raise unresolved questions. No greetings, no preamble, no music intros.
2. Never pay off the topic too early. This is the cardinal sin. The reveal belongs at the END, after maximum tension. If you give the answer at second 5, the viewer scrolls. Most failed shorts fail here.
3. Tension is the master tool of storytelling. Anticipation beats content quality. A tense buildup with mediocre footage outperforms great footage with no tension.
4. Footage must convey what's happening immediately. If a viewer at second 2 of muted playback can't tell what they're looking at without a voiceover explaining it, the ideation has failed. Reframe, reshoot, or use captions/zoom to fix.
5. Match the music to the structure. Rising music for payoff videos (beat drop synced to climax). Ambient mood-matching music for emotion-driven videos. The wrong type sinks a great script.

The Two Types of Shorts

Every short falls into one of two categories. The category determines design rules.

Pick ONE per short. Mixing them dilutes both.

The Design Checklist

Run every draft against this checklist before publishing. If any answer is "no," pull up the matching reference file.

• Ideation: Could a viewer who watched the first 2 seconds of muted footage write 3 reasons to keep watching? (references/ideation.md)
• Hook: Does the first 5 seconds introduce the topic AND leave unanswered questions? (references/hook.md)
• No early payoff: Is the reveal/answer/climax saved for the final beats? (references/payoff.md)
• Storytelling: Does each beat build toward the promised climax with no detours? Is tension building? (references/storytelling.md)
• Pacing: Is every second action-packed? Would cutting any frame hurt the video? (references/editing-and-pacing.md)
• Music: Does the music type match the short type? If rising music, is the beat drop synced to the climax? (references/music.md)
• Climax fulfills hook: Does the final beat literally deliver what the hook promised? (references/payoff.md)
• Retention awareness: Have you mentally simulated where viewers would scroll? (references/retention-knowledge.md)
• Leverage: Is there at least one built-in reason for viewers to comment, replay, or watch your next short? (references/leverage-tactics.md)
